I attempted to bait a Nirosel with an item. I got the " Your bait was used, but it didn't seem to work... drat!" message and almost left the cave, but then I realized that the bait DID work. The image underneath the text was an Nirosel egg. I went on to name it and it is currently in my cove.Furthermore, I'm positive that I selected the Nirosel egg. I went back on my browser, and Nirosel was selected as the egg to bait.https://imgur.com/a/cWfpCk6

@sydney I suspect (and could be wrong) that you where once in a blue moon, won the lottery type lucky. Your bait did fail, however you still managed to randomly get the creature you where chasing.

I had the same experience for another CRW creature!

sorry this is a little off topic but I never knew this was a thing at all, how exactly does one “bait the cave”? o-o

@minnie298asuch a simple explanation, but probably the correct one lol. i hadn't thought of that.

@vanilla It's only been around for a little while. When you visit the cave to adopt a pet ( https://eggcave.com/cave ) you will see an item and 3 visible species above the 5 random mystery eggs. If you have the item in your inventory you can select one of the 3 identified eggs. This item then becomes bait and disappears in exchange for a small chance of getting the species you wanted in exchange for the item. For your next cave approach, a different item will be asked for. In my experience the chances of succeeding are rare, and as I'm not normally super desperate for commons or monthlies, I often don't bother chasing down the item.@sydney It's happened to me as well, and that was the only reasoning I could come up with. It's even more exciting when I contemplate baiting, decide not to, and still get what I thought about.

@sydney @minnie298a thank you for explaining! but wow that sounds really cool. I've actually never seen or encountered items or visible species above the 5 random mystery eggs at the cave before 😮 I wonder why and whether the "bait with item" feature is only available to certain users only.

@vanilla - Certain newer features like cave baiting are only available to users who verify their phone number via SMS, I think mainly to help prevent multiple account abuse. Those who aren't verified (or currently can't in my case) can't see the baiting option at all.

@vanilla OK, I did some research ......Baiting was introduced 20 July 2023 for Egg Caves 14th Birthday. Blog Post - https://eggcave.com/blog/egg-cave-turns-14-years-old?page=1According to that blog, only verified mains have the option. So you need to have supplied your phone number to see it.(Blog announcing SMS verification for mains and sides - https://eggcave.com/blog/you-can-now-formally-link-your-mains-sides?page=1 ).
