Batteron And Meriton Creature Art Redraw

January 7, 2020 at 3:30 PM

Creature Redraw

The Batteron and Meriton species have been redrawn and updated in terms of art. Overall, you should notice a clearer and more familiar style. We felt that the artwork in the older, original style was mismatched with the rest of the creatures here at Egg Cave. We hope you enjoy the updated changes.

Both species are available seasonally as part of the Advent Tree in December. Now that it's January, you cannot currently obtain them.

Other Species Redraws

Are there other species on Egg Cave that you feel are mismatched with the rest of the creatures at Egg Cave? Leave a comment below for other art redraws you might like to see in the future.

I really like the change in the Meriton, but not the Batteron. I thought it was pretty the way it was. The redraw seems a little too cartoonish for me.

veritaspunk • 7 Jan 2020, 9:55 PM

@valorie100 It's a surprise to me that they want to focus on one standard egg cave design.. whereas a multitude of design concepts to flourish I would think would be the preference. After all variety is the spice of life πŸ˜‰ but egg cave must not like things too "spicy" πŸ˜‹

valorieviolet • 7 Jan 2020, 10:04 PM

@veritaspunk yes, exactly! There doesn't need to be one set style, so what if they were mismatched. EC did a whole different style for 2011 CRW (with creatures like the Arnmnae) and it was fine. I'm not saying this style is outright bad, I just think the redraw wasn't necessary.

valorieviolet • 7 Jan 2020, 10:06 PM

I think it's safe to say that the CRW creatures for this year will be drawn in this style... which means big kawaii eyes xD

The critters I listed are the ones that stand out to me the most, but in a rather odd way. They either look way too similar or I believe their current artwork doesn't live up to its designs full potential. I might have been picky, yes, but that's my honest opinion. 😊

chaotictreat • 7 Jan 2020, 10:14 PM

Nooo, the batteron looked so much better before ☹️ @veritaspunk I agree! One of the things that's so cool about the creatures on Eggcave is that they're all so different. I think that if they change them all to be the exact same style then it might not be as fun anymore :/

lucas • 7 Jan 2020, 10:15 PM

On a final note, I selected those comparing them to the older and newest critters. And I do believe the new style update for the batteron & meriton were necessary and they look 1000x better now, but guess you just can't please everyone. πŸ˜‰

xxcouchxx • 7 Jan 2020, 10:16 PM

@valorie100 I believe they are simply testing out the redraw to improve the overall quality and detail of the art itself, not necessarily the "style." (There are several different styles present on EggCave, but it's easy to tell the time spent creating one creature vs another..)

lucas • 7 Jan 2020, 10:17 PM

@xxcouchxx exactly. They will never change everything to fit the very same style, but they do need to update the older sloppy and less detailed designs so the critter actually looks like it belongs here.

xxcouchxx • 7 Jan 2020, 10:21 PM

@lucas Yes, I agree. I love how different the creatures look from one another, but it is disappointing to see CSP travels and creatures of a lower quality I've ever seen on the site as of late. I mostly agree with your list, mine would be much longer.. *sigh*

lucas • 7 Jan 2020, 10:22 PM

And before anyone tries to come for me, just take a look at designs such as Flagrafly or Cumula VS the Beaguile, Fetti, Janot or Tortell and you'll understand what I mean.

chaotictreat • 7 Jan 2020, 10:25 PM

Does anyone have images of the original designs? Just because I liked those a lot better and that's how I want to think of them 😊

xxcouchxx • 7 Jan 2020, 10:37 PM

Also, the last stage of the Eriephant needs to be redrawn. (It's tusks are coming out of it's mouth, not it's face..) The creature is beautiful otherwise, it's the only reason I don't have one.

dragonnn • 7 Jan 2020, 10:41 PM

I really appreciate the new Meriton. It's design is much clearer.

lucas • 7 Jan 2020, 10:43 PM

Most older designs from 2009~2013 look better than some recent ones, I don't believe they need or should redraw everything.

skyfall4 • 7 Jan 2020, 10:59 PM

Ahhh the Meriton is so cute now!!!!

lucas • 7 Jan 2020, 11:01 PM

@limitless right, sorry 😊 still a valid general comment, I guess?

vampire666 • 7 Jan 2020, 11:09 PM

I already liked the Meriton. The update just made it cuter. 😊

saturna • 8 Jan 2020, 12:06 AM

I love the new Meriton! Although I am a bit worried about there being more sudden changes like these upsetting others...

dusskfall • 8 Jan 2020, 12:11 AM

kind of looks like i'm the only one that thinks the new meriton looks awful. i much perfered the strong clear lines, now it looks so sloppy.

armageddondoll • 8 Jan 2020, 12:48 AM

I like the new designs! I would actually consider having one now, where I used to dislike them. As far as redesigns, I think the Capyre, Crabbert, Dorrup, Krah, Listrick, Muska, Nomtuk, Skreel, Tammick, Tiver, and Yeep could use some updated love!

deku • 8 Jan 2020, 1:15 AM

i REALLY like these redraws! the older designs did seem like perhaps someone with less experience had drawn them. there's more detail and shading in the art and it pops more now! would love to see a redraw of the Calla with more detail, actually. a lot could be done now!

chaotictreat • 8 Jan 2020, 2:00 AM

I might have already said this but I do believe that the different levels of detail contribute to the variation of Eggcave creatures. It would be a shame to lose this variation by redrawing all the creatures that have less detail, just so they are more in keeping with one style.

chaotictreat • 8 Jan 2020, 2:02 AM

And I would have liked it if there had been some more notice? I don't know if I'm being unreasonable here, but I might have been more accepting if we'd been told that they were going to be redrawn, rather than just redrawing them?

lucas • 8 Jan 2020, 2:21 AM

@chaotictreat Would it change something if they told us beforehand? Not really. Anyways, There could be critters with simpler designs and different artworks obviously, as long as they live up to the EC standard.

chaotictreat • 8 Jan 2020, 6:37 AM

@lucas Maybe it wouldn't, but it would still be nice. And I think the batteron was fine as it was and lived up to the "Eggcave standard" just fine, but that's only my opinion 😊

hinokazes • 8 Jan 2020, 7:07 AM

I'm probably the only one here that doesn't want any change AT ALL... That EC stantard thing annoy me, they were very nice like they were, in fact, I thought the different art style they had was very nice, which is why I don't like the change...

sparklefox • 8 Jan 2020, 7:08 AM

@dusskfall - I'm not the biggest fan of it either, to be honest. On one hand, it looks a little cute. On the other, it looks less like a creature getting older and more like the same one sitting in different poses. The outlines are so thin and I can barely even see them.

spell • 8 Jan 2020, 9:54 AM

I like the new Meriton more but I thought that the Batteron looked better before ^^" Off the top of my head, I'd love to see a redraw of the Pogknot!

prairie • 8 Jan 2020, 10:33 AM

I'm a bit indifferent to the batteron change - as I was alright with the previous. What I can appreciate from the new batteron is that it has more color than just the mint green and red. 😱 The meriton's older design was a bit interesting for me to figure out - especially the 2nd

prairie • 8 Jan 2020, 10:35 AM

stage and possibly last (last I thought the wings where arms and it was sitting in a nest of sorts???). I thought the 1st stage was alright. The color palette still makes it challenging to read the new design, but I certainly appreciate the 2nd stage.

sodabearjess • 8 Jan 2020, 10:40 AM

I like the new meriton a lot better. I also like the batteron redraw, but I have to agree with some of the people above that it might not have needed to be changed.

metaphor • 8 Jan 2020, 1:30 PM

Oh, also the Muska. I'll be honest, I have no idea what's going on with that.

metaphor • 8 Jan 2020, 1:31 PM

And to be clear, I don't think we need to change everything just to fit some specific one-size-fits-all standard. Personally, I think a little variation among styles makes Egg Cave special. However, from a technical/readability perspective, I do think some creatures could benefit

metaphor • 8 Jan 2020, 1:32 PM

from a minor touchup. It wouldn't have to be a total revamp or anything to be effective. Just maybe better redefine key features, tighten up line work--that sort of thing.

metaphor • 8 Jan 2020, 1:40 PM

ALSO this whole discussion made me realize that I really need to brush up on my EC creatures, because I had to cheat and look at the archive to see what creatures some people were talking about haha

uzag • 8 Jan 2020, 3:48 PM

While a uniform look is nice and the new art looks neat, I'm feeling hestitant about this. It makes me worried that one of my favorites may look different next time I log in. Money is often involved and a change can leave you in a situation of "this is not what I paid for".

vibrancy • 8 Jan 2020, 5:13 PM

I never was too fond of either the batteron or the meriton, but now they’re super cute! I must admit this is a welcome update, at least for me.

musicgurl333 • 8 Jan 2020, 6:02 PM

I always like the batteron, so I'd disappointed to see the change. I mean, it's not *bad* but I liked the previous design a bit better. However, the meriton is a HUGE change for the better in my opinion. I never really cared for them, but they're much cuter now. 😊

musicgurl333 • 8 Jan 2020, 6:03 PM

As far as other mismatched designs, someone mentioned the coona and I couldn't agree more. It doesn't really look like part of eggcave.

iceiceice • 8 Jan 2020, 7:44 PM

Never take away my masers πŸ˜‹ Thanks!

orchids • 8 Jan 2020, 8:36 PM

I really liked the old Meriton.. aw ☹️

snowwall • 9 Jan 2020, 12:07 AM

>@lucas Would it change something if they told us beforehand? Not really. It would change the answer to: >chaotictreat Does anyone have images of the original designs? to "Yeah, sure", instead of "Turns out that all sources link to the home website and the pics have changed".

snowwall • 9 Jan 2020, 12:30 AM

Regardless of my preferences of old vs new art ('cause, yeah, who cares, really?), I believe that the Archive is no archive if it doesn't have old data (i.e., original art, if a redraw occurred).

chaotictreat • 9 Jan 2020, 2:16 AM

@hinokazes You're not the only one :/ @uzag Yeah, what if you spend a whole lot of time and effort (and possibly real money) to get a creature - and then all of a sudden they do a redraw and you don't like it anymore?? @snowwall Exactly!! I can't find the old art anywhere!!

tetouille10 • 9 Jan 2020, 2:33 AM

I am one of those who like these new designs ... Could the Mackatron be redesigned too?

sybil_howlett • 9 Jan 2020, 4:53 AM

I liked the old style but I adore the new one so much, it's adorable πŸ˜ƒ

asbe • 9 Jan 2020, 7:43 AM

Sorry, but I liked old Merriton much better. I want it back ☹️
