Mythical Creature Market (Roleplay)

The port city of Diori was famous for many things. Its white sand beaches were an attraction for vacationers and fisherman alike, with their warm, clear waters and abundant fish. The architecture and masonry of its majestic buildings were mimicked even in lands far beyond. However, one thing over all the others placed Diori as the beating heart of the eastern kingdom: its open air market.

Once upon a time, produce farmers had cleared a small portion of the chaparral to vend their goods. Over time, different merchants joined them. Sellers of cloth, jewelry, fish, livestock, pottery, and any other item man could hope to buy amassed in this well-worn field. The market changed gradually at first. One day, a man would appear with a cage of brownies for sale. (He offered them as housework assistants, pledging that they needed only a dish of milk as payment for their work.) Another day, a man would appear with a young gryphon he had caught feasting on his sheep. These uncommon goods began to appear with ever-increasing regularity, until an entire portion of the market was reserved for their sale and purchase. This became the famed Diori Mythical Creature Market.

Some make an entire trade from the sale of mythical creatures. Others simply happen upon them out of luck. Either way, there is no short supply of magic for sale--and no short supply of potential buyers, either.

A note on characters:

Your character(s) will either be buyers or vendors.

Buyers will be at the market to purchase a mythical creature. Nearly every buyer will have a different reason for their purchase, but keep in mind that most of these creatures are potentially dangerous and do not make good pets. Children are not allowed to go off on their own and purchase these kind of creatures. Some example reasons for wanting a creature are: help with farming (plow animals, etc.), for good luck/superstition, for use in potions, for heating, and as a status symbol/demonstration of wealth. Most of these creatures cost quite a pretty penny. This is not a market for the poor.

Vendors come from every walk of life, and each of the creatures for sale is something different. Vendors are to supervise both their stand and their wares, and handle any transactions. They set the prices, which the buyer can often haggle with. Creatures are required to be appropriately restrained. Common methods of restraint are cages or shackles, though for the particularly dangerous creatures, magical enhancements are needed. Roleplayers who wish to play creatures must also play the creature's vendor. Creatures range from animal-like to human-like intelligence, though please keep their species in mind when determining their actions.

A note on the setting:

The season is mid-autumn. The time of day is mid-morning, when market traffic is at a high amount. The weather is clear, with a glorious blue sky to look upon, but quite brisk. Due to the crisp air and the persistent breeze, most market patrons are dressed for cold weather.

The market grounds are dirt, with well-worn paths crossing the stalls. The paths are wide enough for the passage of an ox cart.

Rules:

-Please try your best to write with good mechanics.
-All posts must be in third person, past tense.
-No controlling characters other than your own.
-No disproportionately powerful characters.
-No Mary Sue or Gary Stu characters. If your character is a Sue, I will not hesitate to prevent you from joining this.
-In that same vein, no melodramatic characters with sob story pasts. Please use discretion when forming histories for characters.
-Posts must contain enough content. If a proper reply cannot be generated in response to your post, you will be asked to revise it. (In essence, no super short replies.)
-The technology of the roleplay is medieval-era. Please do not attempt to use modern technology. (This includes blue jeans, refrigerators and indoor plumbing, among many other things. Look it up if you're not sure.)
-To join this roleplay, you must first ask nicely to join. In this same post, you may include your character form.

Important:
If you play a creature, you also have to play the person selling that creature.
No more unicorns for now.

Gender: Female
Age: 16
Appearance: Curly blonde hair, with flowers nestled in a few of the folds. Typically wears a golden dress with a matching hood, however, occasionally substitutes this with a midnight blue satin gown, hood to match.
Personality: Marigold is a very fashionable young woman, having been raised to conform to the ideals of the 'perfect woman'. Because of this, she is very vain, and is constantly worried about her appearance. Although she is usually very sweet (once again conforming to the status of 'perfect lady'), Marigold constantly requires protection, usually by a male.
Reason for purchase: Marigold has heard of the luck brought by these creatures, and hopes that buying one may increase her beauty.

Her body is hidden in a sea of green magician robes, which is the exact same color as her hair. Her hands are slender but callused. Wears leather sandals. Carries a hardwood staff.
Personality: Serious to the point of bitterness, she places her practice of magic over anything else in her life. An introvert, she prefers quiet and solitude to the bustle of a large crowd. Nonaggressive by nature. Easily irked, but rarely responds other than through caustic remarks. Prefers listening to talking.
Other: The green hair is a result of her failed attempt to dye a new set of robes using magic. She is a nature witch.

Name: Felix (as given to him by the vendor)
Gender: Male
Age: Young adult
Species: Sunbird
Appearance: About 30 centimeters tall, parrot-like in appearance. Iridescent green head, with a feather crest reminiscent of a Galah Cockatoo. Black beak, inquisitive black eyes. A thin rim of purple feathers marks the divide between its head and its body. Sunny yellow breast, with a fuzzy streak of red down the middle of its chest and stomach. Rosy wings.
Personality: Curious, vocal, sociable
Asking price: 30 gold
Abilities: The woodland elves of its region believe it brings good luck.

While I love the rules and how you structure your roleplays, I don't feel I'd have too much to say in this one. Maybe it's just my lack of sleep talking.

But please do ping me every time you make a roleplay! I love your style.

Unfortunately, I do not know any one to ping as most of the roleplayers I know wouldn't be able to follow the rules.


I'm not telling you to change the rules. In fact, I agree completely! Sob stories are the worst. They drive me insane.

I'm just letting you know I don't know anyone that could follow the rules, aside from Celeste whom it looks like has already joined. (I hope I have not offended anyone I have roleplayed with. Not my intentions.)

If I do come across someone else, I'll make sure to ping.

Normally I wouldn't include a note about sob story characters, but I felt like something needed to be said on this particular roleplay. There's always that one girl (it's always a girl) who decides she wants to play a mythical creature who was orphaned in a freak accident and then captured by a cruel seller, etc. That same character will mope and sulk and whine about her miserable history to anybody who passes by. Those people drive me crazy. :I

It does drive me crazy. There's also always (in the roleplays I make) the 'tough' girl that's been abused or had her parents die and had to live on the streets or whatever. And when people demand what her problem is she goes on about the sob story.

It's cool to have a tough character. But you can do that without dead parents/abuse, ect.

I may join later! I think it is because I'm tired right now and my brain is foggy. I'd love to post long posts. Though, I usually end up needing to switch over to my side to finish my posts, and have even had to switch back to my main... Mine can get quite long when I am given a detailed post to respond, too. Is there such thing as too long? Lol!

My personal favorites are the characters who have raised themselves on the streets after being abandoned or orphaned. I ask myself: could you possibly get any more unrealistic? I'd like to ask those roleplayers how long they think they'd survive on their own at that age, haha.

Tough characters are okay. There are thick-skinned people out there. But most of the time, people's personalities will come through whether or not they've suffered any kind of tragedy.

There certainly is such a thing as too long. If I get over 3000 characters in response to the typical EggCave post, I generally tell myself to calm down and edit some stuff out. X3 Well, once you've had some sleep, please reassess. I'd love to have you here.
