@randomkitty17 - D: way to make mine look awful x.x 😋
(don't mind me if i 'borrow' your letter 😃)

Aibee nervously looks at Minny then back to the letter. "Well, I'll read it out loud, I guess."

'Miss Aibleen Ros-'
"Oh my gosh, they would totally spell my name wrong. Ugh."

'Miss Aibleen Ross,

We must inform you that you have been drafted into the Protectors, the proud soldiers who guard the City. As you may know, the population of the Umbra Res has increased lately, so we must double our soldier count. You will be given housing and food at the HQ castle, which is approximately two (2) miles from the City gate. In five days time, we will send a representative to escort you to the City gate where a bus (mass transportation vehicle) will await you. Please bring appropriate clothing and optionally an item to remind you of your home.

May the City always prosper,

Edward Williams,
Head of Council.'

Aibee looked up from the *obviously* programmed letter. "Wow, you can see the shadowing on the letters! It looks SO neat! Minny, what does 'drafted' mean?" A drop of tear rolled down Minny's cheek. "Wait, why are you crying..?"

Scarlet was already home when she got her letter. Her mother was in tears. Her brother and sister were in tears. "How bad can it be?" Scarlet tried to lighten up the mood. Her mom wasn't one bit recovered, so Scarlet's uncle opened his bedroom door, and in his hand was a delicate black box. "Bring this, please, Scarlet."

They handed Dusk a letter, and told him where to come tomorrow.

Annie shoved her face into a pillow. The one thought echoes back from a lesson her teacher had given her. "Being in the Protectors means certain death..." Annie moaned and tried to erase the thought from her head. "Certain death, certain death, certain death...." was all she could hear. "CERTAIN DEATH, CERTAIN DEATH..." "SHUT UP!!!!" she screamed at the top of her lungs, a rare outburst from a usually timid girl. She dragged out a suitcase and started packing. Her warmest jacket, her best running shoes, a camouflage shirt, and lastly, a porcelain bird figurine and a bronze compass. They were gifts from her parents. Annie stopped crying. "I..I'm going to survive! I'm going to come home!" she sniffled and clenched her fist.
And that pact was to become her light at the end of the tunnel.

(In the actual book I'm writing, she has to leave her childhood friend to live in the Protector Army. 😋 just a lil tidbit)

Aibee was still in shock, "Minny, I could die like my parents! I don't want to die! I'm only 15!" Minny sighed, "I know dear, but this you must remember...
Never lose faith, always keep your head up.
Never let them beat you down, get right back up.
Never lie, not even a white one, it'll make things worse.
And lastly, never forget that I love you.
That, your parents didn't do, so.." Minny shrugged.
Aibee had to giggle, even though she was crying. "I think that suffices as 'an item to remind you of your home'."
"No way! That's just a pact. Pfft, I got something way better..." Minny hands Aibee a little box, and inside was a diamond locket that had a picture of Minny and Gramps on it with matching diamond earrings and a matching diamond bracelet. Also, a bookmark too. "Though I can tell which one you like the most..." Minny smiled as Aibileen took out the gorgeous bookmark. "Oh my gosh, this is beautiful Minny! You shouldn't've!" she cried as she hugged Minny. It was a loving moment.

Evy dragged herself into the kitchen, grabbing what they had left in the cabinets: 2 slices of bread and an orange. her father was usually at the farm during the early hours, and should be coming back with money this afternoon. she waled outside to watch the sun come up between the trees, and noticed a paper tacked to one. "great." she thought. "protectors die all the time, and new ones come just knowing theyr next."

as she was about to step back inside, something else caught her eye. Evy bent down and picked up a small envelope. she didnt get these often, so it must be something important. her heart stopped. she couldnt breathe. Evy crunched up the letter and ran back inside.

Annie zipped up the suitcase and went to bed. "Five days..." she thought and drifted off to sleep.

Halo had to comfort Lavender more than herself. She made her tea. It was funny, because she should have seen this coming, but had not for one moment expected it. She released her hair from its tight ponytail and stared in the mirror for a minute. 5 days.....

Annie left her suitcase by the door and went downstairs. "Mother, is there a sign that shows the names of everyone who's been drafted?" she asked, her voice wavering. "Um, let me check." he mother responded and looked at a newspaper on the table. "Yes, there are lists in the cafe and in the City square." her mother said. "Thank you, mother. I'm going to see who else is coming." Annie said. Her mother started crying. "Please, be safe." she sobbed. "I'm not leaving just yet, mother. Five days." Annie said, as if mesmerized by the words. Her mother kissed her cheek. "I'll be back soon." Annie said, and rushed out the door. She headed to the cafe. A muffin and a latte would cheer her up, and then she could look at the list.

Halo sat by the fountain again, her eyes closed to keep back the tears. Lavender had convinced the manager to let her stay, and he had found a replacement suspiciously fast, so she didn't have to work either. She might as well go shopping and spend her savings- she wouldn't be needing them.

Dusk stole some more food from various shops. He didn't get drafted, he'd signed up.
He'd met those creatures once before...... He felt the scar on his neck, remembering.

(oh, and by the way, there's a small hole in the wall just big enough to crawl through, you're wondering how some people escape the City 😋)

Annie ate her muffin in slince. After she had told Cierra that she was drafted, Cierra broke into tears. Cierra sat next to her at the table and kept crying. "I'll come back, I know it. Don't cry, Cierra." Annie soothed her friend. "Eat some of my muffin." she said and handed it to her friend. "No, but..but what if you die?!" Cierra wailed. "Don't say that! No, that just makes it worse....I'll come back. That's a promise." she said.

Aibileen packed, and biked over to the Cafe, hoping a chai tea will warm her up from the chilly morning air.

Annie let Cierra eat the muffin and calm down while Annie walked up to the list onto bulletin board. She touched the thick paper and looked at the list. She found her name. "Annie Deirre." she looked at some of the other names. "Aibileen Ross. Halo Celestare. Dusk Alley. Evy Roune...." Wow. So many people on the list were the same age as she was. Annie trembled and went back to sit with Cierra, who had stopped crying, but was still shaking.

Evy sat up, looking down at the tearstained pillow. she had to tell her father. five days...

she knew how to get to the farm. she would every so often to help feed. as she turned the last corner, she dreaded what she would have to tell him. his brother died a protector. his wife, Evy's mother died 7 years ago, from an incurable disease. Evy was all he had left. and he may never see her again.

Evy spotted him feeding cattle near the barn. she watched him smile and wave at her, but stopped, confused, when she did not smile back." good morning." he said. "is something wrong?

"i have to leave." she said.

Halo spent most of her days face down on her pillow. She knew NOTHING of fighting. ALL she knew was coffee. Ah well. She'd learn or it would cease to matter anyway.

(fourth day unless anyone Objects 😋)

Annie woke up feeling dreadful as usual. She stared at the suitcase in the corner of the room, knowing the terrible day was soon to come. She gazed out the window and stared at the streets of the City. "At least I'll be fighting for the City I love." Annie sighed to herself. She descended the stairs and got ready to go jogging around the city

when she finished packing, Evy lied down on her bed and stared up at the cieling. pushing aside the sad thoughts, she tried to think positive. it would be an adventure. she would get to see plants and animals she had never seen before.

outside the wall.

where the umbra res lurk.

where every step could get her closer to death.

Still fourth day p'haps? 😋

Scarlet tried to open the box. Fail. She looked at her uncle. He shook his head. "What?" Scarlet cocked her head.
"Just wait for the right moment Scarlet." her uncle chuckled, showing his dimples.
"It's a dark time." Scarlet's mom put in.
"Not helping." Ren & Hannah told their mom.
"Packing time." Scarlet sighed.

Dusk didn't care he was being shipped out today.
He didn't care he was facing death.
All he cared about at this point was a nice, warm bed, with food he didn't have to STEAL.
The Umbre Res......
Dusk touched the scars on his neck. He had seen the outside before.
And the Umbre Res.
In fact, it was a Protector that rescued him when he was lying outside the walls of the city, his throat wrecked.....
He pushed the thoughts from his head.
