-Introduction-

"In the beginning," she began, "there was rock, and sky, and water. Then, there were the gods. The gods themselves were numerous, but of the creators, there were six. The first was of fire, who sought to light and warm the barren land from above and from below. The second was of air, who stirred the empty sky and cooled the hot lands with his breath. The third was of water, who cleaned the earth and filled the basins of the ocean. Then came the goddess of earth, who made the soil fertile and the plants numerous. The fifth and sixth were the most mysterious, and the mightiest as well; these were the gods of life."

The woman paused now. Her dark brown eyes glanced over the audience. She was of medium height and thick build, with widely set shoulders and bronze skin. Wavy, russet-colored hair flowed barely to her shoulders, with two tawny bird feathers braided into it. Her hands were broad and callused, though they possessed a certain grace, like that of a large cat.

"These two were often called the True Creators. They filled the earth with each and every creature we know, from the smallest ant to the mightiest dragon. Under the nurturing hands of these two entities, our races blossomed. In this time, each and every one of us possessed magic. Mountain deer could fly; animals could sleep for an eternity and never age a day.

"However, the world was not without trouble. Each of the Two Creators fancied themselves the superior. This eventually came to brutal conflict. War was declared between the two givers of life, and each creature they had once created, they sent forward to die.

"For years, the earth served only as a battleground. The tragedy would see no end until a victor appeared. In a land far beyond this one, the final battle was won; under a black sky, one god held the life of the other within her hands. She could not bring herself to kill him, however. She saw too much of herself within him. The losing god, the creator of the humans, was banished to a world beyond. He and all his creations were stripped of their magic. This is why many creatures today, including humans, lack the magic that many creatures are born with. However, there were a few exceptions.

"Some of humankind refused to fight on the side of its God. For whatever reason, they chose to stand aside, or even join the ranks of the Goddess. These individuals, and all their descendents, retained their inherent magic. Many generations have passed since the Great War. However, the descendents of these people still exist today. You," she said, her gaze passing over them all, "and I," she said, splaying her fingers over her heart, "are among them."

-The Magicians-

Magic is highly specialized. The natural magical creatures of the world are proof of this. (For example, elves can perform magic that has to do with plants, but very little else. A Phoenix possesses only two special powers: fiery wings and regeneration.) Human magic is widely varied. Individual magicians, however, will experience an affinity for one type of magic, and a lack of proficiency in all other fields. Due to a highly diluted bloodstream, the magicians of today possess only moderate power.

The only other way to achieve magical power is to take it from a magical creature. Tradition holds that if a mythical creature is slain, and a token is taken from it while its blood still runs warm, then the holder of that token will possess the power of the fallen creature. Tokens can be anything--fur, teeth, claws, feathers, etc. They simply have to be on the person of the one who wishes to use their magic. It is notoriously difficult to kill any mythical creature, much less the ones with desirable powers, so these types of magicians are rare. They are referred to as "masters," depending on the creature they've slain. For example, a man with dragon magic would be called Dragonmaster.

-The Mages-

The human kingdom is a large one. It holds lots of valuable land and resources. Because of humans' inherent vulnerability to magical creatures, the late King Damek created a knighthood for magicians. He named these magic knights the mages.

The mages are structured within a four-tier hierarchy. Because of the late onset of magic in humans (typically between age 13 and 16) there is no page stage. Mages begin as squires, called apprentices. At the completion of their training, typically around age 20, they are dubbed. These individuals become complete mages. They are given the title "Sir" or "Lady." Beyond this is the master stage, achievable only by single-handedly slaying a magical creature. There have never been more than four of these at one time in the history of the mages. Lastly, the highest in command is the captain.

The mages are led by Captain Riren, a prominent geomancer. Five years ago, he succeeded in driving a dragon from the kingdom's largest deposit of gold, saving the lives of countless miners. Since then, he has been immensely popular in the public eye.

-Setting-

This roleplay begins at the mages' fortress. Apprentices are to be training, either with weapons or with their magic. Mages and masters are to be patrolling, discussing strategy or missions, performing maintenance on their weapons, or handling other business. Rumor has it that a large mission is to be assigned today, so magicians of all levels are hesitant to stray too far for fear of missing an announcement.

The fortress is built into the grey stone walls of the castle. It serves as housing for the mages and as a defensive stronghold. Gardens line the walkways to the castle and the outer roads.

The weather is pleasant, warm and partly cloudy. The time is around noon.

@Silver_winged
Yes, I was wondering about most of the families that the mages and apprentices came from. Are most of the families Mages, or do the apprentices come from all over?
This might help me plan my characters unimportant past. XD
Also, what are the neighboring communities and land like?
Thanks. 😊

@taffy789
Apprentices come from all over the kingdom. Not all of their families are mages--becoming a mage is an independent choice of the young magician (or their family). Legacies aren't uncommon, though. Type of magic isn't hereditary.

The human kingdom is situated in the grasslands, toward the east of the world as it is known. It's an agricultural society, mostly centered around wheat. There is only one human kingdom. Some small villages can be found outside its borders, but they're few and far between, and often threatened by the creatures that lurk the countryside. The only other civilized community near the human kingdom is the elven kingdom, which is deep within the forests of the north and east. Dwarves, which live in the mountains of the far north, aren't unheard of.

Does that answer your question, or am I missing anything? ^^;

"ARGGHH!" Kira clenched her fist, and summoned a piece of the earth to jut out of the ground, and smack into the training dummy's chest, sending the faceless straw-filled puppet flying through the air.
The dummy fell to the ground with a light "thud" a few feet away.
Panting, Kira decided that was enough training for the moment.
She strolled over to a large Oak, and plopped down beside it's trunk, enjoying the shade.
She pulled a henkerchief out of her tunic, and wiped the sweat from her training off of her brow.
'Wow,' Kira thought tiredly to herself, 'Why must it be so HOT?'
Even with her hair pulled into a messy braid like it usually was during training or practice matches, the mess of brown silk on her head was still sticking to the back of her neck.

(Akward RPing much? XD Takes me forever to get hold off certain characters. >.> )

Selena took hold of the end of a spear. One-thirds of the weapon was lodged in the middle of a stuffed dummy on a wooden pole. She pulled the spear out with a slight grunt. Being able to control certain elements by magic doesn't mean it could always provide protection. She planned to be good at her magic skills just as well as with weapon. She had been prwcticing with swords, spears and arrows foethe past hour. Selena put down the spear in a pile of other weapons and headed deeper into the training grounds, where magic was practiced. She strode down the dirt path, her black hair flowing behind her as she walked. When she arrived, Selena stopped in front of a medium table sized piece or ice. She lifted her arm, making a fist. The ice crackled and thin sharp lines appeared in the block, cracking it in several pieces. She stepped back in surprise. Usually it took her longer and was harder, but she guessed all that practice paid off after all.

Name: Sir John the Braveheart
Gender: Male
Age: 29
Appearance: Bright, sharp blue eyes clash with his suntanned and weather-worn face that usually has a smile underneath his large but clean mass of blond beard. He normally wears light armour, a leather belt and wraps of loincloth dipped in green dye, depending on his thick skin. He lost his left foot to a magical creature that he couldn't kill, so he's a bit slow. Johnny can't weld any weapon very well at all, but he was given the title mage because of his high level of healing. Usually has a small heirloom knife to use for welding or caring for a patient.

(from @skylark)

Personality: Patient, caring and loyal. Tends to mutter to himself as he heals, and when asked about it he normally tells them it's his way of focusing, but people think he's a little crazy in the head. Johnny easily gets carried away, tending to over-emphasize things and dramatize wounds in the worst way possible when it's really quite alright. John has a very bad cockney accent and tells very personal stuff when he drinks.
Status: Mage
Type of Magic: Healing, and moulding a small, substantial amount of earth.
Other:
1) Domestic wild chickadee who follows him 24/7, which John named Connie. Maybe she got a few too many sunflower seeds? Anyways, she tends to sit on his bare head, twittering to the sky.
2) Good friends with Callette. (?)
3) Loves to play his small handmade skin drum, which sounds like a large congo drum.

I love roleplaying. E:

@silver_winged I don't mind the long posts, but I might reply a little slow since I live on the oppisite side of the planet and I usually sleep during the time, when you RP. XDDD I'll try to keep up though.
Here's the intro. I hope it's alright with you.

Light breeze ruffled the green oak leaves, swirling around the plains and making its way towards a sunny meadow. It ruffled a sleeping boy's dark hair and blew on his face. One quiet mumble was heard, before the boy cracked one brown-greenish eye open and looked at the blue sky. He smiled. He was laying in the middle of the small meadow, butterflies flying near him and the breeze swirling around, ruffling the soft green grass. It was such a beautiful sight to wake up to. The boy gazed at the small puffy clouds above for a moment and then sat up adruptly, rubbing the sleep from his eyes and then stretching. He knew all too well that he shouldn've been sleeping at this moment but he didn't care about his responsibilities that much. Now that he had become a master, he was supposed to be honored and treated nicely, so he assumed that noone would dare scold him. Yawning loudly, he stood up and looked around for a moment before walking slowly to the castle. He placed his hands on the back of his head and smiled, eyes fixed on the aquamarine sky. He hoped that nobody had noticed his absence.

Selena smiled to herself. She took a step forward, examing the cracks and the split ice. Picking up the smallest piece, she placed it on a wooden table in a glass cup. Selena waited for the ice to melt in the hot sun, which didn't take very long. But Nevertheless, she stopped and sat in a shady spot nearby, below a statue of mythical beasts. She yawned, and started to doze off before she knew it.

Having sneaked by the guards at the gate, Alexander poked his head from behind a wall, looking around for anybody. If he was caught slacking off, he was done for. Walking out of his hiding place, Alex quickly ran to the statue in front of the main hall, stopping promptly as he noticed a young girl sleeping under it. He scratched his head. What to do? If he woke her up, the girl might report him but on the other hand if he didn't wake her, then she would get in trouble for seeping on the statue. He sighed. Approaching the small form of the maiden, he took her shoulder and shook it slightly.
"Hey, hey, wake up. You'll get into trouble" he quietly said, trying to wake the girl. "Wake up."

Suddenly, Selena slid a dagger from her boots and held it at the arm that shook her shoulder. Looking up, she realized that it was one of the masters. She quickly stood up, while putting th dagger away. "Sorry.", she mumbled quietly. Maybe he'd take sympathy in her and not get her in trouble. She stared down at her boots, which were smudged with dirt. She needed to wash them or clean them off later.

Alex smiled sheepishly.
"Nah, don't apologize. I'm not going to do anything. You were just going to get in trouble." he said in a causal, slighyl bubbly tone and scratched the back of his head awkwardly. He really didn't like being treated as superior. He had to admit, it was nice being honored but he depised people being scared of him. The girl looked like a mage so he assumed that she was one. "Hi! I'm Alex. I really have to say I haven't had the pleasure of meeting you just yet. What is your name?" he asked curtly and smiled again. The girl seemed quite nice.

"Selena Koell.", she said. "I heard you were Griffinmaster.", she added. Selena looked up, taking notice of a small bird that fluttered among the bushy tops of the trees in the nearby forest. As it disappeared into the cover provided by the leaves, she started to wonder what the mission would be. She hoped she would be allowed to go.
