What exactly is the purpose of items?

Are items just collectibles, or can you use them in some way? Is there a point to getting them all? Keen is probably just looking for another thing to catalog.

The most common use is collectables but items do have other uses. Travels add a background to your creature, books can give your creatures views, toys can give clicks, and food can give feeds. Books, toys, and food also increase your creature's happiness when used.
