Announcing A Trial Run Of Cash Shop Rereleases

October 23, 2020 at 1:00 PM

A Letter To Our Community

For a while now, it has been well-known in the Egg Cave community that many of the site's oldest creatures are virtually unobtainable due to their low supply and consequently unaffordable prices. Many of the site's oldest creatures are often the rarest and they're locked away on accounts that are now inactive or, if the account is still active, will never be traded or auctioned.

When we originally introduced the concept of "Cash Shop Monthlies" years ago, it was shortsighted of us to promise to retire these creatures forever. By promising to retire these creatures forever, Egg Cave is at risk of becoming more of a museum of shiny, unobtainable creatures rather than a living, breathing site that's fun and based on working hard for the creatures you love and want to collect.

The idea of rereleasing creatures has been frequently discussed over the last several years. In years past, it has been met with opposition due to fears that rereleasing creatures would lead to an inevitable collapse in values. While it is a basic economic principle that increased supply will slow the rate of an increase in value or cause it to drop, we do not believe that rereleases have to happen in a way that cause values to collapse. In fact, values cannot "collapse" when there was always a price floor of 500 CC to begin with. With rereleases, the floor will be even higher.

In recent months, players have begun discussing the idea of rereleases again but with more positivity and viewing the idea more favorably. We've been pleased to see this and want to engage with the community. That's why today we're announcing a 6-month trial run for rereleasing creatures on Egg Cave. Worried or wonder what "trial run" means? Please continue reading, as these rereleases will be governed by a lot of strict rules.

Increase Supply But Protect Values

Our main goal of rereleasing Cash Shop creatures is to increase their supply but implement strict rules that Team Egg Cave adheres to protect their values. Here's the rundown of what we're proposing and how rereleases would work:

  • Protect value: Rereleased species have a beginning price at 1000 CC or higher depending on their Population Rank (a creature that's lower on the Population Rank sells for higher). They are never less than 1000 CC.
  • Protect value: Cap on the number rereleased. A species population can only be doubled at most. For example, if there are 50 living creatures of a species that's going to be rereleased, a maximum of 100 could be rereleased and no more. Team Egg Cave may choose to set this lower to protect values. Once the limit is reached, the creature is "sold out" in the Cash Shop.
  • Protect value: A species cannot be rereleased two years in a row
  • Rereleases occur on a monthly timetable, just like monthlies
  • Only 2-3 species can be rereleased per month
  • A species can only be rereleased in and during the month that it was originally available (a November monthly could only ever be rereleased in the month of November, maintaining the concept of a monthly)
  • Species selected for rereleases will be announced at least one month in advance

We are proposing a 6-month trial run for these rereleases from November 2020 to April 2021. During April 2021, we will gather feedback and vote as a community if you would like to see rereleases continue (as is or with changes) or be stopped altogether. If we do not have greater than 50% support from the community for creature rereleases, they will be terminated and halted.

alternatively to account purchase limits, there could be an account cooldown limit of 10-60 minutes between purchases. would prevent both hoarding + crazy refresh sniping at the same time.

raindrops • 23 Oct 2020, 3:24 PM

@Ian & @Orderedchaos ty for clarifying the limit per person. I agree that there will be "hoarding" without a doubt. But I guess we will see what happens. Thx again Team ❀️

raccoon • 23 Oct 2020, 3:33 PM

Its important to draw a nice distinction between someone who just wants a few of the same creature and someone who is hoarding. If the Rie were re-released, I'd try to buy at least 3, since I'd want one in each stage.

dragiigy • 23 Oct 2020, 3:37 PM

@Ian A nice try? 25 € for three images? Well, yes, everything is about money. Maybe you should check, how much money I spend in 5 weeks of playing. And you? I hope, you will sell everything. Fingers crossed. 😊

yogurt • 23 Oct 2020, 3:43 PM

A species population can only be doubled at most but if 100 are released for the initial 50 wouldnt that mean the end total is 150 so thats triple? LOL

yogurt • 23 Oct 2020, 3:44 PM

Otherwise this is totally fine. That is just what is bothering me as I read through it the first time. XD

firedawn • 23 Oct 2020, 3:45 PM

This is amazing news!! Personally would love a shot at a Draqua or Crystar; but I’m so glad for this. πŸ˜ƒ

pouncessoftly • 23 Oct 2020, 3:49 PM

@Ian Oh, I quite like the idea of a cooldown of 10-60 minutes as long as its per species? 😊 And if it's needed, obviousy. I'll be trying for one of each personally (I hope I can afford it at least, lol)

raccoon • 23 Oct 2020, 3:49 PM

@dragiigy Ive been playing for 6 years and I've spent a total of $480 on this game. You don't have to spend a penny if you don't want to. People save ec and exchange for cc all the time. It's not greed, the site needs to be funded to stay up. Paying is entirely optional.

yogurt • 23 Oct 2020, 3:58 PM

@ian does a the 1000cc price starting point also apply to the 200cc mid-month creatures? Are those even up for rerelease since you mentioned monthlies were being rereleased. Not sure if the discounted ones are also considered monthlies.

dragiigy • 23 Oct 2020, 3:59 PM

@raccoon Good. But same effect is achived in selling 1000 creatures for 100 CC and making much more players happy and they will NOT leave the game 😊 Now you can spend 42 $/month (2x500 + 200 + 3x1000). Will you? BTW, In one month I have spent 70$ ( x 72 is.... πŸ˜‰) Igor out

yogurt • 23 Oct 2020, 4:01 PM

@ian I think it should be : a creature that's HIGHER on the Population Rank sells for higher.

thedarkarcher • 23 Oct 2020, 4:06 PM

This sounds decent however im definitely concerned as i work out of hours from eggcave times therefore actually obtaining these are a disadvantage to outside usa players.

raccoon • 23 Oct 2020, 4:10 PM

@dragiigy Budgies guide currently suggests 6-7k cc as the value for a Corlinn. Rereleasing 1000 of them for only 100cc (1.4% of the 'value') would throw the economy into chaos and make people very upset. The goal isn't to hand them out like candy, but to put more on the market..

thedarkarcher • 23 Oct 2020, 4:12 PM

Just noticed the wave thing sorry. I think it would be fair to do waves of equal amounts then more in one time slot and less in another.

yogurt • 23 Oct 2020, 4:24 PM

I like the idea of them being randomly available at the cashshop. With no specific time. Like they just pop up randomly throughout the month XD that way no one can sit and just wait for them. People who are more active would be rewarded with possibly seeing them in the CSP more

raccoon • 23 Oct 2020, 4:25 PM

Maybe you could be allowed one egg per species per wave. So if you bought a corlinn in the first wave, you'd need to wait until the second wave to purchase another one? Just an idea.

hinokazes • 23 Oct 2020, 4:51 PM

It's cool those pets will be back but I personally 100% don't care. I don't spend money so no CC to afford them, and I almost never click so no EC to trade for CC. So for me, this news is just a "whatever". But I guess it will make a lot of people happy :v

frankenstein • 23 Oct 2020, 5:11 PM

I am really excited about this, ngl. Being a newer user, but a serious collector, this goes a long way to bridging a gap. Just getting more of these creatures circulated will be awesome. I'm super ready!

ethereality • 23 Oct 2020, 5:37 PM

This is wonderful, thank you! My one concern is that there should definitely be a user limit to one creature per day so everyone has a chance to get one.

ethereality • 23 Oct 2020, 5:46 PM

@dragiigy What?? 100 CC is absolutely too low when the point is to *protect the values*, All 200 of them or so would be sold out within seconds if they were priced at 100CC, likely by the same 20 users who got there first...

cosmia • 23 Oct 2020, 5:47 PM

I like the idea. Creatures I hope to see return are Bellato, Kektron, Elkikorn, and Zuote

ethereality • 23 Oct 2020, 5:52 PM

Suggestions~~ / January: Clous, Arnmnae / February: Yuki, Crystar / March: Shamrue, Ranfil / April: Rie, Sheap

tamomo • 23 Oct 2020, 6:08 PM

Ahhh Γ¨.Γ¨ Finally! I Hope we can get some Nyms c:

lexicon • 23 Oct 2020, 6:11 PM

CRYSTAR CRYSTAR CRYSTAR πŸ˜ƒ. I absolutely love and support this idea and thank you guys so much for taking the time to take everyone's thoughts and opinions into account and try coming up with a compromise❀️. I really like the cooldown idea of buying one then having to wait 😊

iia • 23 Oct 2020, 6:18 PM

their should be a limit to prevent hoarding because once it’s sold out, it’s sold out. I’m not keen on you you giving most of the info at once. The demand of cc is immediately going to go up and The values of all creatures are going down unless a LOT Of people buy cc

pouncessoftly • 23 Oct 2020, 6:20 PM

@ian - @/yogurt asks an interesting question - are the creatures that were originally 200cc going to be potentially available again as well, and will their price point also be minimum of 1000cc? Our curiious lil minds want to know πŸ˜ƒ

anarchy • 23 Oct 2020, 6:33 PM

This is huge 😱

Orderedchaos • 23 Oct 2020, 6:39 PM

@sinthr This was answered earlier. Part of this trial run is see if that is even going to be a problem. If it then we'll add limits.

veritaspunk • 23 Oct 2020, 8:15 PM

My only prevailing thought is 2020: What Will happen next ? ;o ... also - What about retired travels ? @Ian πŸ˜‰

mami • 23 Oct 2020, 8:23 PM

@dragiigy I dont think five weeks of playtime is really long enough to realize just how much of a problem solver, an affordable one at that, this entire idea is but go off I guess

rael_barclay • 23 Oct 2020, 8:29 PM

I love this! Thank you guys for doing it! It is nice to imagine having a chance at some of the rarest. 😊

ethereality • 23 Oct 2020, 8:52 PM

@mami the queen has spoken

pwuffy • 23 Oct 2020, 9:22 PM

yay! so excited that this is being explored. thank you to @Ian for listening to our concerns. i don't have the time atm to read through all the comments but of course the creature i would be looking forward to the most is the greem ❀️ 😊 this is soo exciting!!!

seraph • 23 Oct 2020, 9:34 PM

Oh boy. I'll stay away from all this for the good of my own sanity, I don't agree with many things stated. But I really hope it helps the community at the end!

calenlass • 23 Oct 2020, 10:18 PM

@seraph I'm with you. At this moment, I'm spending more than I can afford here for a bunch of pixels. Not to mention feeding to get enough EC to buy cove space(maybe lose this idiotic extra charging for every cove added? Or increase the feed payout instead of just once a month?)

calenlass • 23 Oct 2020, 10:22 PM

@seraph I know game sites like this need money to function but it seems this site is getting more and more about making players pay to play, and those of us who can't afford won't get much chance at any of these creatures. 500CC is hard enough for some people and some ppl are...

calenlass • 23 Oct 2020, 10:23 PM

@seraph ... talking of HOARDING these re-releases at 1000CC each.

spectaclenest • 23 Oct 2020, 10:40 PM

@Ian so excited for this! thank you for trying it out! i think that a way to gear this more towards players adding to their collections and less towards people buying to resell thus skewing the "creature economy" is pricing them at 500cc and limiting one per account = four total

spectaclenest • 23 Oct 2020, 10:41 PM

@Ian unlesssss the chance to have all these extra creatures is making you consider unlocking the long-overdue fifth account?? 😱 😱 maybe just for players with original accounts older than 5-7 years? the space race is prohibitively expensive for those long-term collectors!! ❀️ ❀️

mastergemma • 23 Oct 2020, 11:03 PM

@yogurt and @pouncessoftly this is still a trial run, let's not get too far ahead just yet with the 200 CC creatures just for now. If the trial goes well (even if it doesn't) this will be discussed in the future.

magenta • 23 Oct 2020, 11:14 PM

i think i really like this idea of a trial! perhaps impose hard limits instead of a cooldown so 1 per user? that will prevent hoarding 😊 and idk why people are complaining about price.... cause if u tried to buy these critters from other users they'd be way more-

magenta • 23 Oct 2020, 11:15 PM

-expensive than 1000cc LOL thanks to the eggcave team for implementing something like this! and im so glad that they're at the very least trying, so let's not be ungrateful πŸ˜‹

pouncessoftly • 23 Oct 2020, 11:19 PM

@magenta I completely agree .. I’ve got no problem with the starting price. 😊 @mastergemma Fair enough, curiously running wild in me was all, hehe! That and excitement! I can’t wait, the Scarrow is one of my big wishes. ❀️

magenta • 23 Oct 2020, 11:24 PM

@pouncessoftly thanks 😊 its just idk rude for people to stomp all over eggcave's efforts despite them having a good and exciting idea this time, its a really good bridge-closer too, am i a little worried about dropping rarity? yes but at the same time lets not be ungrateful ☹️

mastergemma • 23 Oct 2020, 11:30 PM

I think it may be important to reiterate, we are gathering data. Positive and negative, from new users and old users. It does not matter what is said, we just need to know what users think about what is happening in the future. Be as critical as you deem necessary.

cho • 23 Oct 2020, 11:32 PM

OMG YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

veritaspunk • 23 Oct 2020, 11:43 PM

@mastergemma I just hope consideration for reprising retired travels doesn't get overlooked πŸ˜‹

cho • 23 Oct 2020, 11:45 PM

PLEASE: Arnmnae, Ignis, Pixgog, Solis /// Macbot, Onny for collection

mithmel • 23 Oct 2020, 11:46 PM

If only I had the money...
