Ryan shook his head. "There's usually a reason why adults tell us no to do these things. You never know what might be down there, even though there may not be any ghosts it can be equally as dangerous."

Max jogged up to them, his arms full of paper enveloped. "Hey guys, when are we gonna leave? Those other kids will reach the cabins before us!" he whined.

"As soon as we find at least one other person to join our group." assured Ryan. "It'll probably be safer in a group of four, since anything out in the woods will be a bit more reluctant to be out to get us."
He cast a wary glance at the woods, then shook his head.
"Okay, if the instructors thought that the woods were dangerous, they wouldn't be letting us do this. But even so, it always pays to be prepared..."

Enna blinks. "One other person...." she mutters to herself. Standing up, she walks slowly over to the others. "H-hi....Ryan, M-Max and Ashlynn, right?" she stutters, silently panicking in her mind.

"I-I'll join y-your group...is t-that okay?" OH NO!!! WHAT IF THEY SAY NO??!?!!?! Her eyes widen. She can feel sweat on her hands. She should NEVER have even thought about doing this...

"Sure." Ash says. "What's your name?" Ash smiles. "Let's get going, I can explore the mine shafts later."

Sensing that the girl was a shy person, Ryan gave her a welcome smile. "Hey, it's okay. You're right, my name is Ryan. By the way, you didn't seem to be here when the camp directors were informing us about the camp. I can fill you in if you like." he handed her a envelope containing one of the half finished maps.
Then he turned to Ash.
"I'm sure that the camp directors will allow us to explore the mine shafts at one point or another." He said, trying to sound comforting. "If they didn't want us to go anywhere near them, they would have built fences around them to keep us out. If the mine shafts had fences around them, then they wouldn't need to tell us to stay away from them."

Ash laughs. "I don't care what they say, They're cowards and i'm not. I really want to explore them and see what amazing secrets they hold. Maybe they are as haunted as the forest."

Elizabeth looked around. Two people looking for cabins in the middle of nowhere, verse people in groups. She didn’t like her odds. So she decided to see if anyone was left. She found one, four people. They seemed to be chatting. They look friendly enough, she thought to herself.
She stood up and walked over to the group. “Howdy,” She greeted. “Would we,” she gestured to Charles, who was trying to make sense of the map, “be able to join your group to find the cabins? For safety in numbers, and all that jazz.”

Ryan shrugged. "I'm Ryan, and this is Ashlynn. These are Max and..." His voice trailed off, not knowing what he should say. He glanced nervously at his friends, hoping if they could help him.

"Ok!" Ash says giggling. She runs into the forest and ignores the trails. Slowing to a walk she looks around for the mine shafts, wanting to go there as soon as possible.

"We're meant to stick to the trails, and aren't you going to say hello to the others?"

"Maybe" Ash says. She spots the mine shafts far in the distance. "Hey! Look! There it is!" She says running as fast as possible to it, jumping over roots and dodging branches.

Ryan gritted his teeth and shook his head, then opened his envelope and tried to fill in a couple of paths. A branch had scraped him on the leg, and it stung.
"That's Ashlynn." He pointed. "Max, can you get her for me?"

Max jogged up to Ash. "S'up, that cave looks awesome!" he said, hopping in exitedly.

"It's a mineshaft." She corrects him. "And I'm going to explore." Ash runs into the mineshaft. "Woah it's dark in here!" She calls out, her voice echoing. Suddenly, she screams as she falls in a hole three and a half feet taller than her head. She lands painfully on her leg and grits her teeth, waiting for the pain to fade. "Help!" She calls out her voice shrill.

Max hastily looked around for help, then spotted a decaying wooden ladder propped up against the side of the rocky cavern. "Just wait a moment, Ashy!" he called. He grasped the ladder firmly with his fists and yanked as hard as he could. The old rope supporting the ladder snapped loudly, and Max staggered backward. He dragged it across and carefully lowered it into the hole. Then he climbed down.

"get up there!" Ash snaps ferociously. "S-sorry I didn't mean to snap." she adds quickly. "Please. You'll get stuck too, it-it's rotting! Please, I need Ryan, I think my ankle is broken." She tries to move it but can't. "i really can't move it!!!"

@lailaluckyseal87

Reluctantly, Max began to climb the ladder. It creaked under his weight, and he realised Ash's point.
"I don't think you're ankle's broken, you probably just sprained it." he called down.
// Curse you, why didn't you listen to Ryan? He was the sensible one// Max thought to himself.
"I'll be right back!" he called to Ash, before getting up and running out of the mineshaft.
There was no one there.
Cursing, he stood at the entrance and called out as loudly as he could, but no one came.
With a jolt of panic, he realised that the landscape had totally changed. Before, the forest had been relatively flat, now it rose in hills and the treeline ended a lot closer than it used to.
Panic rose in him and he ran back to the mineshaft and back to the hole where Ash had fallen down.
"I can't find them, the whole place has changed!" He called. "We're gonna have to get out on our own, I'll try and find a better ladder..."
___________________________________________

// What the heck is taking them so long? // thought Ryan. He had been halfway through telling the newcomers about his thoughts for the camp, and in the process he had learned that their names were Enna, Elizabeth and Charles.
"...I wonder what Ash and Max are up to." he finished.
"Just wait a second, I'll go and get them."

He turned and walked to where he thought the mineshaft had been, or where he THOUGHT it had been, then stopped and turned in confusion, then wandered back feeling very bad.
"Okay, please don't call me crazy. The mineshaft has just vanished, and I have no idea where they are."

Ash suddenly feels like crying. "how are we going to get out.." she says standing up, not touching her ankle to the ground. When she touches the ground with it she collapses again. "Oww.." she moans. "Please, it hurts! I need help!"

Max bit his lip. He hated seeing people cry, especially if it was his fault. "Don't move your foot, I'll go and find anther ladder..." he called to his friend, before dashing aimlessly back and fourth across the narrow cavern of the mineshaft. He found a rope and some large sticks, but that was all. With a sob, he collapsed on the rocky earth, heart pounding. It was no use.

Then his eye caught something at the back of the cave, a long pole stuck at the back of the mine shaft. "Just wait a minute more, I've found something."
Max carefully made his way towards the object, for the area was filled with sharp rocks that jabbed at his legs. The pole was so old that it was encrusted with a layer of dirt, and Max curled his fingers around the cold metal and pulled.

Rocks and dust fell down around him, he coughed and yanked harder. Then it occurred to him that the thing was ANOTHER LADDER. Hope ignited inside him and he pulled with renewed vigour. The dust began to cascade down the wall like a river, pebbles rained down on him like hailstones. Max shook his head and gritted his teeth, and with one final jerk the ladder was wrenched out of it's foundations.

The release of pressure was so great that Max staggered back, nearly tripping over. He threw out his arms to steady himself, then grabbed the iron ladder and dragged it to the hole.
"Ash, I'm back!" he called down, before gently lowering the metal ladder into the hole and climbing down.

“A whole mine shaft can’t just disappear. Maybe you just went in the wrong direction?” Charles replied. He seemed confident.

“You say that while in a forest with many myths,” Elizabeth mumbled. Charles glanced at Elizabeth, but didn’t say anything. “I’ll help look, if you want.”

“So will I,” Charles then mumbled the second part, “Though I still don’t know how you can lose a mine shaft.”

“We should stick in a group, to avoid losing each other and ending up like your friends,” Elizabeth pointed out. She glanced at Enna and smiled.

Max helped Ash out as gently as he could, taking care not to put her in more pain than she was already in.
"Easy there, Ash. It's okay, I'll deal with this."

He led her towards the entrance of the mineshaft, taking care not to hurt her ankle.

"I'm sure there somewhere."

“Come on,” Elizabeth called, walking off, “let’s find your friends.” Charles followed leaving their stuff behind, excluding Elizabeth’s sactual. She searched the forest, finding a single foot print. “Hey I found something!” She called.

Enna mumbled the same words to herself over and over. "This is bad this is bad this is bad this is bad this is bad..."

She hesitantly follows Elizabeth into the forest. BIG MISTAKE. She spies a rare flower and—poof!—she's dropped into dreamland, staring and sketching in some sort of trance. She hears Elizabeth's and Charles' voices fading off, but...she doesn't care. "MUST...SKETCH...FLOWER!"

“We’ve lost one,” Charles spoke, interrupting Elizabeth’s train of thought. “Do you want me to go back, or do you want to?”

“You go,” Elizabeth replied, “If this mineshaft is magic then I believe I’m more suited than you are.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“I have a wider knowledge than you.” With that Elizabeth grabbed a stick and drew an arrow in the dirt before leaving.

“I feel insulted,” Charles pouted, before going back the way he came leaving small marks on the ground. Back tracking, he found Enna kneeling on the ground sketching a… flower? He moved closer and knelt down beside her. “Nice picture.”

~~~~~~
Elizabeth continued to move forward, looking for foot prints, broken branches or anything else that she could use to find the mine-shaft.
Enna blushes furiously. How dare she get distracted by a flower? Again! She stutters out an apology. "I-I'm s-s-s-sorry...I g-get d-d-distracted e-easily..."
She takes one last mournful look at the flower, then closes her notebook and gets up. "W-where's E-E-Elizabeth? Did s-she send you back for m-me?" she asks, shocked. "She sh-shouldn't have!"
Ryan gratefully followed his friends into the woods, making sure that all the area was searched. "Come on Enna, you can sketch that flower later. See?" He snapped a photo of the flower with the camera and gave it to her. "You can draw while we get back to the cabins."
Ryan ran after Elizabeth and Charles, determined to find something before them. "Hey guys, why don't we--OOF!!"
Coughing, he picked himself up, his knee stung from when he grazed the log that lay across the track. "Ugh, stupid tree," he muttered. Sighing, he plonked himself down on it's hard surface.
Clank.
What? He tapped the tree experimentally with his foot, then kicked it as hard as he could.
Tap, tap, tap, Clunk!
"Hey guys, check this out!" Ryan called, tapping the weird log. "I think it's made of metal, this camp is getting weirder by the moment!
After thanking Ryan, Enna gets up and walks to the log. Tapping it, she realizes that it is, indeed metal. "It is metal...this is weird." she mutters to herself, mentally panicking. "do...do ya th-think that it has s-something to do with Max and A-Ashlynn?"
Ryan shrugged. "It seems a little weird for someone to dump a metal tree out here in the middle of nowhere, my guess is that they were hiding something."
Curious, he began to inspect the fake tree for any secret compartments, or for clue to Ash and Max's disappearance.
There was an unusually smooth 'branch' sticking out of the base of the tree. Ryan put his feet against the fake tree and pulled as hard as it could. It didn't budge, so he strained harder.
"Enna, do you think tha-AAAH!!!"
The branch swung open on it's hinges like a cupboard. The release of tension was so great that Ryan staggered and fell from the log and landed on the ground with a thump.
"Oof! Don't worry, I'm okay!"
He got up and dusted himself off.
_________________________________________________
"I'm sure we'll be alright," Max whispered. "If we keep on walking, maybe we'll meet another group or something and then we'll be safe."
Max had been planning to photocopy Ryan's map when they reached the cabins, so he didn't take one for himself. Big mistake. Now they were stuck in the middle of nowhere!
There was a crackling of twigs behind him. Max turned to see a black cat wearing a bright orange sweater slowly padding it's way towards them. It yawned and stretched, clearly a domestic one. Then it cocked it's head and stared at them, as if to humour their clumsiness.
"Huh? What's a cat doing here? Ash, I think we should see where it came from."
The cat padded away into the undergrowth, then turned it's head and stared at them with wide green eyes. It seemed to be a bit impatient, as if it wanted the kids to follow them.
