Ring around the rosy,
A pocket full of posy,
Ashes,
Ashes,
We all fall down....

Cute song, no? You imagine a bunch of kids turning in a circle, singing this song.

But you are about to learn the dark truth about this song...

This is an old song, around 500 years old. It came from within a period of 3 years 1347-1350. And in those years, a plague killed thousand of people in Europe called....

The Black Plauge.

"Ring around the rosy...."

This was one of the first signs of infection.... no more details.

"A pocket full of posy...."

People said that the plague was born in "foul air". So they though if they would protect themselves by making the air smell good by putting posy, a type of flower.

"Ashes, ashes..."

This was a child's way of paroxysm sneezing...

"We al FALL down..."

It's pretty obvious here....

Search in the Internet at your risk, some images you might find are disturbing.

Please don't report! If you don't like this, just tell me to shut it down. Thank you.

Every time my little cousins sing this song
I have to leave the room
Cause I think of the kids who actually sang this song waayyyyy back when
And what it meant to them vs/ us
;-;

Deleted • 24 April 2012 at 12:10 PM

I agree with @cafe. I actually yelled at my sister for teaching it to my niece, and she was all like, but it's just a cute little song ^^, and I said DON'T YOU KNOW WHAT IT STANDS FOR?! and she was like, the black plague... so?

I about died O.O

@Lightningember

I'm not Christian
But right there
I'd yell
"SATAN BE GONE"
and run out of the room
xD
Yelling "I hear no evil"

It's an inside joke xD

@chapus2009

I heard that back when I was in sixth grade. Very interesting.

Same as all the REAL fairy tales. They weren't all happy. They were just twisted to be happy by disney.

Did you know in the original Cinderella story that one of the sister's foot wouldn't fit, and when it wouldn't they sawed her foot to make it fit?

And in the original Little Mermaid story, the Mermaid dies. XD

😱
I did not know this. I don't think I'd be wanting to hear a child sing that song anymore...but I don't think I'd be wanting to explain to them why if I asked them to stop singing...

Actually, this has been debunked, the rhyme came before the plague even, there are many versions of it, but this is the most popular because of the theory

Most of the fairytales today have been Disney-transformed. XD I'm not even sure that is a word. And god, I thought this Topic was going to reported.

Thanks guys for being mature and not panicking. ❤️

@chapus2009

I bought the original "Grimm Brother's book of Faerie Tales" very gruesome indeed.

You need to see the Grimm Brother's movie. Quite interesting. Gives new meaning to "They get what they deserve"

Also, Cinderella had her stepmother and step sisters executed after she was married.

Actually, I didn't know what that song meant. *shrugs* You just filled my head with something! xD I first heard this when I was little. My dad bought some nursery rhymes and this was one of the songs in it when played.. But, I ALWAYS thought.. NO, this song is irking meh.. >.<" Everytime I heard this song at our neighbors house ('coz there was a baby in there and I used to go there), I was like o.e and *shivers*.

This is very old news. I remember learning this in middle school. It's rather disturbing how we teach our children to sing songs with hidden meanings.

@briseis I totally agree. Like some movies of Disney. Cinderella...Snow White....Little Meremaid.... And many more have been changed to suit child audiences.

@balletninja The reason it is disturbing, is because MANY people ignore (especially children) that this song has a terrible secret. So people sing it, like if it was some ordinary song. But it isn't....

@cubexline It's pretty hard to admit. Knowing that many of us have sang this song as a child, completely ignoring what it truly meant.

@chapus2009 I think it is a happy song about a sad subject, They are making light of it.

Besides, you grow up with hidden meanings, it is good to be exposed to them at a young age so that you realize the world isn't as 2D as it seems.

Actually, the ORIGINAL lyrics go:

Ring-a ring-a rosy
A pocket full of posies
Atichoo, atichoo
We all fall down

(Atichoo is a sneezing sound 😋)

And it's called the BLACK Plague.

...I'm doing a report in history class. 😋

Whether it really is about the bubonic plague or not, singing it with a higher pitch childish tone at night & adding "dead" at the end is still creepy 😉

@cqpkytty Oh DERP. Corrected. There are many versions. This is just ONE of them. So it's normal they are different. But you were right for the BLACK Plauge.... sorry. ^^"

@balletninja Well, it is life. I mean, you won't tell to a kid that this song is based on a infection that killed around one third of Europe's population... O.o

@dreamer
Same.
Also, we watched a video about the Black Death in history, and at the end it showed some kids playing and singing that song...and the way they sang the last line was SO CREEPY! It was in a really creepy tone of voice.
