Help Categorize Creatures for EggCavity Please!

Hello Everyone. I am trying to add a categories feature to eggcavity's creature index. I am starting with animal-inspiration but ideally we'd also have categories for Halloween, Christmas, Easter, etc. Please feel free to throw out one category suggestion or a ton. With over 1000 creatures I need all the help I can get! All creatures are in alpha order except the ones from this month, they're at the bottom.

No problem! :-D I’ve always loved proofreading, stuff like that just pops out to me.
It’s nice when it’s in a setting where I’d be encouraged to point it out. I’ve stifled myself a LOT when something could be corrected, so as to not be taken the wrong way. 😅
And it’s also not the end of the world if something is spelled wrong or is a typo or a grammar mistake.

wow! I haven't had a moment at all today to work on this and the volunteers have already been knocking it out of the park! It's amazing work!


I think at some point though the categories could be broadened/narrowed down. (like lumping alligators & whales in together as aquatic/semi-aquatic, holidays, camels & scorpions in desert, flamingo & penguins in birds, etc. Keeping the most popularly requested ones like cats/big cats, dogs/canines, dragons, and horses their own.)
(* Example: something like a Polober could still be listed in arctic, bear, and holiday.)

opinions anyone?
I currently feel It's nice having specifics to find things quickly, but i think having as many as there currently are can be counter-productive/overwhelming too.


Small personal note, I always think of the Cackamon first and foremost as a dragon ^^ even if not a traditional one. (dessert too of course, as already labeled.)

Lucy is working on narrowing it down. 😊 I agree that we should try to keep it concise, but I don't think that alligators and whales should be in the same category. Perhaps Reptiles and Fish or Reptiles and Ocean instead, for alligators and whales respectively. We need to find that sweet spot of nice specifics for easy browsing, but not too specific so as to have 300 categories. ^.^

Edit: That being said, whales may be grouped with fish to clean it up a bit, though they are mammals. But whales, sharks, fish could all be listed in an Ocean category. c:

I added an Aquatic category, but I do think whales deserve they're own group.
Whales aren't technically fish, just like foxes aren't canines so it makes it hard to decide on where to draw a line.

I cut out lots of things like "woodland" and "other". All of which are good ideas for categories, just counterproductive. Hopefully we can end in a good spot.

I will probably end up customizing the categories list so that Bird subcategories only show up on the bird catgegory page (if that makes sense)


And @daisycat
I'm sorry a lot of these creatures categories you've probably already suggested and I cut them because I was like "Is that actually a dog???" or just like "I don't even know how to categorize this in a way that is helpful to people"

I think it's ok if not every creature has a category to keep categories more useful

Ultimately, you can make the final decision or you can use polls, whichever or whatever is okay with me. 😊 I'm just trying to brainstorm on some of them (I know you know), because... some are like that one photo that's a representation of what having a stroke looks like. Anyone ever seen that? Like you see objects, kind of, but you can't identify or make out what any of the objects even are?

Stroke simulations, aka, what it feels like looking at some of the "other" creatures, trying to define them. 😅 Meant in a light-hearted way! ❤️

You worded it perfectly with trying to find that sweet-spot. And being concise, but not lumping too many things in together.

(Even the alligator / whale example was a little cringe for me, but I'm multi-tasking right now and was trying to think of something quickly to make the point..)

(Though the prehistoric creature enthusiast that I am kinda had en eye twitch at an alligator being lumped in with lizards . LOLs! ngl. : P
But I mean... they don't exactly fit in with dinos either.
I was thinking of it and things like the Skreel for a semi-aquatic category. *shrug emoji*
mainly for anything that doesn't fit neatly into the other categories like fish, or ocean,)


@lbowe_elbow This is a HUGE undertaking, and there will be lots of adjustment... and lots of opinions.
The main thing will be what will be easiest for you to maintain. ^^ (And we'll all have to be fine with that. - I mean that in the most grateful way. I appreciate what you're doing SO much!)

(and foxes are actually canids by the way. Not to argue, but by current science classification they are in the same Family group as dogs.)

an "other" category could be useful for random creatures that are still waiting classification. Perhaps it could be "Other & New" ?

My decision for objects was like: Is this creature an object and only an object. In which case I would categorize as such, because I think when looking in that category I wouldn't be looking for the snowglobe creatures, I would be looking for the weird crypto coin lol

My decision for plants was very similar. Is this an animal with a plant or is this a plant come to life?

I went back and added caterpillar to all the butterfly and moths lol. I was trying to cut down but then there was a friggin caterpillar only creature so I decided to go back and add it.

I feel like after looking at all these creatures that I don't know what a dragon is anymore lol

Lol when I googled it it was like it's not a canine it's in the canidae family. And I was like "ok" lol. I don't know anything about classifications and that sounded good enough for me d:
