Announcing A Trial Run Of Cash Shop Rereleases

October 23, 2020 at 1:00 PM

A Letter To Our Community

For a while now, it has been well-known in the Egg Cave community that many of the site's oldest creatures are virtually unobtainable due to their low supply and consequently unaffordable prices. Many of the site's oldest creatures are often the rarest and they're locked away on accounts that are now inactive or, if the account is still active, will never be traded or auctioned.

When we originally introduced the concept of "Cash Shop Monthlies" years ago, it was shortsighted of us to promise to retire these creatures forever. By promising to retire these creatures forever, Egg Cave is at risk of becoming more of a museum of shiny, unobtainable creatures rather than a living, breathing site that's fun and based on working hard for the creatures you love and want to collect.

The idea of rereleasing creatures has been frequently discussed over the last several years. In years past, it has been met with opposition due to fears that rereleasing creatures would lead to an inevitable collapse in values. While it is a basic economic principle that increased supply will slow the rate of an increase in value or cause it to drop, we do not believe that rereleases have to happen in a way that cause values to collapse. In fact, values cannot "collapse" when there was always a price floor of 500 CC to begin with. With rereleases, the floor will be even higher.

In recent months, players have begun discussing the idea of rereleases again but with more positivity and viewing the idea more favorably. We've been pleased to see this and want to engage with the community. That's why today we're announcing a 6-month trial run for rereleasing creatures on Egg Cave. Worried or wonder what "trial run" means? Please continue reading, as these rereleases will be governed by a lot of strict rules.

Increase Supply But Protect Values

Our main goal of rereleasing Cash Shop creatures is to increase their supply but implement strict rules that Team Egg Cave adheres to protect their values. Here's the rundown of what we're proposing and how rereleases would work:

  • Protect value: Rereleased species have a beginning price at 1000 CC or higher depending on their Population Rank (a creature that's lower on the Population Rank sells for higher). They are never less than 1000 CC.
  • Protect value: Cap on the number rereleased. A species population can only be doubled at most. For example, if there are 50 living creatures of a species that's going to be rereleased, a maximum of 100 could be rereleased and no more. Team Egg Cave may choose to set this lower to protect values. Once the limit is reached, the creature is "sold out" in the Cash Shop.
  • Protect value: A species cannot be rereleased two years in a row
  • Rereleases occur on a monthly timetable, just like monthlies
  • Only 2-3 species can be rereleased per month
  • A species can only be rereleased in and during the month that it was originally available (a November monthly could only ever be rereleased in the month of November, maintaining the concept of a monthly)
  • Species selected for rereleases will be announced at least one month in advance

We are proposing a 6-month trial run for these rereleases from November 2020 to April 2021. During April 2021, we will gather feedback and vote as a community if you would like to see rereleases continue (as is or with changes) or be stopped altogether. If we do not have greater than 50% support from the community for creature rereleases, they will be terminated and halted.

Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't know voicing your OPINION on something is considered RUDE. Sure, some people are dripping in money to "have no problems with the price", maybe think a little about those who can't afford to throw money on a game that they would love playing in???

pwuffy • 24 Oct 2020, 12:12 AM

yup its important to consider what @magenta said, even if you cant afford the 1000CC upfront, there will be more of these creatures in circulation which is *the point*, so you will be able to get these creatures more easily via trading and the economy will be stimulated 😊

sungrave • 24 Oct 2020, 12:26 AM

Oh,personally I can't afford buying CC & have limited time to gain EC so to me the price is a little wild BUT I'm all up for the idea& even if won't buy any anytime soon there'll b more creatures& more chance to get some by trading!& the heads up is very kind, gives time to prep!

sungrave • 24 Oct 2020, 12:26 AM

I'm already biting my lips at the thought of how much the older CC critters gonna cost if the not too old ones start at 1000 but I'm really excited for them! I support the idea wholeheartedly and hope the test run will be successful ❤️ Thank you!!!

magenta • 24 Oct 2020, 1:11 AM

@pwuffy thanks for the add-on! thats true, and honestly 1000cc is already a good starting point, they couldve done 2000cc or even higher and people would still buy LOL especially with how much they actually cost if u purchase from a user (more than 6kcc) -

magenta • 24 Oct 2020, 1:13 AM

- dont know why people expect it to be free because they arent free even if they put the original 500cc price 😋 yes f2p but these are cashshop creatures after all and eggcave needs to make money to run the site for free , theres also options like saving up ec to trade for cc-

magenta • 24 Oct 2020, 1:14 AM

-which is what ive been doing recently too and i have about 3 mill ec in my bank already so yes there's options

ethereality • 24 Oct 2020, 1:17 AM

Honestly yes, people definitely are free to complain about the price, but it just doesn't make sense in my eyes. Creatures being released for double their original price after being retired for a decade is extremely fair, in my eyes.

ethereality • 24 Oct 2020, 1:18 AM

I don't think it's necessarily "cheap" for any of us, but a higher starting point is to prevent the collapse of the trading economy, not that we "everybody is more privileged than me" like @calenlass is implying.

ethereality • 24 Oct 2020, 1:20 AM

Personally, I get 90% of my CC from trading, and only had the privelage of buying my own in the past year or so after I started working, and yes, I don't fling money whenever I want to. That's just so besides the point imo, it's about preserving values

yogurt • 24 Oct 2020, 1:32 AM

I dont buy CC. It’s possible to work for what you want on eggcave. I dont agree with anything less than 1000cc starting point. In my opinion I hope the rarer creatures are much higher. The fun in trading and collecting is the challenge. Theres no point if its so easy.

yogurt • 24 Oct 2020, 1:33 AM

Yes they’re just pixels, but to me it’s like a trophy of my hard work. If you want free “pixels” just take a screenshot and paste them into a word document. Thats how you can “play” without working hard or paying money.

kalessin • 24 Oct 2020, 1:41 AM

I have always supported re-release in some capacity, it's nice to see that so much thought has been put into this process and the community's opinions are being heard. Looking forward to seeing how it goes 😊

ethereality • 24 Oct 2020, 1:48 AM

@yogurt the last part made me laugh out loud xD

minnie298a • 24 Oct 2020, 1:51 AM

I feel the price of 1K (or more, they won't all 1K) is reasonable. Nov's creatures were initially released 8 years ago. If you don't want to pay the re-release price, try to find someone trading originals, and pay the 5k to 7k they are listed for on Budgie's.

dragiigy • 24 Oct 2020, 2:03 AM

@mami I am talking about how to make money and how ro make many players happy, not just few. From experience, not from this nice game. And I can see, not so many players are active. I am 100 % sure, once there were more. 😊

magenta • 24 Oct 2020, 2:29 AM

lol really offtopic comment but i want to see rereleases of gadfly, corsal and greem please!

corpse • 24 Oct 2020, 3:16 AM

This is an amazing idea. Not really interested in most of the oldies though but if by any chance a Sherth is re-released, I'll make sure to save up for one.

blizzards • 24 Oct 2020, 4:21 AM

OMG ADANAS IN DECEMBER ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

mishababy • 24 Oct 2020, 4:30 AM

I understand wanting to keep them valuable, but I vehemently disagree with charging so much for them. Whatever. Good luck with this.

sparklefox • 24 Oct 2020, 5:29 AM

I also kinda agree that 1,000CC seems a little too expensive, but I guess it's sort of reasonable.

calenlass • 24 Oct 2020, 5:57 AM

I don't get what the "challenge" is when you buy something. You want to make it a "challenge"? Release those in the Asteroid. I feel more accomplished when I manage to catch something in the Asteroid. Spending money to buy something does not equate meeting a challenge....

isathebelle • 24 Oct 2020, 5:57 AM

Seems to me that a money profit is what is the most important here but for players who don't have a CC to spent that seems a bit unfair(why not at least 700-800 CC) cos in the end there will be those who will hoard those creatures and making a profit from others players!!

isathebelle • 24 Oct 2020, 6:01 AM

@calenlass I agree with you, it would be a great idea to release those in the Asteroid! It's a more reasonable suggestion!!!

calenlass • 24 Oct 2020, 6:02 AM

..., but then, I'm only here playing a game and just giving my opinion. Life is very challenging with this virus affecting the whole world so I'm not going to sweat it too much regarding this game. I'm sure lots ppl are saying "don't like, don't play". Good luck with this.

isathebelle • 24 Oct 2020, 6:07 AM

@calenlass...but then I like this game really and rules are here to be changed not stay forever and besides why not be more flexible towards a player's needs!!

dragiigy • 24 Oct 2020, 6:24 AM

@isathebelle AT LEAST one, who 90% agrees with me. 😊 Lower price, more eggs. Result: more happy players. More players mean more money for owners. It is so simple in RL. But always some will remain unhappy.

dragiigy • 24 Oct 2020, 6:24 AM

And for those who payed 500 CC. Nowhere in the world you would get 100% or even 1000% interest in 10 years 😉 So price 600 would be reasonable.

isathebelle • 24 Oct 2020, 6:30 AM

@dragiigy yeah that would be great 😃

lucas • 24 Oct 2020, 6:37 AM

Oooooh, this is REALLY cool! Even though I'm not a CC buyer (because of payment limitations), I'm pretty excited to see some of those old CC critters around again. I can see this was pretty well thought, so props to the eggcave team 😊

lucas • 24 Oct 2020, 6:41 AM

@dragiigy You have to take the in-game economy/market in consideration + the players reaction to these changes. As a former game mod, trust me when I say it isn't that simple!

dragiigy • 24 Oct 2020, 6:42 AM

@lucas Economy....did you read waht I had written? More eggs, lower price, more happy plaers, more money..... Thats the economy.

lucas • 24 Oct 2020, 6:43 AM

@dragiigy yes I did, and that's not really how it works 😊

lucas • 24 Oct 2020, 6:49 AM

@laylamocha Ian said they are considering releasing them in 'waves' in different times, that might help!

isathebelle • 24 Oct 2020, 7:05 AM

@lucas I guess it works only if you have a profit, that's mean more money more gain, right?

dragiigy • 24 Oct 2020, 7:16 AM

@lucas I am talking about trading economy, not intelectual economy (sorry for my bad English). BTW, I am self-empoyed for 30 years.

dragiigy • 24 Oct 2020, 7:18 AM

I am playing EC for 5 weeks. My first impression was: this game is almost dead, so few active players. I am sure, once there were 30 pages with trades. Now some offers are weeks old. So changes are needed. But not for every cost. And I will buy no matter the price will be

dragiigy • 24 Oct 2020, 7:19 AM

@sinthr SUPER WORDS !!!

isathebelle • 24 Oct 2020, 7:22 AM

@sinthr I would say that's a bit unfair.Sure we need to save our economy but some players will earn more profits while others will buy from them more expensive creatures just cos that someone bought a dozen of it and now makes a profit from it, unfortunately, it can't be stopped!

minnie298a • 24 Oct 2020, 7:44 AM

@isathebelle It was stated earlier that hoarding practices will be watched for. If Ian or the mods suspect hoarding for profit, they will introduce limits before the end of the trial. We are being given a chance to show we can be sensible. If players can't, it will be changed.

isathebelle • 24 Oct 2020, 8:07 AM

@minnie298a We'll see, yet, I'm not so optimistic!

minnie298a • 24 Oct 2020, 8:15 AM

@isathebelle I'm not overly optimistic it will stay limitless either. But it is on the radar of the those in charge, so it will be monitored. But in what seems to be the motto for 2020, "the actions of the few may impact the majority who are doing the right thing".

isathebelle • 24 Oct 2020, 8:16 AM

@sinthr yeah ,well sure let's see first. Perhaps something will change, hopefully!

isathebelle • 24 Oct 2020, 8:19 AM

@minnie298a Let's hope for the best then!

dragiigy • 24 Oct 2020, 8:30 AM

@sinthr and @isathebelle and @minnie298a - if year 2020... 2020 Eggs should be available (not per 2020 CC...ihihi). And of course limit. One, maybe two per cove. (ops, almost have written per scroll 😃 😃 )

nanami • 24 Oct 2020, 8:52 AM

interesting idea

megamisama90 • 24 Oct 2020, 9:59 AM

I like the idea someone said in the comments that the creatures would pop out on random times to be bought. I'm so happy this is happening ❤️

osean • 24 Oct 2020, 10:11 AM

I honestly think that the price is a fair compromise for both sides. I personally am excited for this to happen as there are quite a few I would like to get my hands on. I hope that this will be a success so that we can go beyond the 6 month trial period.

pwuffy • 24 Oct 2020, 11:02 AM

just caught up reading & i think there are a lot of important points being said here, personally i'd be fine even with a 500CC price tag, but even still, 1000CC is reasonable & a good compromise, and as said before, the purpose is to put more of these creatures into --

pwuffy • 24 Oct 2020, 11:03 AM

--circulation so that trading for older creatures becomes lively again, so instead of even needing CC for them, you can *GASP* trade with other creatures reasonably! not to mention CC is 100% tradeable, so if you know there is a creature rerelease coming up soon you really want--
