You carefully walk up the asteroid and attempt to steal an egg...

Oh no! You were swept up in a massive windstorm and had to take shelter!

In Sophocles' play Oedipus the King, the metaphors of vision and blindness are employed to highlight the central themes of knowledge and ignorance.
Vision as insight and truth
Teiresias is a blind man with prophetic visions (truth), which Oedipus refuses to believe
Dramatic irony, Oedipus mocks Teiresias’ blindness, but as the sighted one is blind to the truth about his own origins and actions
Oedipus does not know his origin sor identity, and is blind to his true actions and relationships, though the truth is revealed to him in the end
When Oedipus and Jocasta exchange details about Laius’ murder or the child with bound feet, neither feel compelled to remark on the coincidental nature of their recollections. This makes the tragic irony painfully obvious to the audience, while emphasising how Oedipus and Jocasta remain ignorant to the truth
He does not recognise that the description of Laius’ murder matches his own killing of a man at the crossroads, and fails to see the connection. His own blindness prevents him from solving the mystery anda recognising his own role, despite his self-proclaimed wisdom that he prided himself in.
His blindness and ignorance lead to his tragic downfall as he fulfils the prophecy he tried to escape
Suggests that one must confront unpleasant truths rather thwn remain blindly ignorant
How Oedipus’ blindness stems from his arrogance / ignorance / lack of self-knowledge
Oedipus accuses Teiresias of conspiring against him with Creon out of envy, rather than believing the prophet's words when told the truth of his origins and destiny. His ego leads him to dismiss the truth.
Oedipus scoffs that Teiresias's blindness prevents him from knowing the truth, ironically unaware of his own deeper blindness / ignorance. This shows his arrogance and belief that he has perfect insight, which ultimately drives Teiresias to become an adversary rather than an ally
Even as the truth begins to come out, Oedipus accuses Creon and others of trying to overthrow him, rather than accepting that he could be at fault or that his view of things may be wrong. His arrogance makes it hard for him to consider he may have been mistaken or misled, breeding paranoia and animosity
When the Messenger arrives and tells him the truth about his parentage, Oedipus is angry that he and the others kept the truth from him, rather than reflecting on his own willful ignorance and blindness to the signs. His arrogance makes it difficult for him to blame himself.
if he had self knowledge, he would have known iphis parents and so would not have killed laius or married jocasta. with knowledge of his own origins and identity, he could have avoided the sins that he ultimatel ycommitted; would have heeded Teiresias’ prohetic warnings, might have graasped the truth sooner to avoid his fate
insight into himself snd his flaws may have bred humility instead of anger and arrogance in reaponse to criticism or prophecy, might have been less prideful and ore willling to accept hard truths
Ultimately, his arrogance and blindness lead to his tragic downfall, as he refuses to accept the truth until it is fully revealed, at a time too late to avoid his tragic fate.
Loss and gain of vision
Oedipus is hailed as the man who solved the riddle of the Sphinx through vision and perception
Oedipus gains vision into the truth only after literally blinding himself; only gains self knowledge after denying himself outward sight
In gouging out his eyes, Oedispus finally acknowledges his own blundness and ignorance, which allows him to finally see clearly
Paradoxically, it is his self-inflicted blindness that allows him to see clearly for the first time, His physical blindness is a punishment, but also atonement that grants him inner vision and ultimately reconciliation with the truth
paradoxical irony reinforces centralmessage about inner and outer vision, knowledge and ignoran e, physical sight and real insight
accepting loss and hardship can lead to wisdom
contrwst with oedispus’ detwchment with suffering st the beginning of the play vs having experienced sufering firsthand with his boindness
The recurring metaphors of vision and blindness highlight the play's central themes of knowledge and ignorance, truth and self-delusion, and the difference between outward sight and insight.

ooooops, that's a LOT of typos
