Male vs. Female Creatures

in Site Feedback & Ideas

Is this a good idea?

Deleted • 24 September 2015 at 12:48 PM

I'm not sure if this idea has been explored yet, but I think for some creatures (in the future), there should be minor differences between male and female creatures. For example, a male could have a more colorful body than a female. I think this would make finding creatures more interesting, especially if one is harder to find than another, and would give male and female creatures more use than just being designated that.

@decensus I support this idea. For instance all the lion creatures, like the Koleda or Frion have manes... Which doesn't make sense in my opinion. Only male lions have manes. Or the deer like creatures...Only the males should have antlers (the only exception would be for the raindeer based ones, where both genders have antlers).

@ida92
Exactly! And there's some fairy type creatures that only look like females. I think it might be a little more artistic work to add these differences in, but I think it would be worth it.

@decensus
This would actually be cool, it would be some work for the artists but it would be worth it i hope

@decensus I totally agree. I know that the genders don't actually doo anything, baceuse you can't breed creatures (which I support), but I still think that implementing dimorphism would be a very good thing.

@ami_utsukushii

I don't even think it would be as much work for the artists as we'd think (although since I myself am not an artist, I can't say for sure).

Take the gerat for example, (sorry for enforcing the gender binary but this is the first thing I could think of). The space between the rocks is blue, right? Well what if that was for the males only. The females could be pink instead, which only requires a little tweaking in photoshop.

Maybe differences might not even be present in the first few stages, such as a deer inspired animal looking the same in the first couple of stages, but in the adult stage, one has antlers and one doesn't.

If I could get an artists opinion on this though, that would be great!

@decensus Maybe we should also ping some mods for this? Since it also their merit what the creatures look like. 😊

@decensus i like this idea!

I added a poll. If you have a moment, I would love everyone's opinion!

This would make it interesting! Kind of like Pokemon :'D

I also want genderless creatures cause sometimes I think that the brios is genderless...like magnemite...

@iceiceice

I think genderless creatures is a great idea! Although maybe there could still be some slight differences, like instead of having a difference between male and female colors, genderless creatures could come in a rainbow of different colors, some harder to find than others!

@decensus
It'd be cool, but I think it'd mainly be achievable for newer creatures 😊 Since the artstyle now is different compared to before I'm not sure users would want creatures to be completely revamped 😋

@spell

Yeah that's what I was thinking. It would probably be pretty annoying for everyone, artists and users

"Not a lot of work"

...yeah its gonna be A LOT of work. First young gonna have to redo the design's of 400+ creatures with all there stages like @spell said above the art styles are a bit different so that would be frustrating to do. Then your gonna have to recode the whole gender thing to make all those 400+ creatures have different looks if there genders are different. Then your gonna change the 400+ pages of the archives to show both the genders.

How bout instead of changing EVERYTHING there are certain creatures that both genders look different? Those would be cool to collect in my opinion. Just as a suggestion.

@queens
I never said it wouldn't be a lot of work. I said it would be work. And i didn't think @decensus meant every single creature already made, because a lot of people would be unhappy if their creature appearances all up and changed, I was assuming she meant newer creatures coming out and a small select few, not every single one ever made.

@queens
Ohs its ok, but yeah she did say newer creatures though, it would be tons of work to change every creature's stages so it'd just be a few from the past and in the future.

Deleted • 26 September 2015 at 10:16 PM

@queens

Yeah sorry, I should've made it absolutely clear that I was only considering doing the new ones, as well as having some creatures only start to show differences in later stages. Also, I didn't even think of the archives so thanks for bringing that point up!

I think it would be cool to have a creature like the Laniwon (cardinal) where the male is the signature bright red, while the female is its brown-red. Same with a mallard duck or sparrow (sorry for all the bird examples haha). It wouldn't work for every creature, but it'd be cool for animals where gender does play a role in appearance.

Deleted • 30 September 2015 at 3:54 PM

@metaphor

I don't think it has to apply just to animals where their appearance normally matters. Especially for creatures that don't have animal counterparts. Although it definitely shouldn't be applied to every single creature, I think even just making a creature made out of candy have differences would be cool.

@decensus Yes! I like the idea, but it should only be for new creatures (not all of them but some) so that it won't take forever, but I like the idea a lot 😊
