Captain Riren silenced the crowd with an authoritative slam of his spear against the table. The mages had been seated at the long, narrow wooden tables of the dining room. The walls were hung with tapestries depicting the battle between the gods; between the stone walls of the mage castle, legions of creatures of magic would remain in bloody battle for eternity. Sunlight peeked in through the tiny windows, casting tiny splotches of yellow light onto the marble floors."I'm sure you've all heard," the captain began, "about the mission." He raised a broad hand, signaling that they were not to speak. "The fact of the matter is that we've suffered a tragedy."Hauntmaster Bayard left several months ago on a diplomacy mission to the Highland Forests, in negotiation with the dark elves. However, he has been lost to us. The elves report that he is no longer among them; however, the political situation regarding them has been precarious, and it is entirely possible that they are holding him hostage. It is possible that something else has befallen him upon his travel home, but due to the nature of his powers, it is unlikely. We have waited until now to report this in the hopes that he would return, but additional changes encourage our immediate action. -c@fyret1ger @jupiter_hollow @taffy789 @bunnyshadow @skylark

"The forests are displaying odd traits that would suggest mobilization of the dark elves. We suspect that their army may be preparing a direct attack upon our kingdom, and if that is the case, those we send must be able to defend themselves."The purpose of the mission is twofold. The first is the rescue of Hauntmaster Bayard. The second is to prevent war from reaching the borders of our kingdom. This may mean peaceful negotiations, or preemptive fighting." The captain folded his hands behind his back and stared down upon them sternly. "I would go myself, but if war does reach us, I must be here in defense of the king. That is why I send those of the next rank in my stead. Gryphonmaster, Phoenixmaster, Rocmaster; you are the captains of this mission."The rest of you have been selected by your superiors for service in this mission. You either show great skill or a necessity for . . . field experience, shall we say. Please stand as you are called." He paused a moment to clear his throat with a booming harrumph. "Lady Kira Rosewood. Lady Selena Koell. Sir John the Braveheart. Apprentice Caelan Loakree. Apprentice Tagara Flynn. If any of you wish to reject this mission, please speak now." The tone of his voice and the set of his face discouraged any such reaction.@duchess @wolfmilk((OoC note in next post, please read that as well.))

Everything that's going on will be made more clear as the roleplay goes on. Don't panic if you don't completely understand. You're not supposed to. You can ask in character what's going on and get some information, but they'll only learn what has happened up until now. The rest of the plot will unfold as the roleplay goes on. ;D

As he listened intently to Captain Riren's instructions, Dylan strummed his fingers against the wooden table but abruptly stopped at the mention of him. The rest of the speech faded away as he struggled to digest what had been said. He was going to be captain?! But it was reasonable to be captain, he thought to himself. After all, he was the one with experience. His eyes briefly flickered to the Gryphonmaster and Rocmaster and wondered what their reactions would be.His confusion was then overwhelmed with delight at the prospect of finally going to a mission. His heart pumped rapidly with excitement and an arrogant smile spread across his face.

Johnny was idling away on his chair when Ririen was speaking. He secretly thought that the captain used too many words. When his named was called, he slowly turned towards him as he stood up. Why would the captain send him, a inefficient warrior, on a mission? This had to have some kind of drawback or something. Shaking his head as if to clear it, John wondered if they were being pranked. This didn't sound like it though... Slowly digesting the information in his head, something clicked as if a lightbulb lit up. Ririen was worried! "Ahh! ...hmm." He mumbled to himself as he raised an eyebrow to the captain. Then this is serious, this mission, if Ririen to send so many masters. Sighing quietly, John groaned inwardly as they would have to trek across untouched nature to get to the elves. This was his last however long relaxation time to get in before they started travelling, fast.

Tagara paid rapt attention while Captain Riren spoke. One of the masters was missing? Dark elves were preparing for war! Of course they had to stop them! What did she know about the dark elves? She had to check her journal when she returned to her quarters. The girl carried a great deal of information about other races in that book, and it could certainly help if she was chosen. The captain clearing his throat brought her back to the present. The girl sat back listening to names and gasped when she heard her own. Even though she wanted this mission, she didn't expect to get it. She was one of the youngest apprentices and could barely use a weapon. Well someone thought she could do this and she wouldn't let them down! As she stood to attention, and discreetly glanced over the rest of the group, Tagara wondered which of her superiors suggested her and why.

Caelan watched dully as the Captain spoke, his gaze focused yet blank. He wasn't paying attention to the words so much as the gestures. It was interesting to watch the Captain's severe face contort itself into so many expressions, and it was equally interesting to watch the strangely graceful movements of his calloused hands. Caelan supposed it came from years of training. He blinking in surprise as his name was called. Oh dear. Caelan knew he hadn't been paying much attention, and was worried that he was going to be caught out for being an idiot with no knowledge of anything. He wondered faintly why he had been called. He was reasonably good with a bow, but besides that he wasn't exactly skilled - especially in the magic department. He rose to his feet silently, and kept his expression calm. He would figure out what was happening later. His gaze flickered uncertainly over the people he would be going with - he didn't know any of them. He hoped they were kind.
