@taffy789 yes, they stay in a somewhat castle-like structure outside the wall, and they get food while they stay there 😉

Annie walked up to the counter. "Hey, Cierra." she greeted the barista who was at the counter at the moment. "Hi, Annie! How's it going?" she asked. "Good. The regular?" "Certainly." Cierra wasn't the best barista, but she was very friendly and liked to talk to Annie. "Here ya go," Cierra said and handed Annie a latte. "Don't forget..." Annie whispered. "Oh yeah!" Cierra drizzled on the chocolate syrup and Annie sat down at a table.

Aibileen asks the nice barista for a chai tea latte, extra cinnamon. "Thank you! Have a good day." Aibee says as she takes her cup and walks over to the window seats.

Annie sipped her latte and looked at the bulletin board on the wall. "WANTED: PROTECTORS. JOIN NOW FOR FREE HOUSING AND FOOD!" Annie shivered. Who would ever want to join the Protectors? Annie looked back down and drank the rest of her latte.

Annie suddenly decided she wanted one of those cookie-like-thingies they have behind the counter, so she walked back up. "Um, excuse me?" she asked the barista.

Aibileen sipped her tea cautiously, not wanting to have a burnt tongue. She avoided any advertisements proclaiming nice stuff for new Protecters. Her father and mother had been Protecters, Minny told her, that's how they died. She also told Aibee that she had to keep it a secret, even if it means lying. Aibileen had been mortified at that and how her parents died, being raised under Minny's truthfulness, protection and honesty. Aibee, honestly, hadn't cared much for her parents.. why care for someone you barely know? She was more sad at the fact that her City would send off people simply to be killed.

Halo retrieved a biscotti and set the plate on the counter. "Here's your change. Anything else?" Halo heard herself say, handing back the change.

Annie left the cafe and sat on the edge of a fountain in a garden. She unwrapped her biscotti and nibbled it, while watching the clouds go by. A messenger pigeon fluttered by. "I wonder where it's going..." she mumbled to herself.

"Sweetie. Take a break, swing by the Cafe, do whatever you want. Today is your sister's day." Scarlet's mom told her. "Mmmkay. Thanks Mom. I'll bring you guys back your usuals." Scarlet said and scampered off to get her skateboard and ride off to the Cafe.

Halo's break finally arrived, and she bought muffin and went outside to eat it. Finding her favorite bench taken, she sighed and tossed a coin into the fountain. "For luck," she murmured.

@trish heh, toasters are simple. Computers are not 😋 there's just not enough factory workers.

Scarlet whizzed down the block on her skateboard. She stopped at a post, reading a Protectors Wanted poster. Suddenly two firm hands were placed on her shoulders. She turned around and smiled. "Hi Greg." Scarlet laughed. "Hey there Passer." Greg flashed a crooked smile, but it faded once he laid his eyes on the poster. Greg gritted his teeth. "Never, Scarlet. NEVER."

Annie watched a boy run past quickly. "What's wrong?" she asked innocently. "The..the Umbra Res are appearing more and more! They're..drafting us into...the Protectors!" he huffed between panting, and kept running. Annie flew down the street and ran to her house.

@trish well, actually there are SOME electronics, like buses and computers, but they are reseved for the army only.
@skylark they will meet each other at the Protector HQ

Annie opened the door. Her mother was staring at her with a torn envelope. There were tears in her eyes. "Oh, Annie....Annie, why...no.." her mother sobbed. Annie picked up the letter. It was from the City council.

"Ms. Annie Deirre,

We must inform you that you have been drafted into the Protectors, the proud soldiers who guard the City. As you may know, the population of the Umbra Res has increased latly, so we must double our soldier count. You will be given adequate housing and food at the HQ castle, which is approximately two (2) miles from the City gate. In five days time, we will send a representative to escort you to the City gate where a bus (mass transportation vehicle) will await you. Please bring appropriate clothing and optionally an item to remind you of your home.

May the City always prosper,

Edward Williams,
Head of Council."

Annie dropped the letter and ran to her mother. "Mother! Oh, mother!" She cried.

At the end of the day, Halo had just changed out of her uniform when a knock on her bedroom door startled her. It was the cafe manager, bearing a small envelope which he was waving around angrily, followed by a teary Lavender.
"What did you do, huh?" He yelled at Halo, who looked bewildered. "How am I to get another new barista in time?"
He threw the envelope at Halo and stormed off, leaving her with Lav.
With trembling fingers Halo opened the envelope and a letter fell to the floor. She didn't need to read it. It was identical to the one her brother had got.
