You'll Use Your Email & Password To Sign In Soon

April 14, 2026 at 6:00 PM

Sign In Changes Coming Soon

For security, in a few weeks, you will begin signing in with your email address (instead of username) to access your Egg Cave accounts. Your passwords will remain the same.

Why now? Well, the web mostly abandoned signing in with public-facing usernames a long time ago for security. It's a security risk that an attacker already knows your public-facing username. Egg Cave's log in form has seen an uptick in attacks lately and switching to signing with your email address is a best standard practice in 2026.

Take a moment to secure all of your main and side accounts, along with their email addresses. You simply need to know which email is associated with which account very soon.

Clarification

The only change here is this: if I am used to signing in with Ian and my password on the log in form, the only change is that I'll begin using [email protected] and password to sign in on the login form. The email you use is the one associated with that individual account.

There will be no "magic sign in" links where you're required to check your email to sign in. There will be no extra verification steps. The only thing that changes is what you enter on the log in form.

You simply need to know the emails associated with your main and side accounts instead of the usernames themselves now. This protects all of your accounts because your email is private on Egg Cave.

Pixel Font Updated

The pixel font located on your creature images has been updated to a newer and crisper-looking pixel font face. We hope that you like it! Please allow a few days for all creature images to be updated.

me over here freaking out about the switch from phone number to email for Monthly verification... then realizing it's the perfect stick to poke me into checking my old main email more often like I've been meaning to. >.<

Ian • 14 Apr 2026, 11:15 PM

@sorrow nope, your email stays the same every month. It's just that to verify for the Monthly Challenge, you'd click a verification link to your main account's email address (that doesn't change). You do not have to change your email ever for any reason.

jarsha • 14 Apr 2026, 11:17 PM

@snowywinter hopefully it’s not full of spam lol

Ian • 14 Apr 2026, 11:17 PM

@snowywinter yep, only the email and password to sign in! Nothing else changes.

sorrow • 14 Apr 2026, 11:19 PM

@ian ok, so i do need to get my email on this (main) account changed to my main email so that i can have access to the monthly challenge. i have no access to my emails that i used except for my newest side. just wanna be completely clear, i hope im not making this more confusing

Ian • 14 Apr 2026, 11:22 PM

@sorrow I'd recommend setting your main account email to your personal and/or most frequently checked email in preparation.

Ian • 14 Apr 2026, 11:24 PM

Main email for main accounts, side emails for side accounts, haha.

snowywinter • 14 Apr 2026, 11:25 PM

@jarsha It was made for the purpose of filtering out spam >.< LoL. It's full of newsletters and advertisings housemate & I signed up for. Friends & family used to email us at it too. Back when people emailed.

sorrow • 14 Apr 2026, 11:28 PM

@ian okay, thank you for the clarification. thats why i was asking about verification emails. so i have to make new emails anyway for my side accounts since i cannot change the emails without clicking a link to verify the email change haha. added to my to-do list lmao

Ian • 14 Apr 2026, 11:35 PM

@sorrow yep, a bit of a hassle but once it's dialed in you'll be set for good

Ian • 14 Apr 2026, 11:35 PM

@snowywinter haha yeah. Nothing wrong with using one of those newsletter-style emails for a side account. Definitely use your main email for your main account tho.

snowwall • 14 Apr 2026, 11:52 PM

@heatherm19 re: "There are so many free email providers online" - not that I know of. They're "free" is "free as in money", but they ask for a PHONE NUMBER! GMX? Phone number since recently. Gmail? They begin with "recovery email OR phone" and end with "scan this QR code".

Ian • 14 Apr 2026, 11:58 PM

@snowwall yeah this is all for security now, and to combat abuse. Most first-tier email providers are asking you to prove that you're a human being.

snowwall • 14 Apr 2026, 11:58 PM

Oftentimes, usernames repeat less than e-mails across various services. So, I'm not sure about extra security from cross-site leaks. I am sure I don't remember the e-mails for all my sides nearly as well as their usernames...

Ian • 14 Apr 2026, 11:59 PM

@snowwall simply log in to all of those side accounts now and grab the emails from the Email Preferences page referenced in this blog post. Just write em down to keep all of your EC accounts straight.

heatherm19 • 14 Apr 2026, 11:59 PM

@Ian I'm using Microsoft Edge, newest version I believe. ... SOOOO excited to hear the monthly verification process will be updated!! I've had no issues with it (after having to change my phone number awhile back) but I think verifying via email is a much more inclusive system.

Ian • 14 Apr 2026, 11:59 PM

@heatherm19 I agree 😊

Ian • 15 Apr 2026, 12:02 AM

@heatherm19 what kind of device? Sometimes OLED monitors add those weird artifacts to text, mine does the same actually but the text itself is crisper. Font smoothing tech is weird these days

snowwall • 15 Apr 2026, 12:03 AM

@Ian, a phone/number does not prove I am human and above board. Not having one/keeping it secret does not prove I'm not. It's the very fact I am a poor, honest, introverted human that gives me trouble.. Were I not, I'd easily buy/steal/scam myself dozens of 'em!

heatherm19 • 15 Apr 2026, 12:08 AM

@snowwall Seriously? Ugh I really hate the switch to 'must have phone number!', in my experience way more people have access to, say, a recovery email, instead of a consistent text-enabled phone. --

heatherm19 • 15 Apr 2026, 12:08 AM

--(someone earlier mentioned proton mail, I'm using it for *two* sides because you can have multiple free emails connecting to a main email, and afaik I've never put in a phone number for it)

Ian • 15 Apr 2026, 12:12 AM

@heatherm19 you can still use most without a phone number but they really press it on you to add one for recovery

snowwall • 15 Apr 2026, 12:22 AM

Biggest problem - if my UUID in a site's database is my e-mail, I am suddenly chained to my provider and its e-mail. Which, suddenly, becomes like biometrics/SSN, which can't be changed if leaked - if ever the site wants to "verify" me, it'll use that e-mail.

w0lfhaley • 15 Apr 2026, 12:24 AM

not a fan of the new font ☹️

snowwall • 15 Apr 2026, 12:27 AM

@heatherm19 Tried to make a youtube recently. First it was happy with a "recovery e-mail", then it wanted me to "scan a QR code to continue". I.e, have a camera- and internet-enabled smartphone + trust them to not read the phone number on it. Couldn't go on at that point

snowwall • 15 Apr 2026, 12:29 AM

@w0lfhaley Not sure which of the font is "new". Had seen multi-coloured pixels merging and letters being unreadable at non-100% scaling, but not sure if it's the new or old font... Which goes to show how rarely I read the names outside the title bar of my browser!

heatherm19 • 15 Apr 2026, 3:23 AM

@Ian afaik I don't have an OLED monitor... I'm using a refurbished Dell Latitude running Windows 10 Pro. You said the font isn't supposed to look like the screenshot I posted, I'm now curious what exactly it is supposed to look like. Anyone else have a screenshot?

tortoise • 15 Apr 2026, 3:26 AM

Although the new font is slightly bigger and clearer, I prefer the old font because it’s more charming and, well, classic Egg Cave. I’m really gonna miss it if this is a permanent change. Also, just wanted to point out that since the font updated-

tortoise • 15 Apr 2026, 3:27 AM

-when you click on a starred creature the star doesn’t appear on their profile. Is this a glitch?

ida92 • 15 Apr 2026, 5:51 AM

I don't like the new font at all, it's not clear, I can hardly read it. ☹️

gngdia • 15 Apr 2026, 5:57 AM

I don't like the new font either, it's too thin.

kataclysm • 15 Apr 2026, 7:44 AM

I don't mind the new font/the aesthetic being worked towards, but given it's being used for names, I do think it needs to be bigger and bolder. Pleased to see security updates finally being made. Is this indicative of more updates coming to eggcave, @Ian?

kataclysm • 15 Apr 2026, 7:45 AM

Maybe even... an update on what happened to galleries...?

pipkitten • 15 Apr 2026, 8:06 AM

Oof, guess I've got some email addresses to update lol

megamisama90 • 15 Apr 2026, 9:36 AM

I don't know if I like the new font but I'll probably get used to it. Someone pointed it out it's hard to read, I agree. I too want to know what happened to galleries...

raitonchidori • 15 Apr 2026, 10:14 AM

I got some time to think about this and I wish it was an April 1st post lol. Seriously, the font bothers me and the email changes are unnecessary for me. What will happen when we lose these emails? All those I had when I first created are now gone. Will I end up losing access?

raitonchidori • 15 Apr 2026, 10:31 AM

@Ian is there a way we vinculate 1 email for the main and sides?

hinokazes • 15 Apr 2026, 11:31 AM

I am not a fan of the new font, I have struggles to read the names of my pets, now... ☹️ it hurt the eyes

jarsha • 15 Apr 2026, 11:44 AM

@raitonchidori if you can still log into those sides now you can update the old emails to new ones that you can write down

galactic_pigeon • 15 Apr 2026, 12:42 PM

Does the new font cut off for anyone else? It does this on my mobile device.

raitonchidori • 15 Apr 2026, 12:53 PM

@jarsha yes. But I only have 2 active e-mails. Will I have to create 2 more e-mails?

jarsha • 15 Apr 2026, 12:55 PM

@raitonchidori I think so, however many side acc you have that you don’t have access to their emails anymore, you’d make that many new emails and link them to those accounts.

raitonchidori • 15 Apr 2026, 12:59 PM

@jarsha so I’ll have to make 2 more e-mails just to eventual login here. Doesn’t seem practical. And what will happen to those who didn’t login for a while and come back after the change, not being able to login and not even knowing their registered emails?

veritaspunk • 15 Apr 2026, 3:26 PM

@raitonchidori @snowwall @Ian I really miss the simplicity of "the old internet". Before Myspace/Facebook normalized using real names. I'm not someone that likes to be tethered to a places out of personal privacy. I certainly don't have multiple e-mails at the ready.

veritaspunk • 15 Apr 2026, 3:27 PM

@Ian What happens if the main e0mail on file is locked out, how will a user of EC verify the links ? That's why a secondary way of contact would be wise I think :-/

myriadium • 15 Apr 2026, 3:46 PM

I really think we should be able to log in on all accounts (and switch in between them!) using one email, but that might be hard to program in or something. logging in using email is fine, but many providers delete inactive email acc's. and since i only use this email to login -

myriadium • 15 Apr 2026, 3:47 PM

- on an Eggcave account, i'm worried that i might get locked out

Ian • 15 Apr 2026, 4:06 PM

@galactic_pigeon send me the profile URL. Images do cut off text but that's not because of the font, it's because of the creature name.

heatherm19 • 15 Apr 2026, 4:29 PM

@myriadium When I first made my sides I was shocked to learn we had to have separate emails for each side, *even* if we verify our sides as connected to our main. I'm not too fussed about the login change, but I do wish we could just use 1 email for all accounts.

pegasasu • 15 Apr 2026, 4:49 PM

Interesting update, but probably for the better at this point...
