Someone teach me how to use the Edit Cove List, please!

I truly and utterly hate the cove list editing option since the transfer to the new version of the website and because of that I haven't even tried to sort my lists in months. Now I really want to sort them, but I can't get the editing to work the way I want it it to.
Creatures almost never end up in the order of the number I pick for them. More often than not they end up at the number behind the one I wanted and then I have to move the one in front - and then it jumps two numbers instead of one too, and so on. It's a mess and it's taking forever to create a new list order - a.k.a. driving me mad! x__X

What am I doing wrong? Someone please help me figure this editing system out!
How do you get the critters to end up in the order you actually type into the box???

I REALLY miss the old drag and drop way of sorting. -___-
