The Calculation Is Same But Creature Levels Display Differently Now

Same Calculation But Displayed Differently

We have updated the way that creature levels will be displayed at Egg Cave. In short, we are (1) taking existing creature levels and dividing them by 100 and (2) capping them at Level 1000. Creatures are now immortal at Level 20 instead of Level 2000. (This is because 2000 divided by 100 equals 20.)

We want to strongly stress that—in essence—nothing has changed with your creature levels, immortality, or how hunger works. We're simply chopping off the last two digits, making them appear "lower", but in terms of functionality they're still the same.

creatures-splash.jpg

Why are you implementing this change?

There are a few reasons.

Aging creatures: we're introducing a cap at level 1000 because there are some aging creatures that have amassed very impressive stats. Some of the highest stats creatures are now "level six million" is which is excessive and unnecessary. As levels continue to increase, they'd eventually be cut off your images.

Our servers need to be re-caching your images less: in truth, this is the biggest reason for this change. Dynamically building and updating your creature images is one of the most expensive operations, hardware wise, that we do at Egg Cave. Essentially, we need to reprint the level on your creature images (i.e. re-cache) less frequently than we currently do.

white_clovotl_toy.png

What do I need to do?

Nothing. Please allow up to 3 days for us to fully re-cache and reprint your new creature levels. Everybody's creature images are queued to be updated automatically. Many people will see the updated creature level within the next 24 hours.

"You've lowered my creature level!"

When it comes down to the math, your creature level is exactly the same as before. The creature immortality level—now level 20—has been adjusted alongside it. We've simply updated the way that your level will be displayed. The functionality of the game is exactly the same. It takes the same amount of work to achieve a now Level 20 creature as it did a Level 2000 creature. The only difference is the number of zeros.

It will take time for everybody to adjust to understanding what the new levels "mean." Level 20 which has historically been associated with a brand-new creature will now represent a mature creature.

Are all of my creatures in danger of dying now?

We're including another blurb at the bottom of this blog post in case you've panic-read everything and skipped the details. Creatures are now immortal at Level 20. We promise, even if that feels like a newbie creature level!

carrot_sticks.jpg

Are immortality dates affected?

No. This is because the only thing that's changed is the way that creature levels are displaying. The functionality of the game is the same. Immortality dates will now be logged at Level 20.

What will happen with level leaderboard rankings?

Levels are now capped at 1000 but the highest average stats from creatures still determine the spots among the Level 1000 creatures. In other words: the level leaderboard rankings are exactly the same as before. If you get more stats than another Level 1000 creature, you can still knock them off this leaderboard.

ICYMI: Creature Level Calculation

A creature's level is the average of its three stats (views plus clicks plus feeds divided by 3) divided by 100. The "divided by 100" is the new part. If you want to get technical, here's the math equation:

Creature Level = ceil((Views + Clicks + Feeds) / 3) / 100)
where ceil means round up

Wouldn't that take away the point for people who worked to get on the leaderboards for All Time: Highest Level ^^"

pipkitten • 13 May 2020, 2:04 PM

Oh, interesting change! Seeing low levels everywhere will take some getting used to, haha!

fire-and-spice • 13 May 2020, 2:04 PM

Level 20? Personally, I liked immortality better when it was level 2000... why did you do this without a vote or something? sorry, that's just how I feel.

pwuffy • 13 May 2020, 2:05 PM

i am also curious how the leaderboard will be affected, but i appreciate the transparency in this change and don't really mind it at all since nothing is really different ^^ thanks for letting us know!

fanficmelon • 13 May 2020, 2:07 PM

All of you haters be hating on the new level system, I find it kinda neat- all of my creatures are below level 100 now and actually are reall close to the level of my 'mons on pokemon swsh- which is kind of weird but really cool at the same time

meisawesome • 13 May 2020, 2:08 PM

Ok, so from my limited understanding, creatures now immortalise at lvl. 20, but it will take longer for them to increase in level

sandara • 13 May 2020, 2:11 PM

I don't think the leaderboards will be affected, 'cause they will be lowering all the creatures and to get to level 20 you will need the same status as you had to have for the level 2000, 6000 points.

Orderedchaos • 13 May 2020, 2:11 PM

@spell @pwuffy If you were at the top of the leaderboard before you will still be now. We're just calculating levels a little differently now.

sandara • 13 May 2020, 2:11 PM

So basically only the level number showed will change, the feed/click/view needed will be the same.

Orderedchaos • 13 May 2020, 2:12 PM

@sandara Exactly.

sparklefox • 13 May 2020, 2:13 PM

This will take a lot of getting used to. I completely understand why you're doing this, though. I liked the look of the large "L[number]" levels because "pea brain like big number".

spell • 13 May 2020, 2:13 PM

@Orderedchaos Ah, ok ^^ Was just confused since a lot of creatures will be at the level cap 1000 now

Orderedchaos • 13 May 2020, 2:13 PM

@dragistar12 You will still need 6,000 combined stats to get to immortality, its just that now 6,000 combined stats = 20 and not 2,000.

Orderedchaos • 13 May 2020, 2:15 PM

@spell Its also possible that that particular leaderboard might disappear. But for now, if you're on it then you'll still be on it.

aedia • 13 May 2020, 2:17 PM

This makes sense considering the glitches with images lately, so I completely understand. I don't mind the changes. 😊Thank you Eggcave staff and @Ian for making a great experience for everyone. ❤️

ravensong • 13 May 2020, 2:17 PM

Hmmm...this will definitely be odd... :/

pwuffy • 13 May 2020, 2:17 PM

@Orderedchaos so does the 1000 level cap only apply to the creature images? & theres a "hidden" level that is still going to be used for the all time: highest level leaderboard? seems like the leaderboard is the same right now but i was just curious how it would be after reset ^^

Ian • 13 May 2020, 2:17 PM

@spell @pwuffy Levels Leaderboards are displaying exactly as the same before. Levels capped at 1000 but higher average stats creatures still determine the position that they occupy, 100% same as before. Adding this to blog post to prevent confusion. Sorry about that.

pwuffy • 13 May 2020, 2:18 PM

@Ian got it! thanks for the clarification & transparency! 😊

sodabearjess • 13 May 2020, 2:19 PM

In the "My Creatures" tab, it still shows the old level. I have some creatures that are level 1960 for example, but are considered immortal (level 20). So they won't die? Even though they technically aren't level 2000 yet?

Ian • 13 May 2020, 2:19 PM

@pwuffy yeah that's another way to put it 😸

spell • 13 May 2020, 2:20 PM

@Ian Makes sense, thanks for letting us know! ^^

Orderedchaos • 13 May 2020, 2:20 PM

@sodabearjess Yes they are immortal and won't die because level 20 is the new 2000.

doctorwho • 13 May 2020, 2:21 PM

I understand the need for the change and appreciate the work it takes to cut it down. I'm gonna miss level 33,000, though. :/ The only thing I'm wondering about is capping at level 1k (new system)...

Ian • 13 May 2020, 2:21 PM

@sodabearjess missed that area. "My Creatures" has now been updated with the new level calculation.

doctorwho • 13 May 2020, 2:22 PM

Edit: just saw Ian's update, that makes sense. 😊 Thank you guys ❤️

Ian • 13 May 2020, 2:22 PM

Player Guide has now been updated with "Level 20" to indicate immortality.

Ian • 13 May 2020, 2:23 PM

@jlya2 yep! Level leaderboards unaffected. Highest average stats will take the top spots still. People can still compete here.

Ian • 13 May 2020, 2:23 PM

@sinthr yeah. What you're suggesting is essentially the same as what we just did. Except we capped and determined the magic number to be 1000 instead of 100.

decay • 13 May 2020, 2:25 PM

I actually really like this update, makes creature levels look so much more neat and tidy! (: Hope this helps with Egg Cave's expenses as well 😋

dafni • 13 May 2020, 2:25 PM

Honestly, I like it! Gives extra white space in the cove, looking more clean, and it's easier to see the names of the creatures ^^

Ian • 13 May 2020, 2:27 PM

@decay @dafni thanks for the positive feedback. In a world of internet rage at the slightest change, I appreciate you embracing the new perspective and seeing the bright side. ❤️

Ian • 13 May 2020, 2:27 PM

A note about how level leaderboard rankings work has been added to that leaderboard page. 😸

decay • 13 May 2020, 2:30 PM

@ian It's nice to get positive feedback for my positive feedback XD Thank you as well! We're all wishing the best for Eggcave!

chapus • 13 May 2020, 2:34 PM

Oh, a lovely update!! I like this cause sometimes the weird L would appear when the numbers got rlly high and it's always bothered me a bit. It'll take some getting used to for sure, but before we know it, it'll be normal for us LOL

chapus • 13 May 2020, 2:35 PM

Definitely makes for cleaner and shorter numbers that are easier for the eyes LOL. And like @sinthr said, it's sort of like Pokemon where the levels are capped. Makes me wanna reach the max level now LOL

pwuffy • 13 May 2020, 2:37 PM

@chapus thats how i feel too XD i'm like "oh how cool would it be to have a full cove of level 1000s!" thats a lot of work though... but one day i'll get there maybe XD

sandara • 13 May 2020, 2:37 PM

Mine is already updated on my profile, it's strange for now, but is easier to see the level😊

jlya • 13 May 2020, 2:37 PM

Thank you guys for thinking it through so the only thing changing is the number, not the system. We're sensitive to change here but I hope you know we appreciate all you do. ❤️

chapus • 13 May 2020, 2:39 PM

As always, thank you for all your hard work guys!! ❤️ You guys do a lot for us and you deserve a medal for all your hard work lol. Keep the good stuff coming! 😊

sandara • 13 May 2020, 2:40 PM

@chapus @pwuffy A new impossible mission, get all the creatures to level 1000 XD

chapus • 13 May 2020, 2:40 PM

@pwuffy Oh god yeah aha xD My highest level is 268... still got a long way to go LOL

pouncessoftly • 13 May 2020, 2:47 PM

I agree it will take some getting used to, but I think it will be cleaner looking once we do! With it helping reduce costs for EC thats a fantastic bonus! Save where you can, for sure! ❤️ Thank you for all the hard work everyone does! 😃

mirime • 13 May 2020, 2:49 PM

Nothing changes, practically; at the same time the Staff can work more easily and ensure a better functioning of the Site. Good idea and job, thanks for being so clear. I also like this new profiles' "cleaner" view. It will just take a bit to adjust for many of us ^^

ajinkura • 13 May 2020, 2:51 PM

From the programmer's point of view, I totally understand the need for those changes. I hope nothing will break the next days. :< Also HUGE thanks and a lot of love to your techs. ❤️ (and a lot of virtual coffee 😃 )

Ian • 13 May 2020, 2:51 PM

@sandara haha yeah! Level 1000 means that the average stats reach 100,000. A pretty huge accomplishment now.

Ian • 13 May 2020, 2:51 PM

@ajinkura thanks so much! that means a lot. generating all of these images and keeping them up to date (as you've seen over the last couple of days) is actually a pretty big deal around here. 😋

ssrhetoric • 13 May 2020, 2:55 PM

I really like this. Smaller numbers on average means greater psychological impact when those numbers increase.

lucas • 13 May 2020, 2:55 PM

cool 😊

anabanana • 13 May 2020, 2:56 PM

I like this change! Levels as high as a few million did sound a biiit too excessive in my opinion 😃 It'll look neater with a level cap.
