Kita nodded, heading back inside.

James and Willow seemed to be having a conversation, but it stopped as soon as she returned. No doubt they were talking about her...

"Hey, Kita." James said, smiling.

She sat down and began taking small bites of food.

"Where's Vladan?" He asked.

"Outside. He'll be back in a bit." She said simply.

"I know what you are."

Vladan blew out the tobacco smoke, eyes narrowing slightly at the sudden intrusion. He tossed the cigarette on the sidewalk, crushing the product with the tip of his shoe. His chest tightened, body tensing in preparation for danger. Vladan turned to face the newcomer, a broad yet obviously fake smile crossing his face. "A lot of people do." He said. "It's hard to get a break from the media nowadays." He surveyed the stranger--a man, mid twenties, well kept brown hair.

"No." The older man replied from his spot near the exit. "I know what you are. Not who you are."

Vladan felt himself balling up his fists by his side, but he forced himself to release them. "I don't know what you're talking about."

"There are some things you can't hide. With a profile as high as yours, you're bound to slip then and again." The brown haired man reached inside his shirt, and Vladan moved to do the same, but paused when a ID card was pulled out from the other guy's pocket. "What are you reaching for?" The man asked with a knowing smile.

Vladan cleared his throat, knowing in full that he had been ready to pull out a weapon. "Nothing." He stepped closer to the stranger, leaning in to look at the badge. A top secret government worker... Vladan looked up from the badge. "Why are you showing me this?"

"Don't act dumb." The brunette said, putting his card away. "It's the law for mutants to either be locked away, taken care of by the government or sent to fight in the military. New law since your last escapade in northern Russia. Mutants like you are dangerous and uncontrollable."

How did he know? Vladan shifted his weight nervously, options lessening as the conversation continued to progress. He took a few steps back when he noticed another two men appear behind the first. "Look, man. I don't want any trouble. I don't know what you're talking about." The men stepped forward, bending his knees a little, crouching in preparation for a fight. "Come on...I want a lawyer."

"No one cares about what you dirty mutants want."

The first of the men ran at him, and Vladan managed to sidestep him to find himself face to face with the other. This man was significantly bigger than the first, and he had just enough time to take that in before ducking the fist headed straight at his face. He countered with a punch of his own, and the man reeled back in pain when he got hit square in the jaw.

Vladan let out a short grunt as the first threw him to the ground, and he moved to throw a punch at his attacker's face. He cried out in pain at the sudden shock in his abdomen, locking down to see a taser making contact with his skin. He turned towards his opponent, in time only to see the fist flying straight at him, then darkness.

"Take him away." He heard. Vladan felt himself being lifted up roughly, before losing consciousness completely.

---

"Did you get a close look at the men following Vladan out?" Willow said suddenly, remembering her previous worries. "When I first got here, I accidentally bumped into one of them...from then onto when you went out, they've been shooting either us or Vladan dirty looks." She looked from James to Kita.

"We should ask him about it when he comes back..."

James nodded, but Kita looked ill at ease.

"What is it, Kita?" He asked.

"In my experience, people staring at and then following Vladan does not usually result in anything good..."

She closed her eyes, focusing in on Vladan's energy. She figured that his energy would flare up if he tried to fight, but what she actually discovered startled her.

"He's gone." She said simply. "The outside area of the restaurant is well within my range, but I can't find him."

James sighed. "I'll pay. You guys go see if you can figure out where he went."

Willow nodded quickly. She stood up, tugging at her hair nervously. "I should have said something earlier." The woman muttered stressfully to Kita. "I didn't know. I wasn't sure what they wanted. I just thought..."

She stepped outside, and it dawned on her just how easily she could have prevented the situation. Vladan was no where in sight, and she scanned the ground. A cigarette laid several feet away, still giving off a bit of smoke as it died quietly on the sidewalk. "I'm sorry. I should have mentioned it but it was just that he started getting mad and then you left and he followed after you."

A black lighter caught the attention of her downcast eyes, and silver engravings glittered under the light from the restaurant's decorative lanterns. She kneeled down, picking it up. The silver formed the outline of a tiger with wings, and a gold half circle surrounded the logo. Willow reached towards Kita, handing her the lighter.

"Vladan smokes, but this isn't his lighter, is it?" She said suddenly.

"No..." she agreed. "It looks like a company logo... not Vladan's company... I can't see him carrying around something that promotes another business... he's too proud for that..."

James came outside, a look of concern on his face.

"Did you guys find anything?"

"That lighter." Willow said thoughtfully. "Have you seen that logo before? I think the men might have had something to do with Vladan's disappearance, and this might be our only way of finding him." She looked down the street, but there was nothing in sight except for a few parked cars.

"We should get back and try doing some research. There's nothing we can do now. It's late." She paused. "If anything, he might show up tomorrow morning."

"If there are people after Vladan, it might be safer to stay in our apartment tonight..." Kita said. "We have an extra room that you can stay in, Willow."

James pulled into the parking lot of their apartment. It had been a while since he'd been back here... Not since he'd left for Russia...

They walked up the stairs to the apartment, opening the door to find it exactly as it was when Kita had left. James set his jacket down on a chair and pointed to Xavior's room.

"You can take that room, Willow. I'm gonna do some research on that logo in my room. Just knock on the door if you need me."

As he left, Kita slumped down on the couch.

"We should've just stayed back at the mansion..." she mumbled, her blank expression not making it clear if her comment was intended to be a joke or not.

Willow nodded silently in compliance to James's words. Once he was gone, she sat down besides Kita. "I'm sure he'll be alright..." The woman said naively, though a bit unsure and hesitant. Willow fiddled with the lighter for a bit, pulling the trigger. A bright black flame spouted from the top, and she yelped in surprise at how hot the small fire was.

"I'm going to get some rest." She said, dropping it on the table. "You and James should keep it." Willow stood, moving for the room she was given.

---

There was a white flash, and he opened his eyes just to wince and close them. The bright light stung his eyes, and he turned his head away.

"What's...going on...?" Vladan asked wearily, trying to sit up. His attempt failed against his restraints, and he dropped his head back onto the hard surface he was strapped to. His heart tightened, and he flexed his arms against his ties.

Not like this...

"Veitkov." The voice knocked him out of his panicked revelations, and he recognized it to belong to the same brown haired male from earlier.

"You can't do this." Vladan said, glancing over at him from the corner of his eyes.

The man held up some photographs and notes, waving them in front of Vladan'a face almost tantalizingly. "You see this?"

Vladan squinted, and recognized the array of photos the man held in front of his face. All were close up shots of his face, but it was clear that the focus of the pictures weren't just that. Several of the photos had him with bloodshot bright red eyes, while others had them in their regular gray color. He didn't say anything.

"We've been following you for quite a while now. We know you're Enabled. No wonder why your militia seems to have such...high regards to you. Birds of a feather, hm?"

Vladan grit his teeth. "If I go missing it'll be all over the news. People will be looking for me."

"Already taken care of Veitkov." The man replied with a wide grin. He placed the photographs on a metal table near the door, and the television flickered on to a news channel.

Businessman Vladan Veitkov suspected of being Enabled. The man has been taken away and restrained by a government agency until further notice.

"That's just unfair." Vladan said with a grimace.

The brunette smirked, turning off the TV. "Call me Deion. I have a feeling we'll be veryyy good friends." The man opened the door, and several men in surgical masks and doctors coats rushed in. "Be nice to the doctors."

Vladan held his breath, releasing it shakily as the first needle pierced his flesh.

"JAMES, WILLOW!!! GET IN HERE!!!"

Kita was staring wide-eyed at the news. She had turned it on just to have something to mindlessly watch, but then the broadcast had come on.

James ran into the room, fully expecting Kita to have gone into a panic attack or something, but the second he entered the room, he understood.

"Taken away and restrained..." he said thoughtfully. "So they're starting to take their threats of capturing and containing enabled seriously..."

"Authorities say that they had been monitoring Vietkov and had determined him to be enabled from the results of their surveillance."

James' blood froze. If they had been monitoring Vladan, then they might know about him or Willow or Kita.

Kita seemed to have drawn this same conclusion.

"We are in so much trouble..." she said quietly.

Willow wrung her fingers absentmindedly at the news. "James should be okay." She said suddenly. "His job working for Vladan is considered to be the military, so he should be okay as long as he lays low." The woman turned to Kita. "Me and you won't have anything to fall back on...I never got hired by him, just roped into coming along."

Kita sighed. "I doubt it'll be very long before they find us. I wouldn't be surprised if they're aready tailing us..."

"If they do capture you two, Willow should be alright... They'll likely just have you do the same work you've always done, but they'll just supervise you more closely..." James said reflectively. "But Kita's sensory power and ability to mimic could make her a target... They'll use her to detect other enabled or..."

"Send me off to the military. I get it." She mumbled, seemingly deep in thought. "If I get captured, I'm not going to talk about my mimic ability if they don't already know about it. I'll let them think sensory is my only power..."

"Kita, you're not going to get..."

"James... If they come, I'm not going to fight them."

James looked shocked at this revelation.

"I'm tired of fighting, James... I'm not going to spend my life looking over my shoulder for some invisible evil..." she said. "And if I go peacefully, they're more likely to allow me more freedom than if I fight them."

"Kita, you..."

"I'm not going to be anyone's prisoner again. I want to go of my own accord." She said coldly. "I'm not going to seek them out, but if they come..."

James hoped they never would.

"It's only going to be a matter of time..." Willow said quietly. "While you guys were out of the country, a new law passed about Enabled. We're to be captured on sight...maybe it's because of the growing crime rates but I'm honestly not sure anymore." She stopped her rambling to glance over at Kita.

---

"Strange." The masked doctor said, writing on a clipboard as he spoke. "Enabled seems to have insensitivity to general pain." The man said thoughtfully to the nurse cleaning tools across the room.

"Don't treat me like a guinea pig." Vladan spat out in disgust. He could hear footsteps against the floor, and he could see the nurse's shadow fall across his body. "What do you want, woman?" He said angrily.

She swung a small vile in front of his face, and he recognized it to be filled with the blood they had extracted from him before. "AB- blood type." The woman said.

"I'm aware." Vladan said with an eye roll. "I've been to the doctors before."

She put the vile down on the metal table, and the first doctor stepped over. "Our time is up, Veitkov." The doctor said coldly. "I never would have thought that you were one of them. Always respected your success to be honest. Now I know you're just another one of those freaks you send off to fight and die."

Vladan stared at the doctor straight in the eye, and he wanted so badly to use his powers...to show that man that he wouldn't let himself get disrespected...but knew that it would only drag him into a deeper hole than he was already in.

"You're going to regret saying that to me." Vladan said with a thin smile.

"I'm not afraid of you." The doctor said blankly. "We'll be back for more testing soon. I'll see you around."

The door slammed shut behind the pair that had performed on him, and he let his head fall back against the hard surface of the table. Vladan looked around, examining the room. Television. Metal tables by the walls. Chair several feet away. Camera on the ceiling. No doubt capturing his every move.

He focused a death gaze towards the camera.

"None of you are safe." Vladan mouthed threateningly.

James sat quietly on the couch. Kita had gone to bed, though it was only a matter of time before she would wake up, screaming. It was becoming a terrible routine...

He stared at his laptop screen, browsing a website with the lighter's logo right at the top. It was a government medical facility just outside of town, which did not make him feel better about Kita's confession about wanting to surrender if they came...

He didn't want to see her hurt... not again...

He looked outside and spotted a van parked on the side of the street. Were they being watched right now, or was he just being paranoid? He wished he could feel safe in his own home, but that wasn't going to happen...

Not anymore...

Sleep was hard to come by. The majority of his night was focused on figuring out how to get out of the situation he had been put into. He could join the military...but that was another prison all together. Vladan wondered fleetingly how James, Willows, Kita and all the others were faring. He hadn't had the time to think about them until now, and Vladan bit his lip in thought.

He had heard about the new law, but didn't think he would be caught. There had to be someone from inside that gave him away, considering how carefully he was with his powers.

Vladan didn't know he had fallen asleep until the sound of something ringing woke him up.

"Hello. I'm going to be your psychologist." He turned his head to the right, noticing that the empty chair now held a woman in a white coat. She was dark haired, brown eyes, relatively average looking.

"Hi." Vladan said tiredly.

"I'm sorry to have to wake you." She said. "How are you feeling today?"

"I feel like an animal." He replied matter-of-factually. Vladan squinted, then his eyes widened slightly in recognition.

The psychologist looked down nervously at her clipboard. "What is it?" She said quietly.

"I know you." Vladan said.

She ignored him, before beginning the session. "What powers do you have?"

"Insensitivity to general pain." He admitted. Vladan knew that it was better than them finding out his other ability.

"How does getting "hurt" make you feel?"

"Good." He said, examining her.

She seemed surprised at this, scribbling quickly on her clipboard. "Your eyes." The psychologist said. "Why do they turn red?"

"I don't know." He lied.

But what I do know is that I found my ticket out of here...

Kita stared at the ceiling. She had told James that she was going to sleep, but that was the furthest thing from her mind. Sleep did not come easy these days, and despite her constant fatigue, it was easier than dealing with the nightmares.

This new law was frightening. Fear of enabled was not anything knew, but this was a powerful move on the government's part... Powerful and dangerous...

Regardless, she was not going to keep running... she didn't have the energy to run... Surrendering wasn't her favourite option, but it seemed to be the best option...

"Where did you get that scar?" The woman asked.

Vladan arched a brow. "Me to know and you to find out, darling." He said with a thin smile. "Maybe I would be more inclined to tell if the entire world wasn't watching." The man said lowly, eyeing the camera.

He could see the woman's fingers tighten against the clipboard. "I'll see what I can do." She said quietly. The psychologist cleared her throat, then continued. "When did you figure out you were enabled?"

"Not that long ago, strangely." He said slyly. "Probably a few months ago...I was afraid at first, scared of being locked away because I accidentally got some strange mutation."

"How unlucky..." The woman said softly. "That's exactly what happened."

"I just wish it could be different." He said, faking a sniff. "It's been a long time, Mia." Vladan said, holding her gaze. "So much has happened since Kirah, right?"

The woman stood suddenly, the chair scraping against the floor. "I'm the one asking questions." She said thinly. "And our session is over. I'll see you, Vladan."

He let out a satisfied sigh, holding back a smirk as he leaned back against the table.

James woke up to the smell of pancakes and was surprised to see Kita at the stove, pouring batter into the pan.

"Hey..." he mumbled, half awake. He was still on the couch, fully clothed. She glanced over briefly before returning to her task.

"Morning..." she mumbled. She looked terrible... almost like she hadn't slept at all... She hadn't woken him up, so perhaps she hadn't... "Bacon and eggs went bad, so all I had was the powdered pancake mix and frozen fruit..."

"That's alright... Do you want help?" He asked.

"Can you wash some plates? I didn't get around to it before we left for Russia..." she said, not making eye contact. At least it was something though...

He washed some dishes as she cooked. It was almost like it had been before prison, but it felt wrong... forced even... A lot of things had changed since those days...

Willow yawned lazily, swinging her legs off the edge of the bed. She rubbed her eyes tiredly. It took her a moment, but the memory of Vladan being taken away shook her out of her stupor. The sweet smell of pancakes and syrup were brought to her attention as she wandered into the kitchen. She noticed that Kita had been the one cooking, considering how James was busy doing the dishes at the sink. Willow hated

"We can't help him." She said straightforwardly as she took a seat at the table. "Even if he gets out, there's nowhere for him to hide. His life is over."

---

A whole dozen, if not more miles away, Vladan seemed to have reached the same conclusion. The light in the room was blinding, and his entire body was relatively sore from being kept in the same position for an extended period of time.

He wanted to be released, but he didn't want to show weakness. Vladan closed his eyes, forcing himself to get some rest that he didn't get much of the night before.

James set the table, the weight of Willow's words hitting him hard, not because he was concerned for Vladan, though he did feel bad for the man who had been slowly earning his trust and friendship... His concern was for Kita, who seemed so determined to give in...

He wondered for the millionth time if she really wanted it or if she was giving in to the hopelessness she'd been showing these last few weeks...

"What will you do when they come, Willow?"

Kita was setting the pancakes on the table, and didn't even look up as she asked the question. James had been wondering the same thing, but hadn't asked out of consideration for Willow... It was a hard choice, and he didn't want to pressure her into giving an answer...

"You're either going to have to accept it or fight it. You can't ride the fence. And if you're going to fight it, they won't play nice... you'll have to get your hands dirty or spend your life running..."

"Fight." She said with a small smile. "I've never been much of a fighter, but after spending so much time with everyone lately...I don't think I would be willing to give up without a struggle." Willow pulled at the ends of her hair. "If anything, they'll just make use of me and my powers...I'm sure they're already looking for me, considering how I'm not exactly quiet about what I do."

Once those words left her mouth, she glanced up. "So that's why I'm planning on staying away from the two of you after breakfast."

James hadn't even thought of this. He was so worried about Kita that it hadn't crossed his mind... He didn't say anything, not sure what to say.

I'm sure they'll make their move the second you two leave... they're too scared to take on more than one of us at a time... Otherwise they'd have taken both Vladan and I at the restaurant."

James sighed. "I think I know somewhere, but first we need to grab a few things..."

They walked to a nearby bus stop and climbed aboard one heading downtown. As it pulled away, the van across the street opened up and two men climbed out.

He felt his heart tighten, but it was what she wanted, right?

They got off a while later at a supermarket. He turned to Willow, handing her four fifty-dollar bills.

The woman kept her head down...just in case.
