Hey friends! So ya girl is getting married in like 5 months (yay) and I'm still debating with my fiancé about where we should spend our honeymoon next year! Would love to hear from yall about your favorite places on this entire planet 😊. We are adventurous, love to be in nature, eat good food, and prefer to go somewhere outside of US/Canada/Mexico/Carribean (been there, done that). We have thrown around these places:

Scotland/Ireland
Korea
Japan
Spain/Portugal

@lexicon
Congratulations on your engagement, I hope it is an absolutely magical day ❤️

As someone who just returned from Japan... Japan. It's a much cheaper holiday than you would think and there are ways to make it cheaper (capsule hotels, convenience centre food for some quick examples). The train system is very good when you know what you're doing but if you are able to get a Suica card that essentially makes it the easiest except for the bullet trains and very specific locations in which other transportation tickets may be cheaper.

No matter what, I strongly recommend convenience centre food as it is actually good food for a very decent price but overall food in Japan is very decently priced unless you hit the expensive places and even then, it'll be cheaper than what you would pay at home.

If you do decide Japan, I strongly recommend watching all the videos about social etiquette and strongly recommend following how the locals are doing things. I recommend learning basics phrases of the language to help communicate and using Google Lens and Translate are life savers.

@mastergemma

Thank you so much!!!❤️❤️❤️. It will be, we are eloping to Vegas xD

Japan was the first place I threw out because it's a dream of mine to go there! It is 100% on our list of places to visit even if it's not this time! (The more I think about it, it might be more fun with friends?)

Omg I watch SO MANY Japan travel videos and am completely enraptured by the culture. Plus, sushi/Japanese is my all time favorite food. I've watched several "spend all day eating at 7/11" and "trying all vending machines for a day" and am SO EXCITED. I've heard about canned strawberry bread and my body is ready. I've also watched so much anime in my youth I feel like I got the basics down xD

May I ask what parts you visited and what the vibes were? Like city, countryside, island, etc. ^^

Im from the capital (Lisbon) and of course, I would advise you to go there! There are beaches just 20 minutes away and you can find really nice places everywhere ❤️

@fainne_24

Thank you ^^ ❤️

You know Portugal wasn't on my radar until recently when I saw it on The Bachelor (a trashy reality TV dating show if you're not familiar lol). They went there and I was absolutely blown away by how beautiful it looked!!

What's your favorite time of year?
Are there any specific places you would recommend seeing?

I appreciate your response 😊

@lexicon CONGRATS!! ❤️
As someone who's been to all those locations, I suggest Japan or Spain/Portugal! Japan is so much cheaper and there's a LOT to do, you'll never get bored! (I prefer going in the early Springtime!)

As for Spain/Portugal, I would hop between Madrid->Barcelona for Spain, and Lisbon or Porto could be fun for Portugal! When I toured Europe, Portugal was actually my favourite destination 😊 (Went in the Fall)

Congratulations!!! ❤️ I am so happy for you, that is wonderful. I hope your life together is filled with laughter and you fall deeper in love every day ^^

It is my lifelong dream to go to Europe, specifically England/Ireland/Scotland. I've never been personally but I've heard Scotland has just gorgeous countrysides. I would love to live vicariously through you xD

@nocturne
Thank you!!!❤️ I so appreciate all the tips. I would love to get on your level someday and go on a European tour ahhh the literal ~dream~

Fall is my favorite season and we are getting married in October (on our 10-year anniversary) ^^

@jlya
Thank you so much friend, that means a lot ;-; ❤️. Same!! We actually looked into Scotland recently through Costco travel and there is the option to stay in a CASTLE on a LOCH and then jet over to Ireland to spend some time in the countryside. That sound absolutely magical to me. I will definitely update on where we end up going! c:

 @lexicon Im glad Portugal made your list 😃

It depends on what do you like and want! Do you want historical places, or forest, country side, beach? Or gastronomy, wine or other stuff?

I think all seasons are great. If you dont like too much warmth dont go on the summer, but for me its my favorite time and I love the temperature and going to the beach 😊

Oh gosh all of that sounds lovely!! We love nature and food xD. I would love to hear your top 3 places in any of those categories, we really are open to anything 😊

Good to know! I come from a very warm climate near the beach so it might be nice to have it be a little cooler so we were thinking spring/start of summer?

@lexicon awww congratulations on your engagement!

I'm throwing another vote in for Scotland (a CASTLE woah), and if you happen to be passing through or staying near Falkirk I'd recommend a visit to The Kelpies, especially if you or your partner are interested in sculptures (or just horses). There's pictures of them online but they're amazing to see in person if you have time (:

@amethyst_elf448
Thank you so much❤️
Ooh I haven't looked much into activities yet but The Kelpies look so much beautiful! I believe if we go the Scotland route we'll have access to a car and be able to drive around the countryside! I'll see how close it is c:

@lexicon sorry for the late reply!

Historical places: You find many in Lisbon (Castelo de Sao Jorge, Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, Torre de Belém, Terreiro do Paco, the traditional neighbourhoods of Alfama, Mouraria, etc.); a lot all over the country, I have a favourite one that almost no one knows, its called Citânia de Briteiros in Guimarães (an old celt and roman settlement in the middle of the mountains). You have Castelo de Almourol, a castle in the middle of Tagus river in the center of Portugal. Porto is also full of historical places, and Coimbra is known for the oldest universities and strong academic tradition!

Forest: Close to Lisbon you have Sintra and Arrábida, both near to the sea. In Sintra you have Pena Palace and the Mourish Castle, in Arrábida is mostly nature but it has a beach that was voted one of the best in Europe I think (Beach of Arrábida).

Country side: Either Alentejo (Évora for example has a roman temple similar to the ones in Athens, or a bone chapel - yes, a chapel build from human bones, creepy ahah), and a lot of plain fields, with a dry climate, very warm on the summer; the North of Portugal (for example Minho, Arcos de Valdevez, Gerês) has beautiful mountain landscapes and not so warm, with more green there.

Gastronomy: My favourite food is baby pig (leitão) I know it sounds wrong but trust me, its a traditional dish from Mealhada worth trying. You also have the famous fish bacalhau, cozido à portuguesa, francesinha (in Porto). For entry/small dishes you should try rissol, croquete, pastel de bacalhau! And for dessert you must eat pastel de nata, chocolate salami, many pastries!

Wine: Try the Porto wine, its sweet and unique! There is also Madeira wine (Madeira is one of the islands in Portugal, but that's a different visit, I have never been to the islands of Madeira and Azores but they have amazing places and I plan to visit one day 😊 )

I think end of spring beginning of summer is a good time, not to warm, but warm enough in case you want to swim on the beach if you feel like it 😊 though I must say the water is quite cold!
Then you have the south of Portugal, Algarve, mostly known by the beaches, more touristic, but very nice and with warm water 😊

Im sorry for such a big reply, I can't help it, I really love Portugal 😊 Im currently living in Sweden and miss Portugal like crazy! 😊

No worries we have plenty of time to make this decision!! I appreciate your response❤️

Ahhhh! Thank you so much for such a thoughtful and detailed list, this is exactly what I was looking for!! Even if we don't end up going for our Honeymoon, Portugal just shot up to top places I would like to visit o:

Sweden sounds lovely as well! What do miss the most?

Our goal is to visit a new continent for each year we are married so 7 years to see all 7 continents! Manageable no? ^^

@lexicon I'm also late, but I've heard amazing things about Ireland and Japan! I know several people who have gone to Japan and LOVED it- a word of caution from my grandparents, there are some places that can get super crowded, ESPECIALLY the airport according to them, but they absolutely loved their trip otherwise!

As for Ireland, both my parents and one of my best friends went to Ireland last year, and they all came back saying it was absolutely gorgeous! (And there's sheep, which is always a bonus in my book! ❤️)

Congrats on the future wedding! Wishing you the best of love and luck!

@provo7demons Thank you so much!!❤️ Not late at all, we got the rest of the year to decide! :'). Ah I absolutely love sheep, Ireland seems more idyllic for a chill vacation vs. I would want to do everything all at once in Japan lol! Thanks for sharing c:

@s6and Omg yes!! Over a day of flying and $2k+ plane tickets though...oof. But on the plus side, those all-inclusive resorts?? A dream honestly. It's definitely on the list to go to eventually!
