I'm new. What is pinging? How do you do it?

To ping someone is to add the '@' symbol in front of their username when writing a forum, wall or blog post. You can write the username yourself or you can click the little bell icon that appears under the post count. Wall pings do not send notifications though.

This also sends the user you pinged a notification.
