Announcing A Trial Run Of Cash Shop Rereleases

October 23, 2020 at 1:00 PM

A Letter To Our Community

For a while now, it has been well-known in the Egg Cave community that many of the site's oldest creatures are virtually unobtainable due to their low supply and consequently unaffordable prices. Many of the site's oldest creatures are often the rarest and they're locked away on accounts that are now inactive or, if the account is still active, will never be traded or auctioned.

When we originally introduced the concept of "Cash Shop Monthlies" years ago, it was shortsighted of us to promise to retire these creatures forever. By promising to retire these creatures forever, Egg Cave is at risk of becoming more of a museum of shiny, unobtainable creatures rather than a living, breathing site that's fun and based on working hard for the creatures you love and want to collect.

The idea of rereleasing creatures has been frequently discussed over the last several years. In years past, it has been met with opposition due to fears that rereleasing creatures would lead to an inevitable collapse in values. While it is a basic economic principle that increased supply will slow the rate of an increase in value or cause it to drop, we do not believe that rereleases have to happen in a way that cause values to collapse. In fact, values cannot "collapse" when there was always a price floor of 500 CC to begin with. With rereleases, the floor will be even higher.

In recent months, players have begun discussing the idea of rereleases again but with more positivity and viewing the idea more favorably. We've been pleased to see this and want to engage with the community. That's why today we're announcing a 6-month trial run for rereleasing creatures on Egg Cave. Worried or wonder what "trial run" means? Please continue reading, as these rereleases will be governed by a lot of strict rules.

Increase Supply But Protect Values

Our main goal of rereleasing Cash Shop creatures is to increase their supply but implement strict rules that Team Egg Cave adheres to protect their values. Here's the rundown of what we're proposing and how rereleases would work:

  • Protect value: Rereleased species have a beginning price at 1000 CC or higher depending on their Population Rank (a creature that's lower on the Population Rank sells for higher). They are never less than 1000 CC.
  • Protect value: Cap on the number rereleased. A species population can only be doubled at most. For example, if there are 50 living creatures of a species that's going to be rereleased, a maximum of 100 could be rereleased and no more. Team Egg Cave may choose to set this lower to protect values. Once the limit is reached, the creature is "sold out" in the Cash Shop.
  • Protect value: A species cannot be rereleased two years in a row
  • Rereleases occur on a monthly timetable, just like monthlies
  • Only 2-3 species can be rereleased per month
  • A species can only be rereleased in and during the month that it was originally available (a November monthly could only ever be rereleased in the month of November, maintaining the concept of a monthly)
  • Species selected for rereleases will be announced at least one month in advance

We are proposing a 6-month trial run for these rereleases from November 2020 to April 2021. During April 2021, we will gather feedback and vote as a community if you would like to see rereleases continue (as is or with changes) or be stopped altogether. If we do not have greater than 50% support from the community for creature rereleases, they will be terminated and halted.

here we gooooo πŸ˜‹ ❀️ love you eggcave

izziedragon • 23 Oct 2020, 1:10 PM

Thank you so much for listening to the community and giving this a shot, it means a lot. I'm excited for what is to come!

sorrow • 23 Oct 2020, 1:16 PM

i dunno if i'll be buying any personally, but glad you guys are giving this a shot! no doubt a lot of other players are very excited about this!

iris1929578 • 23 Oct 2020, 1:17 PM

i can't buy anything but that's brilliant 😱

zikitty • 23 Oct 2020, 1:19 PM

*stares intently* If only I had the money...

isathebelle • 23 Oct 2020, 1:21 PM

Absolutely yes πŸ˜ƒ Wow, that's a dream come true 😊I can hardly wait πŸ˜‹ Thank you, guys ❀️

lunacharm1037 • 23 Oct 2020, 1:21 PM

Wow! Great idea, I didn't buy them first time around, glad to see I have another chance. I gotta get some CC πŸ˜ƒ

stefrawr • 23 Oct 2020, 1:22 PM

Sweet idea!

thursdays_dove • 23 Oct 2020, 1:25 PM

I fully support this. I would love to see some of these come back and others to have the opportunity to obtain them. πŸ˜ƒ

raindrops • 23 Oct 2020, 1:27 PM

@Ian & Team This idea is absolutely FANTASTIC! Only problem I see is the ppl that cant obtain rerelease creatures before they run out due to school, work, etc. To me not really fair someone cant afford to get a rerelease creature if it gets "sold out." Otherwise, GREAT IDEA! ❀️

ravensong • 23 Oct 2020, 1:27 PM

Whoah! I'm not personally into the oldies but I know some users would love to see the Encalop or Gadfly re-released!

jlya • 23 Oct 2020, 1:34 PM

@ian & team Thank you so much for listening to the wants and needs of the community, we really appreciate your hard work to find a solution that fits for all ❀️ The proposed restrictions, especially population cap, sound like a great way to try it out. Looking forward to this πŸ˜ƒ

raindrops • 23 Oct 2020, 1:39 PM

@Ian & Team Did not see a limit that one player can obtain. Which means that the players w/alot of cc can obtain numerous creatures & they could be sold out before others could have the possibility of obtaining them. Would there be a limit on obtaining creatures per person?

Ian • 23 Oct 2020, 1:41 PM

@raindrops thanks for mentioning timing, as we know 12 AM ECT isn’t accessible to the whole world. We are considering releases in β€œwaves” at different times (pre-announced) as well. Like: 20 released 12 AM, 20 released 8 AM, 20 released 5 PM, etc.

Ian • 23 Oct 2020, 1:41 PM

Blown away by the initial round of support! We love you all! 😸

pegasasu • 23 Oct 2020, 1:48 PM

yay! Very exciting 😊

raindrops • 23 Oct 2020, 1:49 PM

@Ian Thx for the clarity on the timing. One other question about the limit one person would be able to obtain? As we all know some ppl dont have the cc right away to get the creature before it may "run out." Ty for letting all give their opinions in this! U & Team are great! ❀️

raccoon • 23 Oct 2020, 1:59 PM

I would LOVE to see the Rie rereleased in April! It's been my dream creature for a while and a rerelease in April would let me achieve my dream of having one stolen on my birthday (2nd) ❀️ Im very happy with this idea, and I hope it goes smoothly and continues after the trial ❀️

pipkitten • 23 Oct 2020, 1:59 PM

Oh, this is a really nice opportunity for those who haven't been around forever to get a creature they've always wanted. 😊 Maybe I'll even get to expand my precious Solis collection at some point, haha! πŸ˜‹

asbe • 23 Oct 2020, 2:01 PM

Yay! I'd buy me something special on Christmas ^^

brookie • 23 Oct 2020, 2:09 PM

I'm so stoked for this!!

mrsgiggles • 23 Oct 2020, 2:13 PM

DOOVOO! DOOVOO! DOOVOO! It's the only non-TS pet I don't have!

carcharhiniformes • 23 Oct 2020, 2:14 PM

I'm really excited for this! I've always been a huge supporter of re-releasing creatures for more users to obtain so I personally can't wait!

dragonnn • 23 Oct 2020, 2:20 PM

Balrogipuwet and Vampyr. One day.

mdom • 23 Oct 2020, 2:21 PM

ready to click a million times to get them!!

fire-and-spice • 23 Oct 2020, 2:28 PM

AWESOME rerelease Nym please please please

crystalshard • 23 Oct 2020, 2:30 PM

So exciting! Seconding the Rie re-release, and would also love the chance to obtain Eurog or Amma ❀️

pouncessoftly • 23 Oct 2020, 2:31 PM

@ian - will there be a limit of how many per account can be purchased perhaps? Obviously I'm hoping to be able to get one of each species re-released to add to my collection and am hoping that people can't buy ... oh, say 5+ of each so everyone gets a fair shake at buying.

pouncessoftly • 23 Oct 2020, 2:32 PM

Other than that, I am completely LOVING this idea. Thank you so much for at least giving it a trial run! I am so excited! πŸ˜ƒ

mami • 23 Oct 2020, 2:33 PM

Strongly suggest a max per account; I can see whales snatching up all the 'big ones' only to sell them for close to original value or not at all

chapus • 23 Oct 2020, 2:37 PM

@mami I highly agree with that!! It would def suck for a few individuals to hoard creatures to resell them :/

spell • 23 Oct 2020, 2:37 PM

Maybe I'll finally be able to fill out some more of my wishlist ^^ Do agree that there should be a limit per account though!

prairie • 23 Oct 2020, 2:38 PM

Agreeing with @mami on the cap per user. I know for sure people will be ready to camp and snatch up as many as they can, and that would hinder the amount that can be spread to people. Especially with the cap on certain species.

prairie • 23 Oct 2020, 2:38 PM

But SO excited for this!

dragiigy • 23 Oct 2020, 2:42 PM

All is about money. 1000 CC per creature, OK. Your decision. But why only 100 for instance? Let us say, 100 x 10 is... Increase the amount to 1000 and decrease the price to 100 CC More players would be happy and that is the point of the game. Isnt it? Or it is making money?

frankenstein • 23 Oct 2020, 2:42 PM

I'm really hoping there's a limit so people can't clean out the supply before others even get a proper chance. I was getting ready to stop trying for the more expensive creatures since folks that already have them seem to only trade amongst each other for other rares.

chapus • 23 Oct 2020, 2:45 PM

But this is big and very much welcome news!! This will very much help new users and also older ones seeking these creatures, but without oversaturating the market!!

sparklefox • 23 Oct 2020, 2:46 PM

Sounds pretty cool, I'm all for it. My poor butt can't afford to buy any of them though, so I guess I'll have to feed like mad or miss out on the fun.

Orderedchaos • 23 Oct 2020, 3:00 PM

For those asking about limits: That's part of why we're doing a test run. We need to see if that's even a thing that will happen. We'll be keeping track of the numbers for the first month or two of the trial and see what we need to change for future months.

pouncessoftly • 23 Oct 2020, 3:05 PM

@Orderedchaos - Perfect, that sounds very fair. 😊 Also, releasing at predetermined times in waves would be amazing too, I'm typically still on at midnight ECT but I know a lot of people can't be. This will make it more fair for everyone to get a better chance!

pouncessoftly • 23 Oct 2020, 3:06 PM

So much love for the team, seriously. This gives me a whole new sense of excitement for the game, being able to have a true chance at some wishlist creatures I never truly thought I'd be able to get hold of.

pouncessoftly • 23 Oct 2020, 3:14 PM

There isn't any way to filter the archives to show months of release is there? 😸 If not, that would certainly be a nifty feature to have added if it's not too difficult. ^.^

Ian • 23 Oct 2020, 3:15 PM

@dragiigy nice try but it's not all about money. It's about allowing members of our community the chance and shot--of which there is currently none for many species--at creatures that are otherwise functionally extinct. the 1000 CC starting price is about protecting values

Ian • 23 Oct 2020, 3:18 PM

rerelease announcements 1 month in advance is meant to allow you the time to decide if you want to get CC on-hand in advance, so that way it's not a surprise blog post and you go "they're selling out! crap!" you'll have the heads up.

izziedragon • 23 Oct 2020, 3:18 PM

@dragonnn SAME

Ian • 23 Oct 2020, 3:18 PM

to the many concerned about account limits for purchasing: this is 100% on our radar and we're willing to make a change + impose account purchase limits if we sense a rerelease mafia rising. rerelease data will be analyzed and we will be watching this to prevent hoarding.

izziedragon • 23 Oct 2020, 3:22 PM

@Ian I think it is a fair call to see if it's an issue in the first place. I respect that decision. Hopefully not. I know I'll personally only be getting one or two of whatever I desire.

jazzyleia • 23 Oct 2020, 3:23 PM

I'm excited for this!
