{Intro}

MintClan is located just off the end of a large lake. It is just far enough to avoid flooding, and the Clan itself is located in a small grove in the trees growing by the edge of the lake. The dens are woven from reeds and waterproof leaves, and are floatable in case of flooding.
They are a far cry away from kittypets and two-legs, making sightings of either of these very rare and uncommon, but not impossible. The Clan has lived in a relative peace for the past few moons, although the arrival of a few strange cats soon has that peace on a shaky foundation.

{The Camp}

A large wall of woven reeds encompasses the Clan, with one main entrance/exit, and two emergency exits located behind the warriors den and the medicine cat den. Coming in from the main entrance there is a small open space, and then off to the left side sits the leader's den. Across and a bit down is the warriors den, a fox-length away is the apprentices den. At the edge of the camp is the medicine den, elders den and nursery, with the nursery on the left side, the elders den on the right side and the medicine den in the middle with a smaller alcove woven for herb storage. Each den is lined inside with soft grass on the floor and the walls are lined with waterproof leaves to prevent leaks.

A small chest-like den sits in the middle of the camp, used for prey storage and can be closed in the event of rain to keep prey dry.

I yawned, waking up. I looked outside of the den, my chin resting on my paws. The startings of dawn light had started to appear in the sky. I sighed. Another dawn bringing in another day. The days seemed to all blur together now. Nothing ever threatened the peace for a while, and nothing had happened. Most cats would be greatful, and maybe its strange that im not to. But I can't help myself but wonder whats the point of all this. I'd been asking things like this ever since I lost everyone I was close to. Mouseclaw's daughters were still around, but they were not super close to me, and anyway, I don't think I could let them close. Who knows what would happen if I lost someone else. I had gotten lost in my thoughts. I small drip of dew landed on my nose, snapping me out of my thoughts. I got to my paws. / I'd better get out the dawn patrol./ I looked around the den to see who I could pick, and to see if anyone was awake.

{Snowburn}
I turned over, still half asleep, half opening my eyes. I shut them quick and got still when I saw Waspclaw was up. I liked helping the clan, but not at the crack of dawn. Then I sighed, knowing that I should just go because it'd be better if I went then if he had to wake some cat from full sleep. I slowly got to my paws, leaving my sisters side, the lucky furball was still asleep. Waspclaw opened his mouth, but I cut him off, "Yeah yeah dawn patrol I got it." I meowed, stepping out of the den to go wait for the patrol.

Wolfwind stirred as voices sounded near the front of the warriors den. She sat up, making out the figures of Waspclaw and Snowburn as the younger warrior left the den.

Not being able to head back to sleep now that she was awake, Wolfwind slowly crept away from her nest at the back of the den and stepped lightly over the sleeping forms of the other warriors. Reaching Waspclaw she whispered, "Do you still need others on the dawn patrol or is it fine?"

Cobra was jolted awake by morning dew trickling down into his pelt from the bush he was sleeping under. He stood up, shaking out his pelt, growling softly as a twig poked him in the ribs.

He slunk out from under the bush and looked around at the land he recently acquired after chasing off a small group of loners. Two of them had put up a fight, but Cobra was able to wound the skinnier of the two and the rest were already leaving by the time the fight was over.

It was a nice patch of land, with a small stream running right next to it leading to the lake. It would make a nice home for now.

"We could use another cat on the patrol." I meowed to Wolfwind. With how peaceful things were, we would not need a patrol of more then three cats. I padded out of the den by Snowburn and waited for Wolfwind.

Wolfwind nodded before she headed out into the main area of the camp. She looked over to Snowburn taking careful note of how the younger warrior was presenting herself.

Once everyone was gathered for the patrol I started to lead it, walking into the forest, follow the normal path as the dawn patrols did daily.

{Snowburn}
I followed along with the patrol, yawning slightly. I'd been out hunting late at night, but I wasnt going to let that stop me from patrolling. i cleared sleep out of my mind and made sure my senses where sharp and ready to sense if anything was out of the normal routine.

Thrushsong woke. She stretched and kicked Leopardfur awake. ''Wake up you lazy creature!'' She meowed kicking him again.

Leopardfur growled. He was enjoying that sleep. ''Did you have to do that Thrushsong!? I was going to wake in ten minutes anyway. And besides, that kick hurt!'' he growled.

Thrushsong laughed ''Your ten minutes is another hour! And oh look, the big strong tom is hurt by a small little kitty. Who are you going to complain to?'' She laughed.

Leopardfur looked at her, annoyed. ''Well. Seeing as I'm awake I must go and see if Leaftail is doing her job properly. Bye now!'' He said, walking with his head in the air. Behind his back Thrushsong rolled her eyes. He didn't know a thing about being a medicine cat!

Thrushsong looked around. The dawn patrol had left. She ran and ran through the usual path, just managing to catch up with them. ''What did I miss?'' she meowed happily.

Wolfwind walked slowly at the back of the patrol, her larger legs able to cover the distance left by the others in a couple strides as they trekked. She kept her head turned up, scenting the air as they passed one of the border. Rushing pawsteps sounded behind her and Wolfwind turned her head sharply to see Thrushsong catching up.

Cobra had just started heading by the stream for a morning drink when a slight breeze carried with it a putrid scent. His nose wrinkled and he scowled as he followed it, knowing that it meant some kind of rotten prey had shown up nearby.

He paused as he reached the spot with the upchurned dirt from his fight for this land. The blood from the tom he had fought had not dried as to be expected. Instead it had turned a dark red, or perhaps it was black, color where it had collected after Cobra wounded them.

He fought back the bile rising in his stomach as he realized that for whatever reason, the blood had managed to rot. Cobra blamed the frost.



Ravenpaw rolled over in her nest, the moss shifting and allowing a sharp end of a leaf to prod her. She shifted in her sleep trying to move away but finally awoke as the pain pulled her away from dreams. She scowled down at the leaf and readjusted the moss, realizing that most of her bedding had been kicked out of her nest.

She furrowed brow, dismissing it as her simply being a restless sleeper last night, and quickly gathered up the moss off the floor and rearranging it in her bed.

I flickled an ear as I saw Thrushsong catching up with the patrol. "You didn't miss anything." I meowed. "But we have enough cats on this patrol already. If you want to do something useful, go grab another cat and go hunting." I meowed. I didn't wait for a response and went on leading the patrol.

Thrushsong was secretly annoyed. She couldn't ask her brother. Because he was the most annoying cat she knew. She ran back to camp, rather annoyed.

Onyx looked around her. The sun was looking down upon the large lake making it shimmer. She couldn't see anyone around. She walked towards the lake and took a sip of the beautiful calm water. She then followed the path of a river until she came across a beautiful little area. She hid behind a rock and watched a she-cat walk into the area, obviously annoyed. She looked around before saying under her breath ''If she can go there, so can I.'' She prowled in the cats shadow.

I noticed Thrushsong seemed annoyed, but I shrugged it off. Their help wasn't needed on the patrol, I was only being honest. I sniffed around the borders, nothing really seemed out of the ordinary.

{Snowburn}
I walked behind Waspclaw, watching Thrushsong come to the patrol and leave nearly as quickly due to Waspclaw’s commands. I shrugged, I didn’t know what Thrushsong expected. If Waspclaw wanted another cat on patrol they would have woken another cat before leaving.

Wolfwind shook her head sympathetically after Thrushsong as she left. She probably didn't have anything better to do anyways. But everything had been very quiet on recent patrols. It didn't seem like many cats were even needed.

She fluffed up her fur as the breeze changed, bringing with it the rank scent of something rotting. Although it seemed to come from rogue land as opposed to Clan land.

Wolfwind scrunched up her nose trying to wash the scent away as she looked to the rest of the patrol. If a rogue was leaving prey to rot it might cause trouble for the Clan.

I nearly gagged as a putrid scent hit my nose, nearly causing me to reel back in disgust. I smelled somewhat like rotting flesh, but was somehow a tad different. But it was on rogue territory, so it wasn’t like we could just go in and investigate. But it is affecting us, and if this scent stays by tomorrow we will have to do something about it. “Cmon,” I meowed, covering my nose with one paw. “Lets pick up that pace and get away from whatever’s rotting. I’ll be sure to notify the leader about it.”

I nodded and definitely picked up my pace, wanting to get away from whatever rotten stench it was. “What kind of crowfood do those rogues let rot in their territory?” I mumbled.

Wolfwind nodded gratefully before answering Snowburns question. "I think it might be a squirrel. I found one a fox left on the first day of my apprenticeship. The smells almost match up." She explained, burrowing her nose into her tail as she quickened her pace.

Cobra had tried to avoid the rotting stench wafting from the blood, but as the wind stirred more and it wasn't calming down he was forced to retreat a small distance away. He glared at it, before realizing that being angry wouldn't do anything. Instead he stood up, prepared to cover it when he saw an acorn tumble down into it with a dull splaying sound.

He looked up at the squirrel running rapidly across the tree covering the clearing, deciding that he can hunt and then take care of the blood. But as he started to scale the tree he watched as another squirrel pulled the acorn up before running into a hole in the floor nearby.

Pausing his paw slipped and he tumbled down the tree with an angry growl. He covered the patch with overturned dirt as his former prey scurried away across tree branches.

I nodded, “I just hope the rogues take care of it soon, I don’t wanna go poking my nose in their business but if that stench inst taken care of by them some cat well have to take care of it.” Once the patrol had walked away, the smell started to die down to where I was able to remove my tail from my nose.

Wolfwind silently agreed with Snowburn. She hoped that they wouldn't have to send any cats over into rogue land, that would just make for a messy situation. And regardless, the further they moved from that one spot the less rank the scent was.

The patrol went on, and eventually the smelled faded away. I was more alert now, but still, everything else seemed to be calm and peaceful at the borders. I dragged my paws on, bored by all the daily uneventfulness. What was the purpose of all this? What was the purpose of anything? Life itself sometimes seemed like a pointless concept.

Blazestar exited his den as the sun began to rise more, he smiled in the growing light watching as a few others warriors began to leave their dens. Things had been very quiet, rogue activity wasn't nearly as big as it once was. They had passed through leaf-bare without losing many cats to greencough. Things were looking up.

Blazestar stepped into the middle of camp, striding over to where Quicksilver was making her way out of the elder's den.

"Good morning mother." he meowed politely dipping his head as he did so. "How did you sleep?"

I jumped awake, waking up from some stressful dream, although when I thought back to try to remember it, I forgot what it was about. I yawned and shook the feeling off. I got to my paws and out of the den. I looked around for something I could do, nodding a greeting to Heathersnow who was sitting outside the nursery. Having nothing better to do I bounded over to the she-cat. “Good morning Heathersnow.” I meowed.

“Morning, Smokeraven.” I meowed greeting the younger warrior. “I was actually meaning to talk to one of the warriors today, there seems to be a hole in the side of the nursery that keeps letting cold air in at night. It's not much trouble now but come leaf-bare it will be, do you think you could get some warriors to work on patching it up?” I meowed.

"Not very well, I believe there might be thorns in my bedding." Quicksilver replied watching her son carefully.

Ever since he exiled Viperfang, Quicksilver seemed to notice a detached air from her son. As if he no longer had any worries hanging down over him. It was weird, especially when he avoided those Viperfang was once close to like they had greencough.

Blazestar merely nodded, "I'll see about getting the apprentices on that." He meowed before leaving Quicksilver alone with her thoughts.

Smokepaw stirred in his nest as voices sounded from the den entrance. He slunk out of the empty apprentices den and looked around. His mentor was talking with Heathersnow about the drafts in the nursery, and currently Smokepaw had nothing to do.

He glanced at the camp entrance, knowing that the dawn patrol was set to return soon. Hopefully after Smokeraven fixed the nursery, Smokepaw could get a hunting lesson if he was lucky.

I turned to notice my apprentice, "Smokepaw," I meowed, "perfect timing." I meowed, flicking my tail for him to come closer. "I want you to help me patch up the queens den, then we'll go out and train."

I could see the camp now, the patrol was at its end. I padded a little faster, heading into camp. The smell wasnt much, but it was still something to report. I padded up to Blazestar, "Blazestar." I meowed, "While out on patrol, we caught a scent of something foul and rotting in rouge territory."

Smokepaw nodded bounding up to Smokeraven. "Alright." He meowed excitedly.

I looked at the hole in the nursery, "We are going to need a few more reeds and waterproof leaves to patch this up." I meowed. I turned to Smokepaw and starting walking out of camp, "Come on, the sooner we can fix the nursery, the sooner we can get to hunting."

Smokepaw nodded following his mentor out of the camp. He glanced at Smokeraven for a moment before he spotted the bush storing the leaves they used for waterproofing.

"Do you want the reeds first or the leaves?" He asked.

Blazestar nodded. "Thank you Waspclaw. I'll go check it out with a few warriors, I'll be taking Snowburn since she was on the patrol and Darkshadow. But I'll take a look later today to give them time to rest." He meowed.

I walked into the warriors den, noticing my sister was still fast asleep. I gave her a sharp prod with my paw. "Hey, time to get up." I meowed.

{Smokeraven}
"We need the reeds first, what are we going to put the leaves on if we have no reeds?" I meowed to Smokepaw. I went on walking until not to far away I found some reeds and bit them off at the stems.

Smokepaw nodded, "You're right." He meowed, snapping off a few reeds as he saw Smokeraven doing.

Silentfall padded out of the warriors den as he saw Wolfwind entering the camp. His sister looked troubled, and Waspclaw had just walked away from telling Blazestar something.

Had the patrol gone wrong or something? he wondered, bounding up to his sister.



Blazestar stepped into the warriors den, eyes searching for Darkshadow as he spotted the tom's sleeping form. He shook him with one paw, whispering as he did so. "Darkshadow, I need you to get up and eat something by sunhigh. I'm taking a small patrol with me to go investigate some strange smell by the border."

That done, he slipped out of the den, hoping he could catch Snowburn when she wasn't talking to her sister. After a moments thought he decided to include Leaftail in on their patrol, if one of the rogues or loners had died of disease he wanted someone with him who knew how to deal with taking care of it before it spread.

He walked towards the medicine den, hoping to find Leaftail awake.
