❄️ ❄️ ❄️Welcome to Okami’s Questing Guide! ❄️ ❄️ ❄️

There is a Player Guide: Quest page created by the Eggcave Team, but some aspects of it are currently outdated and give a very basic summary of quests. I consider myself a pretty experienced quester (at the time of writing, I’ve successfully completed ~2,000 quests), and I wanted to provide a more up-to-date and in-depth overview of quests to help players who are newer to the activity! If you have general suggestions or things to add to the Q&A section, please feel free to comment~

*✧・゚:*✧・゚:*✧・゚:*✧・゚:* *✧・゚:*Questing Q&A *✧・゚:*✧・゚:*✧・゚:*✧・゚:**✧・゚:*✧・゚:*

What are quests?
Quests are activities where you are asked to obtain and submit 2 items from a specific shop! Quests are how you earn Quest Tokens to exchange for creatures at The VEND Machine. There are currently 6 types of quests, and each quest type asks for 2 items per quest. You have to search for and move those requested items into your inventory before pressing the "I have it all!" button in order to successfully complete a quest.

How long do I have to complete a quest?
You have up to 12 hours to complete each specific quest. If you are unable to complete that specific quest in 12 hours, then you will have failed that quest. If you successfully complete that specific quest in 12 hours, then you will be rewarded with a Quest Token and have to wait 5 minutes until you can start another of that specific quest type.

Will I be penalized if I cancel/fail a quest?
The only penalty for canceling/failing a quest is that you have to wait one hour until you can try that specific quest type again. There is currently no tracker for the number of quests a user has failed.

What items do quests ask for?
There are currently 6 types of quests that can ask for any currently available items from specific NPC shops. Quests will never ask for retired or CC items, and currently do not ask for items from The Bean Sack or Trinket Travels.

🍰 Baked Bun Quests: Asks for items available at The Bakery
🌊 Going Global: Asks for items available at The Travel Agency
🍓 Gourmand Quests: Asks for items available at The General Food Store
🍫 Miserable Meltdown: Asks for items available at Finley’s Flavors
🦉 Speed Reading: Asks for items available at Leila Library
🌸 Toybox Quests: Asks for items available at The Toy Shop

Which quest is the easiest to complete?
This is a difficult question to answer since every quest type asks for 2 items per quest, meaning that they should all technically be equally difficult. However, in my opinion, the easiest quest type to successfully complete is Miserable Meltdown.

I came to this conclusion from personal observation and from looking at the current number of existing items on Egg Cave. As of 8/18/23, Finley's Flavors has 420 unique items (this includes available and retired items). This is the lowest number of items across all stores, with the second lowest being The General Food Store at 585 items. This means that there are less items that can be asked for from the Miserable Meltdown quests and it is easier to stockpile all available items from the pertaining shop.

Not-so-fun fact: Up until May 2023, Miserable Meltdown only asked for 1 item per quest!

Which quest is the hardest to complete?
In my opinion, the hardest quest type to successfully complete is Going Global.

As of 8/18/23, The Travel Agency has 1,448 unique items (this includes available, retired, and CC travels). Even if we subtract all the retired/unavailable travels though, the number of items currently available in The Travel Agency would still be far greater than any other shop. The second highest shop is currently Leila Library at 804 items.

Where can I get items?
The first place to look for items is the NPC shops! The shops regularly restock their items about every 10-15 minutes, and the items available will vary with every restock (some items being higher rarity than others, meaning they restock less often). You can also search for and purchase items from user shops , but these items are generally priced higher than those found in the NPC shops. You can hold up to 50 items in your inventory at a given time, and can hold an unlimited number of items in your strongroom.

What is The VEND Machine?
The VEND Machine is where you can exchange your earned Quest Tokens for rare, retired creatures!

How do I earn Quest Tokens?
You earn 1 Quest Token for each specific quest type that you complete. (Example: You will earn one Toybox Quest Token for every Toybox Quest that you successfully complete).

Can I trade my tokens with other users?
No, tokens cannot be transferred or shared between accounts.

How long are creatures available in The VEND Machine?
There is currently no published amount of time for how long a specific creature is available in The VEND Machine. Some creatures have been removed in the past due to limited interest, but many are removed once an undisclosed set number of them have been obtained from The VEND Machine.

The Eggcave Team announces in blog posts when a specific creature’s stock is running low. (Click HERE for an example of a low stock announcement). When a specific creature’s stock is running low, they will only be available for a limited number of days after the announcement and a countdown timer will show on The VEND Machine page. Once the countdown timer reaches zero, that specific creature is removed from The VEND Machine stock. According to the Player Guide Q&A though, The Eggcave Team is not required to give notice for VEND creature removals.

What kinds of creatures can be available in The VEND Machine?
Currently, only non-cc exclusive creatures are eligible to be in The VEND Machine stock. Creatures that are/can be available include retired cave monthlies and retired event creatures (examples: creature release week, holidays, etc).

How valuable are The VEND Machine creatures?
Some creatures in The VEND Machine are considered higher value than others. Many factors including the species population and number of tokens needed to obtain the creature can affect this value. But ultimately, the value of creatures can vary from user to user. General value guides can be found on the forums (Example of a value guide: Nut’s Creature Value Guide).

Some users may consider the original, non-VEND counterparts to be more valuable than creatures obtained from The VEND Machine, while others don’t particularly care about the origin of the creature. You can determine whether or not a creature was obtained through The VEND Machine by looking at their profile. Creatures obtained through The VEND Machine have a VEND image at the bottom of their profile. (Click HERE for an example of a VEND creature profile).

Is questing expensive?
Over time, yes, you will be spending a lot of EC on questing! But don’t worry, there are plenty of ways to earn EC on the site. Some ways include feeding creatures, trading/auctioning off creatures for EC, trading CC for EC, reselling items in your user shop, and participating in the daily site trivia.

*✧・゚:*✧・゚:*✧・゚:*✧・゚:* *✧・゚:*Okami’s Questing Tips & Tricks *✧・゚:*✧・゚:*✧・゚:*✧・゚:**✧・゚:

There is no right or wrong way to go about completing quests, but I am going to describe the tips/methods that I personally use!

Build up your stockpile of items
If you are new to questing, the first thing that you should do is build up your stockpile of items in your strongroom! This will be a significantly large investment, but will eventually pay off and be cheaper than only getting items from user shops. When I first began questing, I regularly went through all the quest-pertaining NPC shops and compared those items to what I had in my strongroom. I tried to make sure that I had at least 2 of each reasonably priced item that I came across.

If you are questing solely to complete your dailies and not with the goal of earning creatures, then I recommend only stockpiling for 1-2 shops. As of 8/18/23, Miserable Meltdown and Gourmand Quests are likely the 'easiest' to stockpile for (refer to the above Q&A section for further explanation).

Don't be afraid to cancel quests
Decide whether or not you are going to cancel a quest within the first few minutes. Below, I have detailed step-by-step how I personally decide if I will be canceling a quest or not:

1. Is at least one of the items extremely expensive? (My personal cutoff is over 4k ec in the NPC shops). If yes, I always cancel the quest. I’ve done enough questing where I usually know if an item is extremely expensive or not at a glance, but if you’re unsure about values you can look up items in the Item Database. When you click on an item in the item database, the "Restock Price" listed below the item is how much it sells for in the pertaining NPC shop.

2. If the item is not extremely expensive- Is at least one of the items currently in the NPC shop? If yes, I purchase that item(s), so I am not deducting from my strongroom stockpile.

3. Is the remaining item(s) that I need currently in my strongroom? If yes, I move those items to my inventory.

4. Was I able to get both needed items from the NPC shop/strongroom? If yes, complete the quest! If no, move on to the next step.

5. Are the remaining needed item(s) currently in any user shop for a reasonable price? My personal cutoff is 4k ec, but your personal cutoff can be lower or higher depending on how much ec you have/are willing to spend. If I cannot purchase the item(s) in a user shop for my cutoff price or lower, then I cancel the quest.

Other note: There is a forum where you can give and request needed quest items from other users, but this is a fairly unreliable method with no guarantee you will be sent the item(s) you’re looking for within 12 hours. I feel that it is a timesaver in the long-run to cancel quests that you cannot quickly find the item(s) for.

Regularly replenish your strongroom
Regularly restocking is important because new items are always being added, and you’re constantly deducting from your strongroom stockpile while questing. Since I have a pretty established stockpile, when I restock, I generally only focus on one NPC shop at a time (usually the one that I’m currently focusing on for quests). I regularly check the NPC shop that I’m currently restocking from, search those items in my strongroom, and buy so that I have at least 3 of each item.

Strongly focus on one quest type at a time
I personally only strongly focus on one quest type at a time. This doesn’t mean that I won’t do other quest types during this time, but I will only look in the NPC shops/my strongroom for those other non-focus quests- if I can’t find both items in those places, then I don’t bother checking the user shops. Most user shop items are largely upscaled in price, so if you’re pulling from these shops for every single quest you do, you’ll be using up a ton of EC.
For the one quest type I’m focusing on, I will check the NPC shop, strongroom, and user shops. This quest type is also what I focus my restocking efforts on.

Example: At the time of writing this, I am currently focusing on the Baked Bun Quests. I check the Bakery NPC shop and my strongroom for items, and will buy needed items at 4k ec or under in the user shops. I am also regularly restocking my strongroom with Bakery NPC shop items during this time.
Since I am primarily focusing on the Baked Bun Quests, if I do another quest (ex: Going Global) and the item is not in the NPC shop or my strongroom, I cancel that quest since I am currently limiting myself to only buying Baked Bun Quest items from user shops.

Thank you! ❤️ I looked through the forums prior to making this and couldn't find a similar topic guide; I really hope that it'll be helpful to link new players to before they start questing because I remember it being a pretty overwhelming process to get the hang of. x)

❄️❄️❄️UPDATE ❄️❄️❄️

(@okami's side here)

I have updated the initial post to include a list of currently available and retired VEND creatures! I went through past blog posts to find dates of when creatures were released/retired from the VEND and while I was able to find a lot, there are still many dates that I could not find evidence of. If anyone is aware of unknown dates/number of releases/etc, please let me know and I will update the list! 😊

@okami This is very comprehensive and useful - well done.

Adjacent to questing, I suggest after stockpiling your strongroom with the one item type, you stock up your user shop with the extras. It's a solid way to make money for questing - especially during periods of panic questing due to retirement of creatures 😊
