When does a pet become endangered?

I'm trying to wait for sweesh to become endangered so they can spawn in the oasis but there's one up for sale right now but I want a girl and it's a boy. So I'm trying to find out if it's worth it for me to buy and gender change or if I should just wait for them to turn endangered.

Only common Cave creatures can become endangered. And that only happens when they get removed from the Cave. The Sweesh was a monthly creature, thus it will never become endangered since it was retired instead.
