With over 200 million stray animals in the world, people and animals are getting closer than ever. This is mostly due to the spike in the stray animal population.

Many stray animals have diseases like rabies, although the disease is uncommon. Some more common diseases are Dermatophytosis, (dr·muh·tow·fai·tow·suhs) also known as cat-scratch disease, causes skin, hair or nail infections. Toxocariasis (tox·o·ca·rye·ah·sis), which is also fairly common in stray animals. Toxocariasis is caused by roundworms which are caused by three types of parasites. Cat roundworms, dog roundworms and fox roundworms. Animals are able to transfer these roundworms to humans, which cause changes in behaviour and ability to sleep, but will also cause fever, coughing, wheezing, etc. Animals with rabies normally cause unprovoked attacks and are deadly if left untreated.

Like I said in the introduction, there has been a spike in the stray animal population starting in the 2000s. Some places with the most stray animals are China, with 27.4 million strays, Russia, with 15 million strays, Japan with 12 million strays, The Philippines with 11.6 million and India with 10.2 million strays. Animal shelters are getting full with stray cats and dogs, and 56% of dogs and 71% of cats that enter shelters are euthanized and only 15.8 percent of dogs and 2 percent of cats are reunited with their owners. Luckily, the percentage of euthanasia has lowered drastically since 1997.
