"No. They took my phone when we-"

A shot rang out suddenly. James barely had time to register what happened when the soldier who had been guiding them fell to the ground.

Looking for the source of the shot, he was surprised to see...

"Kita?"

"The plane's this way." She said, putting the pistol back into the holster. "That guy got out and snuck into the plane to call for backup on the radio. We need to move."

James walked over to check on the soldier, but it soon became very clear that he could not help him.

"Kita... he..."

"We need to leave. Now." She said dismissively, turning around and walking away.

"Hmph." Vladan said thoughtfully. It was the first man he had seen her kill since she had tried stealing the backpack from him. It felt strange, realizing that she had been the one behind the shot.

"Glad that you finished the job for me, darling." He called out in a singsong voice meant to annoy James. Through Vladan's confident words, he felt slightly...uncomfortable at how cold she had reacted to James. Something was definitely off about her.

Whatever it was, he definitely didn't like it. Ruthless didn't fit what he knew about her, and it made Vladan feel as if he now had someone to compete with for the title of 'Most Merciless'.

He headed after Kita at a quick pace.

James followed behind. If Vladan noticed Kita's strange behaviour, he didn't say anything. James was incredibly unsettled... Even back when they were involved in the gang, she had never displayed such cruelty... no warning... nothing.

Something was definitely wrong...

They approached the plane and spotted Vladan's men leaning up against it, obviously bored. James couldn't help but notice the way that they watched Kita pass. One of them was sporting a broken arm that he definitely didn't have before...

Could Kita have done that?

Vladan stepped by his men, greeting them with a knowing smirk that said 'You thought you'd seen the last of me hadn't you?'. He moved for the steps that led inside the plane when he caught sight of the man with the broken arm. Vladan stopped walking, before leaning in and poking the man in the arm.

"What happened here?" Vladan asked, ignoring the guy's grunt that resulted from Vladan's sharp jab. The enabled didn't seem too keen on answering, so he turned towards the other 2.

"No one gets on my plane until my question is answered." He said impatiently with crossed arms.

The man pointed towards Kita, who was climbing the steps onto the plane and had her back to them.

"She's savage... all I said was that maybe you got caught and she grabbed my arm and slammed it into the side of the plane... Didn't even see her coming..." he said quietly, obviously not wanting her to hear. "She had a wild look in her eyes... like an animal... She told us that you would come and that the next person to even suggest otherwise would get two broken arms... I think she thought we were suggesting we leave without you... She's insane... Where on earth did you find that girl...?"

James felt a shiver go down his spine. That was very much unlike her... What was going on?

Vladan was speechless. He had suspected it was Kita from the way they had glanced at her that warily. Vladan had been ready to confront her about keeping her hands off his property, but the reason she did it threw him off guard completely.

"She..." Vladan trailed off, unsure of what to say. He pulled at the collar of his uniform, then cleared his throat. Vladan knew he should have been angry that Kita had laid hands on his soldiers, but something inside him felt a little whimsical that she would get this aggressive to make sure they wouldn't have left without him.

He feigned indifference.

"I'll talk to her." He said. "Let's head on in, I'm sure that Sochuv's men have already been sent out for us." Vladan walked past his soldiers and James on the way inside the plane.

He made a point to push past James, but the slight glance he gave the healer proved his suspicions that James wasn't too fond of Kita's behavior.

Maybe this was his chance to finally destroy their crumbling relationship.

Ordinarily, James would have been bothered by Vladan pushing him, but he was distracted thinking of Kita's strange behaviour.

He climbed onboard after Vladan, grabbing a seat across from Kita. He didn't feel entirely comfortable being next to her... She barely acknowledged him as he took his seat.

Something was definitely going on...

Vladan sat with the 3 enabled soldiers. For the first hour or so of the flight, he discussed what happened in Russia with the men. How it was like when they first arrived, how things had quickly gone south, and other details like information about the base that they may need later on.

It wasn't long until he noticed the men losing focus. Normally, he would have been angry at their lack of concentration, but considering what they had just been through, Vladan let it slide. The man noticed the enabled with the broken arm shifting uncomfortably, and he pursed his lips.

"James?" Vladan called out, unsure if the man was awake or not. "Could you fix Coley's arm?" Though it was worded like a question, it was more a command then anything.

James nodded, getting up from his seat and sitting next to the man, placing his hand on his arm.

Immediately, he could tell that the break was a lot more complex than what he originally thought. It wasn't just a simple break... the bone was in several pieces... no wonder he was so uncomfortable...

James reassembled the bone as carefully as possible, but he could tell that it was causing the man a great deal of pain. Kita obviously wasn't holding back at all...

He looked up at Vladan, a look of extreme concern on his face.

Vladan averted his gaze away from James, and instead stepped past the lot of them. He made his way towards Kita, before sitting himself down besides her. He turned his body so that he was facing her openly.

"You want to tell me why you killed that soldier?" Vladan asked. He cocked his head to the right curiously. "You were the one that argued so heavily for me to spare his life."

Kita was silent for a moment before speaking.

"He was a threat." She said simply, gazing out the window. "Surely you of all people understand that. We couldn't risk him reaching the others... leading them right to us..."

There was no hint of regret in her voice... no hesitation in her words.

"I let my emotions get in the way before... it was reckless of me to protect him then... we could have been killed..."

Vladan laughed haughtily. "I was beginning to think you didn't understand that the world around us..." He trailed off, making a grand gesture as he did so. "Is much harsher than those of regular people. For us, it's kill or be killed. You let your heart get in the way and-" Vladan snapped his fingers. "You're dead."

Though those were the words coming out of his mouth, he knew that they were straight up lies. Many times had Vladan been screwed over because of his emotions--whether it be his temper or his compassion.

"I like this." Vladan said. But did he really? Her frigidness was strange, but he forced himself to remain indifferent throughout their exchange. Vladan didn't know if it was so he wouldn't look weak besides this 'new' Kita or if it was to convince himself that that was how he wanted to live his life.

"Maybe now that I have you around, I won't have to be the one disciplining my soldiers." Vladan said with a low chuckle. He leaned in closer to her, so that their arms were touching.

Kita didn't move away from the touch.

"I'm not your pet, Vladan. Discipline your own men." She said, still looking out the window. "You're mistaking necessity for eagerness. I killed him because he was a threat. That was it."

James watched the two, uncomfortable with their closeness. He wanted to believe that it was just Kita's increasingly unusual shift in behaviour, but maybe this was something else...

Vladan scoffed, before moving his arm away. He made to pick at the threads of his sleeves. "A little feisty aren't you today?" He said with a wide grin. He stared at the back of her head. The man wanted to read her so badly, but knew he couldn't with her turned away like that.

"Irritated at the knife wound, I presume?" The mention of the knife suddenly brought back an entire array of questions he had forgotten earlier on.

"What happened back there?" He asked. "Your mimicry failed."

"My left arm is unaffected by my mimic power... It was just bad luck." She said simply. "I didn't expect it, and you couldn't have either."

She was tracing the intricate web of scars on her arm, running her fingertips up and down the lines as if trying to memorize the pattern. There was a larger scar there too, from the knife. Her fingers seemed to rest on that patch of skin slightly longer, before continuing their unusual trajectory.

"I've endured worse... it simply caught me off guard is all..."

Vladan didn't notice that it had scarred. A part of him actually felt bad, considering how he himself had to live with a scar--and he absolutely hated it. He didn't say anything when he reached over and gently touched her arm where he had hit her. His voice didn't match his movements at all.

"You should have told me." He said coldly.

Again, Kita did not move away.

"I did. I told you this arm was cut off from my mimicry ability." She said. "But even I wasn't thinking about that. What's done is done."

She sighed, tapping her wrist absent-mindedly as she gazed at an endless sea of clouds.

"It's useless to dwell on trivial things like that."

"Did you?" He questioned thoughtfully. Vladan was almost certain that she didn't. He had remembered asking her about the tattoo and then the subject changing to James.

He stood now. "I'll give room back to your precious little boyfriend." Vladan said. "The two of you have lots to catch up on, I'm sure."

James watched as Vladan got up, and moved past him to sit next to Kita. Now was as good a time as any...

"Kita... What is going on...? You're acting strange."

"I'm just a little out of sorts. It's nothing." She said, glancing at him briefly. "A lot has happened lately. I'm just processing."

"You killed that guy, Kita."

"I've killed before, James."

"Not like that... Back then... it was always self-defense, or defending one of us... and you were always broken up about it after..." he said. "That was just... cold..."

The other two instances of her taking a life were both accidental and while protecting the others... She had so little control over her power back then... but this...

"Kita... I don't know what's going on, but you're..."

"Scaring you?" She asked nonchalantly. "James, this is not a gang fight... it's a war. The rules are different."

James didn't like the tone of her voice... it was so different from what he was used to... there was something malicious about it... something he didn't like...

Vladan sunk down into his seat. Even though the heat was on in the private plane, he still found himself shivering. He found himself dozing off to sleep many times, but could never actually fall asleep. The 3 enabled on the plane(excluding James and Kita) were knocked out cold.

Even from down the aisle, Vladan could make out the stress lines and exhaustion from their sleeping faces. Maybe it was time that he give them a much needed break. Giving them time off also meant he needed to find replacements. That meant giving the new recruits training, as well as making sure that they are in line with Vladan's rules.

Sure Vladan was mean, rude and power hungry--but he also knew that he needed to treat his men right so they give him back the faith and loyalty he deserved.

He placed his head in his hands, rubbing his forehead stressfully.

James hadn't realized he'd fallen asleep until he was woken by the pilot saying they'd landed. Kita had seemingly been awake the whole time, an expression of intense disinterest on her face.

"So what is the plan, Vladan?" He asked, incredibly uncomfortable around this new, unsettling version of Kita.

Vladan knocked his fist against the top of the plane until everybody was awake. He cleared his throat before making his announcement.

"I'm making the executive decision that everyone stay at my place tonight." He said bluntly. "I am not in the mood to ferry everyone home, and I want to speak to you all in the morning."

With those words, he stepped off the plane. He was immediately greeted by 2 luxury cars. "Kita you're taking the other one..." he trailed off and arched a brow as he threw a set of keys to her. "And please don't ruin it this time."

Kita nodded, climbing into the front of one of the two cars. Had he not been so concerned about Kita, he might have laughed as all of the other three immediately piled into the opposite vehicle.

He got in on the passenger's side, and Kita began driving to Vladan's place. She didn't say anything the entire way there and neither did James.

It was going to be a long car ride.

"I don't like her." Coley said from the passenger's seat.

Vladan had remained quiet for the majority of the ride, but Coley's words certainly made him break the silence. "No one asked for your opinion." Vladan stated.

"She's something else." One of the enabled sitting in the back added. "I don't know why a guy like James would be with a wild card like that." She said.

"You don't know her." Vladan said, eyes flashing in annoyance.

"She's quiet unusual." The last of the 3 added.

Vladan swerved around the corner. "All of you settle down before I kill everyone." He said, glancing into the rear view mirror at the two in the backseat.

The familiar shape of his home loomed ahead, and he waited impatiently as the gate opened up. He headed up the driveway, parking lazily in the front of the house. The cold wind snapped angrily at the stolen uniform he was still wearing.

Vladan had almost forgotten he had dogs. When he opened the door, they jumped, barking obnoxiously at the return of their master. He shooed them away as he waved everybody in.

"Everyone pick a room." He said. "No opening closed doors, and no touching things that look like they shouldn't be touched. If anything that belongs to me bites you, take it like a man and don't bite back. I don't tolerate anybody messing with my pets."

"If you're hungry, make yourself something to eat. If you have something important to tell me, wait until the morning, I'm sure you're all aware I hate being disturbed."

James sighed as he fell onto the bed in one of the rooms. He couldn't seem to fall asleep though... not with all the thoughts racing through his mind.

Kita wasn't the kind of person to shoot a man with his back turned and who was no immediate danger to her or anyone else, much less aiming to kill...

She was also not the kind of person to break someone's arm without being directly provoked... Yes, she had a temper, but she would be more likely to resort to verbal aggression long before physical violence...

And her cold demeanour... that was just odd... It was as if she were just an empty shell... it was... disturbing...

He sat awake for hours wondering what went wrong before his body gave in and he fell into a very restless sleep...

Vladan was still awake long after everyone else had gone to bed or headed to their rooms. The automatic lights had flickered off in most, if not all of the mansion save for the kitchen where Vladan currently resided.

The sharp clink of a glass against a bottle echoed around the kitchen. Though the liquor was strong and bitter, it felt sweet to him. He wasn't sure if it was from not having a taste for several days, or if he was just hungry enough to fill his stomach.

His body has grown warm from the drinks. He cried out sharply at the feel of something warm and strange against his leg, but exhaled lightly when he recognized the white mane.

"Missed me, didn't you?" He said with a chuckle as he scratched Odilia behind the ear.

You've been awfully quiet... You of all people should have something to say about all this...

It was as disappointing usual to get no response. If he didn't feel the lingering presence in the back of his mind, he might have been concerned. It was there... just silent.

You were a better companion last time... More... Lively... How long are you going to continue to give me the silent treatment?

Still no response. He would be lying if he said it didn't irk him slightly to be talking to himself...

How long do you think it will take before they turn on each other? That is the goal, after all. They are so volatile now... all it would take is a little push...

There was a slight reaction that time... A pitiful sadness... Despair... It was enough for him.

I will enjoy this greatly.

"Drinking too much makes you start thinking too much." Vladan muttered to himself. Looking at Odilia made him cringe a little. He moved the glass to his lips, hand holding the glass to tightly it began shaking in his grip. "You actually ate him, huh?" He said to Odilia.

The animal glanced at him warily, and Vladan grit his teeth. He was starting to wish he spared the bodies. Ero deserved a proper burial.

Vladan shook his head, slamming the glass on the table as he did so. The crystal held it's shape for a split second before shattering across the table. The smell of alcohol permeated the air as the liquor began dripping off the table.

"That was Puppet, not Ero." He muttered angrily to himself. Vladan turned, searching for the comfort of Odilia, but looked just in time to see the animal quickly leaving the room.

--

Vladan picked up one of the mewling lion cubs. It opened it's tiny jaws to reveal a set of tiny teeth. "I like this one." He said aloud thoughtfully. The cub was one of the bigger of the lots, and the breeder had told Vladan that it was always picking on it's siblings.

He turned to see Ero swoop a mewling creature into the air. "Get this one, Vladan," Ero said.

Vladan dropped the cub back into it's area, before heading over. "A white lion? You don't see many of those anymore." Vladan muttered.

"The breeder told me they usually don't sell species this rare, but they found this one in the wild. Abandoned, probably because she's so small."

"Ah..." Vladan trailed off. He waved over the seller. "I'll take this one." He said decisively, much to Ero's surprise.

"You dislike anything that isn't perfect." Ero said.

Vladan didn't deny it. "Kirah would have liked it." He admitted. He glanced over to Ero to see him purse his lips. "What's wrong?"

"Nothing."

--

He snapped back into reality when he felt the alcohol dripping onto his clothing. Vladan scooted backwards, before moving across the table to a different seat. He took out a new glass, before filling it.

He should have known...the hints were all there. Vladan wondered how things would have gone if he hadn't rejected Ero.

Would he have become Puppet?

--

Vladan almost didn't recognize him. The shaved sides of his head lined the long blonde streak of hair he had. Though he still had those striking emerald eyes, there was a cruelty in them he had never seen before. Darker colored skins surrounded his jaw and lips...burn scars.

"Is that you...Ero?"

He didn't expect Ero to attack. Vladan was shoved into the wall, and the two of them were so close they could have touched foreheads if either of them moved an centimeter.

Eye Contact, but Ero spoke first--and Vladan rendered powerless.

"Ero is gone. I'm Puppet." Vladan felt his lips moving, but he knew it wasn't coming from Ero. It was from himself, but it was Ero's response.

Vladan tried speaking, but he couldn't.

"You're coming with me." Puppet said through Vladan's mouth.

--

Vladan shivered. Flashbacks to a burning warehouse and the time spent in and out of consciousness.

He smashed the second glass against the wall.

Kita barely dodged the glass as she walked through the door.

"Again?" She said, her voice the same cold tone as it had been since she woke up in the medical wing. "You really have let yourself go, Vladan."

She sat next to him, grabbing the bottle away, though not making eye contact once.

"It really doesn't become you... No wonder people think you're losing your touch..." she said, emptying the very little liquid left in the bottle onto the floor. "You know I don't like it when you drink."

No wonder people think you're losing your touch...

Her words hurt more than they should have. At first he felt anger at what he thought was the most condescending statement she had ever said to him, then denial and after that--sadness and realization. Maybe she was right.

He had considered quitting, and managed to stop for around a week or two before he gave up and started again. 'Quitting is for losers' he had told himself. 'And I never lose.' Other times, he had convinced himself that he could quit whenever he wanted, but just didn't want to.

Vladan gave out a short laugh at the sight of Kita pouring the contents of the bottle onto the floor. "That's what you did the first day we met." He said with a small grin. "You better be a good little girl and clean that up."

"And since when did I care about what you like and didn''t like?" He asked rhetorically.
