How should I EV train my Bulbasaur? And what should my team be?

So, I'm going to play Pokemon Red, and I have decided that my starter will be Bulbasaur c: I'm new to EV training, so I was wondering what nature it should have and how I would EV train the Bulbasaur.

I also need some help coming up with a team O_O I'm definitely going to use Venasaur, though.

in your team you should have:

* water-type pokemon so in case you run across someone with a fire-type and to surf

* a flying-type ( i dont know if they have the HM fly) but if they do get a flying type

* a fighting-type or ground type to smash boulder and scale grounds.

* then some type of pokemon that can stand on 2 legs becuase your going to need to cut little trees down to get to areas behind them.

i havent played this pokemon game but i have expirience from the newer versions like soulsilver and black and white so i dont know if you need them in red. hope this is useful! ( and not confusing)

I've played pokemon a lot, but I've never done EV training O_O

@chapus2009 Okay, I'll go check it out. Do you know anyone who knows about stuff like this?

@jayjay1 EV training is quite complex, but the rewards of EV training a pokemon well are great. you can make a tyranitar lighting fast, an infernape a defensive wall, etc.

the concept is, when a pokemon faints another pokemon, it gains exp points, AND EV points. The EV points and type of EV point depend on the pokemon fainted.

So, say you battled and killed a wild geodude. geodude gives 1 EV point to defense. So the pokemon that fainted it gets 1 defense EV point. 1 EV point wont do anything; however, if you battled, say, 100 geodudes, the pokemon that fainted all them would recieve 100 EV points to defense. that pokemon will have vastly grater defense than a pokemon of the same species that hasnt reciened any defense EVs.

a single stat can hold a MAX of 255 EVs per stat. further more, a pokemon can only recieve 510 EV before EVs have no effect on it anymore. therefore, you should plan out how you distribute EVs to your pokemon to get the desired stat rise you need.

Battling 255 geodude would become very tiring, so instead you can give it some vitamins (IRON, to be precise) irons will give 10 evs to the stat that it says it will raise. there is a catch though. you can olnly give a pokemon a max of 10 vitamins per stat. therefore, if you wanted to give yer, say, infernape max defense, you could give it 10 irons to get 100 defense EVs, but the other 155 EVs will need to come from battling other pokemon.

@cat

Hm...

Team-wise, I'd recommend a Electric and Psychic type, considering they both have minimal weakness (Dark was introduced in Gen II, Bug is a barely used type) Water and Flying type to use Surf and Fly (alternatively, get a HM slave) When using a Flying type, I'd recommend for you to make it a dual-type that doesn't have Normal as one of its types. If you want to catch Pokemon, a Ghost type would also come in handy (it also serves as fodder for defecting normal types) Fighting, Rock and Ground types are alright choices, though they can be brittle or annoying to use. Ice doesn't even need to be considered, seeing as it has practically minimal defence and there are better Sp Attack types (Fire, for example) And, just saying, Dragonite is a good Pokemon to use c: (As nobody would use Ice anyway)

All of that is just my personal opinion and may not apply for you ^^;

EV training and natures...

Give your Bulbasaur a nature which gives it power where it needs and saps from its weaknesses. Give it attack and take the Speed away (you can always EV train the speed)

Reminds me, GRIND, GRIND, AND GRIND. I'm new to EV training, but, whenever you can, grind train your Pokemon. Diglett cave is a good idea to spam train - since it only ever has two types of Pokemon (I think they're HP/ ATK EVs, right?)

Lawl, but I'm new to most of this too, so yeah DX

@celeste Oh, thanks a bunch!

I'm thinking of using a Raichu and a Slowbro... I dunno.

Finally, the answer I was looking for 😊 Thanks a bunch.

But I just realized -- My brother told me that EV training doesn't exist in Red O_O

@cat

Glad I helped! X3

Raichu and Slowbro can be pretty good choices ^^ A Fire-type would help with Slowbro's weakness to Bug, though, you mightn't need to worry, seeing as Bug is a rarely-used type.

I once read in the Gen I games, Psychic is the best type ^^

It doesn't exist? O_O Too bad, I suppose 😋

Lol, BTW, I've ordered Pokemon Crystal, Yellow and a Pikachu Gameboy Colour from Amazon! 8D

@celeste I still need to play form Emulators </3

Though I'm buying a few from my friend! She doesn't have any gameboys.

Yeah, maybe Arcanine? I dunno.

@cat I have no clue about the EVs, but as for a team I have some suggestions:

(I'm suggesting early evolutions, assuming that you're early in the game/haven't started)

A pidgey- they're really great flying types and they can come in handy later like with fighting and grass types! 😊

Eevee- For the evolutions of course! 😊 I recommend evolving into vaporeon, to cover bulbasaur's weakness and to learn ice beam (that was a move in red, no???)

nidoran (female or male)- the later evolutions pack a lot of power and have great move sets! 😊

Pikachu/other electric type- electrics come in handy in the elite 4! 😊

Hope this helps! (sorry if I made a spelling mistake, I'm really tired!)

@cat

Well, 1st of all I suggest making sure your started Pokemon is always a LITTLE stronger than the rest.
When I was younger I didn't understand Pokemon had feelings XD I never bought items and trained them until they fainted ^^'
But I even beat the league WITHOUT ITEMS! 😱 I trained my Charizard so much he beat blastoise...
But anyway,

You should have a Pidgey or Spearow
Nidoran boy or Girl
I'd say catch some legendary birds later in the game 😋
When you can get eevee, get it.
Water type 😋
Ground or Rock type..
Fighting type maybe
Phsycic type maybe.

And there you have it! XD

@cat Use pokemon.marriland.com 😊 Got a good EV guide, and has a Team Builder to show you weaknesses/strengths.

Do you have Pokemon Black OR White? There's someone at the Battle Subway (after you've beaten the League) that REALLY helps you (okay, it only tells you the Pokemon's strongest stat and levels - average, superior, etc but that really helps with EV training). I can't give much info now, so just ask my questions - I EV train A LOT (lots of Pokemon EV train'd to Lv 100), and my step-bro is equally as good but more experienced (more Pokemon) so you can ask me 😊 It depends on your team, its levels, etc.

I'm not as good with the GBA versions (because the first game I played was a DS version so I was more used to the modern version), but I can still play it. I suggest (if you want me to help you a little more than I can) that you EV train on a modern game for a while to practise, see everything you need to do and get experience. THEN start to EV train on GBA versions and you'll be more used to it.

It takes a lot of determination, by the way 😉 I started EV training a few years ago and it's hard to keep going (to Lv 100).

@ninjagirl Hmmm... I think this will be my team;

Venusaur
Raichu
Poliwrath
Arcanine
Aerodactyl
Alakazam

I'm a bit of a hipster when it comes to Pokemon ^^' I dislike using over-used pokemon c:

@karamel Thanks! I'll do that for B&W 2. I found out that the first gen doesn't have EV training/natures -_-

@cat No wonder, I was thinking... But I didn't do EV training on GBA because a) I didn't like it as much as DS and b) I couldn't do it on there. I don't play GBA as much.

@cat

I'd go to serebii.net for EV stuff, but I recommend a water-type, fire-type, electric, flying, grass and bug-type for an elemental based team. Or you can take out the grass and replace it with a dragon or ice-type, though these appear later in Red, but they're extremely handy. Bug is a good type, for me, because it beats psychic, dark and grass.
