James followed behind Kita. He really wasn't sure how deep her involvement ran. He wanted to believe that she was telling him the truth, but with her having disappeared for several weeks and her admittedly vague explanations of what was happening...They arrived at a door. Kita knocked, still visibly irritated."Vladan! Get out here!"@bunnyshadow

@dada_dragon ~~~Vladan made a big show of snuggling under the large mass of warm fur that belonged to Odilia. He dug himself deeper into the bed, before pulling his blanket over his head in an attempt to muffle Kita's screaming."Not now." He muttered under his breath.

Kita opened the door, James following close behind. He didn't ask how she knew where his room was. He wasn't sure how far Kita was involved in this, but he was feeling more and more uncomfortable about it.There was a large lioness perched on the bed, mostly obscuring the man in the bed. James hesitated, but Kita walked up to it, patting it on the head."Vladan, get up. We need to talk." she said, rubbing the lion's head.@bunnyshadow

@dada_dragon ~~~"I thought you never wanted to see me ever again." Vladan muttered as he forced himself up into a sitting position. He opened his tired eyes, and felt the dryness in his mouth due to the dehydration caused by alcohol. The man rubbed his eyes and gave Odilia a few heavy pats on her silky fur before he turned to face the doorway. His eyes landed first on Kita, then on James. "You've made it." He said with a lopsided smile at the sight of the man standing several feet behind Kita. "I'm sorry you have to see me like this, I'm usually..." Vladan trailed off before continuing. "A bit, no a lot more refined than this."

"I didn't. But unfortunately something has come up, so now I'm here..." she said, glaring at him. "But that's what you wanted, right? No matter how many times I leave, you find some way to drag me right back. That's why you hired him, isn't it?"She had half a mind to punch him. How dare he drag James into this...James stood awkwardly in the doorway. He looked back and forth between Vladan and Kita, desperately needing an explanation. Something was happening here, but he was very much out of the loop...@bunnyshadow

@dada_dragon~~~He propped himself up into a sitting position. Vladan ran a hand through his tussled hair, before moving to get out of bed. He swung his legs over the edge, before standing up on the other side."I have no idea what you are talking about." Vladan said nonchalantly. "I needed a healer on my team, and I saw this one at the prison the day Dawn was introduced to you.""I hired him because I needed him. It has nothing to do with you."

Kita frowned, about to say something, but James interrupted her."Sweetie... please..." he said, grabbing her hand. "May I speak with Mr. Vietkov alone for a minute."Kita looked ready to argue, but finally caved, pulling her hand away and glaring at Vladan before closing the door behind herself. James sighed, running his hand through his hair. He could be supportive boyfriend later. Right now, he had to address some things..."I'm curious to know why one minute, I'm completely against you and everything you stand for, and the next, I'm signing my life away." he said, straight-faced. "I'm also curious to know just how Kita got involved with the likes of you..."@bunnyshadow

He continued, but his attempt at a straight face failed miserably as the corners of his lips tilted up into a small smirk."It was a misunderstanding." The young man muttered. "A large one at that. She owed me a favor because she caused an unusually large problem, and until she fixed that, she had been staying the night..." He trailed off with a sly smile. "With me."Vladan cleared his throat. "However, that's not the issue right now.""I wasn't scheduled to meet you until after Dawn has briefed you on why you are here, what you are supposed to be doing, and how I've saved your body from rotting away in that nasty little prison for superpowered folks like you."

Vladan's words hit James hard. Kita couldn't have...His hands balled into fists and he had to restrain himself to keep from punching him on the spot."How DARE you!" he yelled. "Kita would never fall for a filthy snake like you! You know NOTHING about her!"He wished he could fight Vladan right there, but what could he do? Heal him to death?"You can send me back to that prison for all I care. I don't work for people like you. And if you so much as touch Kita, so help me, I will strangle you." he yelled.Could he really back up his threat? He didn't know, but the thought of him and Kita... No... Kita wasn't like that... Should would never...But then again, he had been gone for nearly two year, only seeing her for short visits...Could she...?@bunnyshadow

@dada_dragon ~~~Vladan laughed haughtily at James's loud shouting. He cracked his knuckles out of habit before giving Odilia a light slap on the flank. The large animal bared her teeth in a silent yawn, before drowsily opening her amber eyes."You can say that all you want, but you'll never be able to read her like I can." Vladan smiled arrogantly, his dark gaze landing onto James's. The young man can sense his doubt... "You've been gone for what? Two years?" He clicked his tongue condescendingly before continuing. "How many times has she visited you int he past two years? Now how many times have you seen her in the past few weeks?""You can call me a snake all you want, but I hope you realize how much better I am for her than you will ever be. I have everything you can never get. Fame, fortune, reputation... What can you give her that I can't give her even more of?"

James was struck by Vladan's confidence. There was no hesitation... no doubt in his voice... He didn't even flinch.James wanted to believe that Kita was the same girl he had known all these years, that she would never betray him like that. That she could never hurt him...But Vladan knew exactly where his insecurities lied... He had wondered why she hadn't visited... Why she seemed so reluctant to tell him the whole truth...She seemed so different around him now... And even after promising to never go back to her old ways, here she was, talking to Vladan Vietkov so informally, like she knew him more than just working for him..."WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?!" he roared, losing any semblance of self-control. "IF YOU THINK YOU'RE WHAT'S RIGHT FOR HER, YOU'RE DEAD WRONG!"He was approaching Vladan now, his feet moving on their own. His anger and misery were controlling him now, fierce denial fueling his rage."YOU'RE A SNAKE, VIETKOV! AND YOU POISON ANYONE AND ANYTHING THAT COMES CLOSE TO YOU!" He was right in Vladan's face now.He drew back and threw a fist in Vladan's direction.@bunnyshadow

@dada_dragon ~~~"Woah, woah, woah." Vladan said with a victorious grin. He had done exactly what he wanted to do--mess with James's mind. An additional piece placed on his chessboard that will ultimately be thrown aside in place of a better one. The other man was closing the distance between them quickly now, and Vladan was unable to react quickly enough to dodge. However he managed to throw his arms up to block the punch."This isn't what you want to do right now." Vladan muttered through grit teeth. "I don't think I'm right for her, James. I know I'm right for her.""You better start thinking about what you do before doing it. You work for me now, and attacking your overseer won't do you any good."

James grabbed his shirt. He was feeling overwhelmed. This was too much at once. His thoughts were racing, and he was growing more and more furious by the minute. It was all too much.He glared at Vladan, feeling his hands shaking. His voice got quiet."Tell me, Vietkov... What do I have to lose?" he growled. "Throw me back in the jail, kill me... @dada_dragon ~~~Vladan grabbed James's wrist angrily. Who did this guy think he was, putting his hands on him like that? The man was absolutely furious at how the other was treating him now. He looked up, and held James's gaze.Yet... He couldn't help but respect the man somewhat. And he could see where James was coming from. He had remembered something once, something that he had followed by for a larger portion of his life after Kira passed.The most dangerous creation of society is that of a man who has nothing to lose. Now that... That made him think. It was a shame James was only a healer, and not some destructive Enabled like Torch."I don't kill." Vladan said. "Without reasonable excuse." He added. "As for Kita..." He trailed off as he narrowed his stormy eyes. "There is something about her that I like a lot... I'm unsure as to what it is but..." Vladan shrugged, before patting James's shoulder with his free hand."You can keep her." He said. "You make her happy, and I'm sure she does the same to you. As long as you manage to work for me in a satisfactory manner, I won't get in the way."

James let go. He was still furious. His sudden shift from insisting Kita loved him and not James to saying he would allow James to have her... It did nothing to dispel his doubt.He made it sound like James had won their argument, but that was just another one of his mind tricks... James could have Kita, but Vladan could take her from him at any time... It only served to worsen his feelings of despair.James could see why he had been warned about this man. In a single conversation, he had broken James... Caused him to doubt everything he had believed to be true... James didn't know his lies from the truth... He said everything so matter-of-factly..."What do you want from me?" He said, trying in vain to hide the misery in his voice. What could he do? He hated himself for submitting to this snake, but what choice did he have?@bunnyshadow

He trailed off as he headed across his room to one of the large double door closets. As he shifted through his clothing, he continued to speak."Enabled humans have been appearing all over the place, and I hire them to send off to other countries to protect important political and military figures. Oftentimes, my agents get hurt in the process. This is where you come in.""I need you to either stay back here at headquarters and heal anyone that is being sent in, or vacation to those places and nurse my soldiers back to health."

James contemplated this. It seemed innocent enough, but he didn't trust Vladan still. He was a master of manipulation... What seemed like a simple deal now could very well mean far more in the future..."And what about Kita?" He asked coldly. "She worked hard to get herself out of this lifestyle. She lost nearly everything when she left the gang we were with and she fought hard to build her life back up."He crossed his arms, pretending that he had any kind of confidence left after Vladan had completely destroyed him."Don't you dare ruin that for her." He slammed his closet shut, arm full of clothes before leaving the room.-{TIME SKIP}The ringing pierced his ears like the shrill scream from an old alarm. His head throbbed from last night's... What happened last night again? Probably some not so good stuff, considering how terribly he felt and how dry his throat was. He let out a muffled groan into his pillow, before forcing himself up with his elbows."Hello?" He said tiredly into the phone."Hello Mr. Veitkov. There seems to be a problem with your soldiers.""What do you mean?""One of your clients has refused to send the money over to your account, even after your soldiers have been sent over for their escort mission." He sat up now, rubbing his eyes to wake himself up."Bring them back then." Vladan said condescendingly."We can't. Your client refuses to release them.""What are you trying to tell me right now?""They are being held hostage, and he expects you to leave them with him.""Why?""He claims that they weren't doing their job properly, and because they were unable to protect him as promised, he demands to keep them as his own men."Vladan stood and began pacing back and forth across his room. He ran a hand through his hair before stopping. He closed his eyes, then spoke."Thank you for the heads up, darling. I can handle the rest on my own. Text me the name of the client, and you can take the day off.""Thank you sir."Vladan didn't bother replying as he hung up the phone.

Kita yawned as she checked her clock again. She was folding laundry. Nothing terribly exciting, but she was waiting for James to call from wherever it was that Vladan had sent him to this time. The time difference was killer, but he was worth it.Grabbing a pile of folded laundry, she walked over to James' room, putting it away neatly in his drawers. She paused, holding one of his shirts, and pulled it on over her tank top. Old habits die hard...Quickly putting away her own clothes, she checked the clock again. It was much later than it should have been... Maybe he was busy... Or maybe...She began to dial his number, before changing her mind and calling Vladan.@bunnyshadow

@dada_dragon ~~~Vladan turned off the tap water faucet when his glass was filled with the crystalline water. He took a huge gulp, finished the rest, then refilled it a second time. Before he had a chance to take another drink, the familiar tone of his ringing phone pierced his ears."What's wrong now...ยจ He muttered under his breath. He still had a raging headache from the night before, and it had only grown larger from this morning's news.Vladan took a look at the caller ID, and picked it up with a short "Hello." in an unusually relieved tone of voice. He took another sip from his glass, before placing it heavily against the counter."What do you need?"

"Hey, Vladan..." She said tiredly. "Have you heard from James? He was supposed to call me tonight and I'm getting worried."She should have called James... Should have just gone straight to him rather than using Vladan as a middle man... It was cruel to Vladan... Asking him about James... She knew how he felt about her, even though she preferred to pretend she didn't...And yet she didn't look forward to another forced conversation with James either... She didn't know what had happened, but he always seemed so... suspicious of her... Like he thought she was doing things while he was gone...She supposed it was her fault... Having gotten involved in business with someone like Vladan without telling him... But it seemed like more than that...@bunnyshadow

"I only talk to him when I have to." He was lying through his teeth, and he knew it.The young man couldn't have cared less about how well Kita and James were doing relationship wise. Well... That was a lie. He cared only if they were not doing well.Vladan, honest to god, didn't know what to do regarding Kita. He told himself his words to her were all a lie, and blamed it on the alcohol, but then again... She was something else. The woman didn't care about his money, his company, or anything he could offer her. She didn't like him and that was what forced him to continue chasing after her. The more she pushed him away, the more he wanted her.He shook his head, almost as if to release those ideas from his brain before they could implant themselves deeper into his mind.

Worst-case scenarios echoed around her head, but she pushed it aside."I'm coming over, Vladan." She said, grabbing her keys. She should probably take the truck James had bought her with the money he earned from his new "job". She might have her reservations about Vladan employing her boyfriend, but at least he paid him well..."If James is in trouble, I want to help."@bunnyshadow
