Ok, to start off, when posting in the forums you can ping people. You do this by putting this symbol @ in front of somebody's username
E.G mine would be @mastergemma
That person, me, will now receive a notification saying that you have pinged them on a topic.

Other ways of communicating is on a person's wall, you cannot ping on a wall. The Wall is located on the person's profile and if someone writes on your wall you reply to them on THEIR wall, not yours. This is a common mistake seen.
