Chiara hacked a tree branch out of the way with her knife. "Almost there," she muttered to herself. Ludwig growled and then ran ahead. Chiara followed until they reached the treehouse.

Caroline looked around, growing bored. She walked into another room, then went to the door leading to outside. She hesitated, then opened it, intending to get some fresh air.

Chiara reached the treehouse and looked up into the window. "Yo! Anyone there?" she called and hammered on the tree.

"Over here!" she called from the door, looking around the trunk. "Up here!"

Chiara waved to Caroline. She patted Ludwig. "You know the drill, you stay here." she told her dog, and he sat down by the tree. Chiara scrambled up the tree and came inside. "Ciao, Caroline! It's been a while!" she said. "What's up?" she asked and glanced around the room.

Caroline back into the treehouse, shutting the door. "It's been hectic," she told Chiara with a small shrug. "Lots of bad things have happened lately."

Caroline frowned. "A guy I met, Storm - he's somewhere in the treehouse - his two came down with something. They seem okay now. Rue is okay, except... she and Zach are um.."

Caroline looked back at Chiara and grinned. "Well," she said, glad in the change of topic. "There's not a lot, but we do have freshly cooked dinner from last night."
She made her way toward the kitchen and dining part of the treehouse.

Caroline glanced out the window she was passing.
"Are you sure you don't want Ludwig inside?" she asked. "I don't know if it's completely safe out there anymore."

Chiara shrugged. "Why not." she opened the door. "Ludwig, come-" she noticed that Ludwig was sitting next a dead bird. "What is that?" she asked. She examined the bird. Its legs and wings were dotted with wounds and welts. "Is that one of the weird animals?" she asked Caroline. "Ludwig, go inside." Chiara commanded, and her dog whined and walked indoors. She kicked the dead bird and walked back inside.

Caroline frowned. "It looks like it," she said. "A few days ago, before I knew any of this happened, I saw a few creatures that looked like that. Now I know something's wrong."
She thought to herself, muttering a soft "Hmm.."

"What's the world coming to?" Chiara grumbled. Ludwig lied down near the door and began to lick his paws. "I hope it's not contagious." she said. Then she got a piece of bread from the kitchen and ate it.

"I hope. Maybe he didn't touch it?" Chiara said through bites. She quickly finished the bread and got a new piece.
