Story of a Doll

The Doll Maker left the open door, hoping that if he did not pressure the poor child, she would enter the house of her own accord, he did not want to scare her after all.

Though he did wish that she would come in from the cold...

Hearing the quiet voice of Cam, one of his earliest creations, the old man looked up and gave a small smile towards the shy Doll.

"Why my dear, I thought I told you to rest this afternoon, I am not quite so old that I can not take care of myself for a day," he chided teasingly.

Then, recalling the small girl behind him, the Doll Maker shook his head slowly in bemusement.

"Actually," he began, "if you do not mind Cam, would you set the table for three instead?"

The old man shuffled further from the open door when a cold draft blew in, idly cursing the cold as his joints started to ache slightly, but the pain was quickly forgotten as the notes of a soft melody reached his ears.

'The violin?' puzzled the old man, 'now who would be playing that-'

"Oh!" he said, "never mind silly old me Cam, could you set the table for four instead? Then be a dear and get Benjamin to join us will you?"

With that, he patted Cam on the head, a fatherly gesture empty of condescension, and moved to the kitchen.

Stopping only to call back, "you should come in dear child, I am certain Cam has something sweet for you to nibble on."

Cam scampered off to prepare, shaking his head as he did so. He usually preferred to eat tea away from guests, as eating seemed to make him feel even more self-conscious, but truly, he did like meeting them, he was just... Worried about making a good impression.
After digging out the caramel slice, the cinnamon rolls, pouring the tea and laying it all out nicely on the table, he went in search of Benjamin as requested.

The Doll Maker hummed softly to himself as he shuffled towards a mahogany door to the left, where the parlour was, ready to receive guests. He gestured briefly at the plush sofas surrounding a Victorian-esque coffee table stood proudly.

"Have a seat dear, Cam has already set up, goodness knows how the lad does it so fast," he waved a hand in the direction of the lovely spread on the table, "help yourself."

That said, he lowered himself carefully onto a sofa by the fireplace and took a moment to observe the small girl.

She was a little young for his liking, but he supposes that children need friendship and love more than any adult.

He startled out of his thoughts when she spoke and nodded towards the table, "of course dear, Cam is very thorough when preparing tea."

The old man lowered his voice conspiratorially, "tea is very important you know." He winked.

Alicia sat down, and began to primly sip her tea, and eat some of the delicious, sweet food in front of her. Savoring each bite, she found herself so immersed within the taste of the food that her responses to the Dollmaker's statements were slow, and sounded almost hurried. "Your hospitality is very much appreciated Mr Dollmaker. Please send my regards to Mr Cam, as well. The tea is very flavorful, and each of the desserts have a place in my heart."

The Doll Maker granted the small girl in front of him a bemused smile, "think nothing of it, I could not bear to let a young lady such as yourself wait in the cold rain."

The smile grew as she continued speaking, crinkling his eyes around the edges.

"Well," he said when she finished, "I believe that you should thank Cam yourself when they come back. I am certain that he will appreciate your kind words."

The old man paused to sip delicately at his tea, eyes trained on the small girl, gaze sharpening as he recalled the purpose of her visit.

"So tell me Alicia, why are you in need of a Doll?"

"Oh, yes, regarding the Doll. I come from a rich family - though it is nothing to boast about - and my parents aren't at my house often. I've been privately tutored my whole life, and I barely have any friends of my own age, and even the ones I have can't afford to visit me regularly. I would like a companion, to help me pass the long hours of waking, which are filled with monotony. I thought perhaps a robotic companion may be quite pleasant, for somebody like me. Oh, yes," Alicia continued "I must thank Mr Cam for the delectable food and tea. Would you care to show me where he is right now?"

The Doll Maker listened intently as Alicia spoke, feeling a hint of compassion for the poor girl. Parents never seem to realize that money did not negate a child's desire for love and affection.

He sighed, "I understand my dear, but the fact is, your offer of paperclips, coins and other items are not enough to purchase a Doll, much less maintain one."

Then, he paused, humming thoughtfully, the old man stared at her, "but if you would not mind," he struggled for a bit then finally he spoke again, "could you perhaps go find Cam and bring him to me? I believe he should be upstairs somewhere."

That said, he turned and smiled at Lilly, "why hello dear, I do believe there is a visitor at the door, why don't you go answer it?"

Roselynn shifted in the back of her white carriage, nervously twisting a lock of blonde hair around her finger. She paused and looked out the window again.

She hoped the Doll Maker wouldn't mind her dropping in a day early, but she was just so excited to meet her Doll!

Roselynn allowed a butler to open a huge green umbrella for her once the carriage stopped and daintily made her way to the front door, where the same butler knocked politely on the mahogany surface.

She hoped her Doll was ready to come home with her!

A loud *BANG!* emanated from the kitchen. Charlotte poked her head out. "Sorry! I was trying to make a flambe...I'm not quite sure what happened!" she called to the Doll Master.

"Oh, I see... I don't want to be a bad girl, and steal some of my parent's money. I'll go find Mr Cam, however. Thank you, still, for your hospitality." she curtsied once again, and set off to find this 'Mr Cam'. She decided that the most likely place he would be is in the kitchen, and poked her head inside. "Hello?"

"Benjamin? Benjamin!" Cam called, searching upstairs for the doll. "Where could he be?" He sat down on the floor wondering, his face sliding into a pout. "I bet he wants to play hide in seek again." He got up and started searching the closets.

Benjamin heard Cam calling for him. Blinking, he set down the violin and wandered out into the hallway to find him poking his head into a cupboard. Uncertainly, he stood behind Cam and waited for him to finish searching for what ever he was looking for.

"You're not going to defeat me this time, Benjamin," Cam laughed evilly under his breath then turned around.
"Oh hey Benji!" He pulled him into a sudden, tight hug, although he was so short he was barely half Benjamin's height. "Yay! Master wants us to have tea with a guest!" Cam exclaimed happily. "Let's go!"
