We have updated the way that creature levels will be displayed at Egg Cave. In short, we are (1) taking existing creature levels and dividing them by 100 and (2) capping them at Level 1000. Creatures are now immortal at Level 20 instead of Level 2000. (This is because 2000 divided by 100 equals 20.)
We want to strongly stress that—in essence—nothing has changed with your creature levels, immortality, or how hunger works. We're simply chopping off the last two digits, making them appear "lower", but in terms of functionality they're still the same.
There are a few reasons.
Aging creatures: we're introducing a cap at level 1000 because there are some aging creatures that have amassed very impressive stats. Some of the highest stats creatures are now "level six million" is which is excessive and unnecessary. As levels continue to increase, they'd eventually be cut off your images.
Our servers need to be re-caching your images less: in truth, this is the biggest reason for this change. Dynamically building and updating your creature images is one of the most expensive operations, hardware wise, that we do at Egg Cave. Essentially, we need to reprint the level on your creature images (i.e. re-cache) less frequently than we currently do.
Nothing. Please allow up to 3 days for us to fully re-cache and reprint your new creature levels. Everybody's creature images are queued to be updated automatically. Many people will see the updated creature level within the next 24 hours.
When it comes down to the math, your creature level is exactly the same as before. The creature immortality level—now level 20—has been adjusted alongside it. We've simply updated the way that your level will be displayed. The functionality of the game is exactly the same. It takes the same amount of work to achieve a now Level 20 creature as it did a Level 2000 creature. The only difference is the number of zeros.
It will take time for everybody to adjust to understanding what the new levels "mean." Level 20 which has historically been associated with a brand-new creature will now represent a mature creature.
We're including another blurb at the bottom of this blog post in case you've panic-read everything and skipped the details. Creatures are now immortal at Level 20. We promise, even if that feels like a newbie creature level!
No. This is because the only thing that's changed is the way that creature levels are displaying. The functionality of the game is the same. Immortality dates will now be logged at Level 20.
Levels are now capped at 1000 but the highest average stats from creatures still determine the spots among the Level 1000 creatures. In other words: the level leaderboard rankings are exactly the same as before. If you get more stats than another Level 1000 creature, you can still knock them off this leaderboard.
A creature's level is the average of its three stats (views plus clicks plus feeds divided by 3) divided by 100. The "divided by 100" is the new part. If you want to get technical, here's the math equation:
Creature Level = ceil((Views + Clicks + Feeds) / 3) / 100)where ceil means round up

But even though the stats are unchanged, I see why some people don't like it. What about displaying the level as text, instead of putting it inside an image? This way you won't need to recache it at all, only when the creature hatches/evolves or the travel is changed.

I'm excited for the cleaner look 😊 It'll take a little getting used to, but I'm sure it'll feel natural to all of us in a couple of weeks.
Ian • 13 May 2020, 3:15 PM
@ssrhetoric 100% THIS! so glad you're seeing this ❤️
bubblez • 13 May 2020, 3:19 PM
Interesting. It's gonna take time getting used to the new numbers😋 Thank you for all the hard work put into this site❤️
iris1929578 • 13 May 2020, 3:23 PM
Wow, this is going to be hard to get used to. I did enjoy seeing huge numbers for levels though, rip
raccoon • 13 May 2020, 3:25 PM
This... is going to be an adjustment. Lol. I mean, I can understand it, and I don't hate it, but it's so *weird* to see my immortals at level 20 hahaha
prairie • 13 May 2020, 3:33 PM
It's over 9000!!!! (some of the creature levels where nuts lmao) It's gonna please my eyes to not see the LV number go under the star when people got it on the bottom right corner next to the names. :v
rabbitwanter • 13 May 2020, 3:54 PM
❤️
rypnami • 13 May 2020, 4:02 PM
a lot of my creatures are not immortal anymore. >☹️ what the heck? like I appreciate it because I;m not on all the time so lowering the level to become immortal is great but creatures that were previously immortal no longer have "immortal on" so I have to do this all over again
Orderedchaos • 13 May 2020, 4:10 PM
@rypnami Any creature that was immortal before (level 2000) will still be immortal now. You still need the same number of combined stats we're just doing slightly differing math with those stats.
Ian • 13 May 2020, 4:13 PM
@rypnami your creatures that were immortal prior to this change are still immortal. Absolutely nothing has changed with immortality. If there's an error with an "Immortal At" date on one of your creature profiles, please submit a ticket.
anarchy • 13 May 2020, 4:19 PM
Oh phew I saw all my creatures had tiny levels and got scared for a moment lol. Small levels also look a lot nicer aesthetically than huge 5-6 digit levels so I'm cool with this.
yogurt • 13 May 2020, 4:24 PM
the 2000 levels loooked so cool tho haha
poe • 13 May 2020, 4:46 PM
I guess it pays off to not be paying attention because I've now read this post before finding anything to panic over lol That's very interesting to learn about the reason for the change.
stefrawr • 13 May 2020, 5:02 PM
interesting
moonweaver • 13 May 2020, 6:01 PM
Oooh this is new 😱 I kinda like it 😃 Time to update immortalizing thread...
nut • 13 May 2020, 7:04 PM
it kind of makes it hard to tell how close a creature is getting to level 20 though. like it still took a long time to get from 1900 to 2000 so they'd just stay at 19 the whole time?
brad • 13 May 2020, 7:27 PM
Why are people having such a hard time understanding this? o.o This is such a minimal thing. Nothing changed. It's much better to quickly look and see the level too. Without having to try and figure out the long, comma-less numbers.
chaotictreat • 13 May 2020, 7:33 PM
Oh my gosh it's gonna be so weird and hard to get used to! But I totally get why it's been changed 😊
minnie298a • 13 May 2020, 7:55 PM
Like others, it's going to take me a little getting used to, particularly when sorting creatures for the XC. A matter of remembering the new way to read the stats. It's a small price to pay for a better running site. However, level 1000 now seems like a mega goal to reach for.
wavypavy • 13 May 2020, 8:17 PM
I think I quite like this, it gives me a much greater appreciation for the levels on my immortal creatures rather than just a big number. The less processing needed to update them must be great for the tech side, so that's good too!
mrsgiggles • 13 May 2020, 8:25 PM
@Ian I like this, but it also triggers my OCD to have all my creatures in THREE COVES to be 1,000. No no no - that way lies madness, no no no...
seraph • 13 May 2020, 9:24 PM
phew, good thing I gave up gaining stats LONG ago
foxbit • 13 May 2020, 9:48 PM
My brain will take a long time getting accustomed to this since I've been playing this game for nearly 7 years (on my original account, that is), but this is nice!
sorrow • 13 May 2020, 9:52 PM
interesting! its gonna take a little getting used to, but it'll be much better in the long run!
cheetah • 13 May 2020, 10:19 PM
I think I actually like the look of the small numbers better. It makes the creature's name stand out more. 😊 Sounds like great news for the servers as well. Cool!
saturna • 14 May 2020, 12:08 AM
It's cool that you're doing this to make the site run smoother, and I personally have no problems with it ^^
kayuubii • 14 May 2020, 3:34 AM
I dont really like this, i was excited to achieve a high level where the word ‘Level’ doesnt fit so its just ‘L’ well there goes my dreams xD
asbe • 14 May 2020, 4:38 AM
Honestly, I don't care as long as they evolve 😃
vos • 14 May 2020, 4:52 AM
Whether it's 2000 or 20, when it takes a year of regular clicking to immortalize a pet, it's ridiculously too long!
froot • 14 May 2020, 10:03 AM
I like this!! Everything about this new update is great, except the one thing I'm not particularly thrilled about is the level cap :/ I get why you guys would wanna do that, but hey, you gotta admit, it's super cool seeing those crazy high numbers OuO @galaxyleopard agreed haha
kota • 14 May 2020, 11:41 AM
Thanks for this, I like the neater, smaller numbers
Ian • 14 May 2020, 11:59 AM
@kota awesome!
kaplooosh • 14 May 2020, 2:11 PM
i like this because i never looked at the last couple numbers anyway lol
subie • 14 May 2020, 4:05 PM
Really like this new change! Looks simpler and cleaner. I prefer placing my stars on my creatures on the bottom right near the level. It looked horrible when the long numbers went into the star. Great change. 😊
dragonnn • 14 May 2020, 4:47 PM
Thanks for explaining this in detail!
idol • 14 May 2020, 6:43 PM
I read everything and understood but didn't fully get it at first then went to my profile I loved how clean and beautiful it was just that simple difference completely change the way my profile looks I love it thank you eggcave staff! 😊
ravensing • 14 May 2020, 10:22 PM
Well...this simplifies things. Hopefully this helps Eggcave Staff by a lot!
satelliitti • 14 May 2020, 11:38 PM
I've never paid attention to creature levels/stats/etc. before, so this is fine with me! Thanks for the change and I hope everyone can adapt soon because the reasons listed just make sense. 😊
jeanne • 23 May 2020, 2:49 AM
@Ian - hi I got a notice that a pet (https://eggcave.com/egg/2448226) is immortal now but it doesn't have level 20 or the needed amount of views+clicks+feeds?
Ian • 23 May 2020, 12:01 PM
@jeanne probably needed a minute or two for the image to update. Everything is looking correct here.
mysticgirl916 • 25 May 2020, 2:56 PM
Why don't Mouflons become immortal? I raised mine to over level 2000 prior to the level change
jeanne • 26 May 2020, 2:51 AM
@Ian hi The image is ok it's the calculation that is off - I calculated it to level 19.05 when the creature profile said level 20
