It's impossible to see less than three creatures in the Adoption Center, actually. It is programmed to not show up if there are two or one creatures in there.It's not really all that rare to find abandoned creatures, though it is definitely not as used of a feature nowadays.

Welcome to the site đ What Sanibel and Plushie said is right on the mark, some creatures are from the Cash Shop Park and you can buy a Calla from the SAR. You can also get 3 alien creatures from the asteroid, but getting a creature from there is really rare (only gotten one so far myself).

You cant get em all form cave so you need to collect Egg Coins, Cave Cash or other worthy creatures to get the one you want. You can also chat on the blog, talk on the forums and explore the site. @karamelSorry. I wasn't meaning what is there to do with your pets, but what is there to do with the site other than gathering the Eggs. It just seems like that's the only thing to do...Then you just wait for them to level. It sounds like it would get old really fast.
