There is a brand-new feature under Preferences—Main & Side Accounts—where you can formally declare and link your main and side accounts. Everything to do with linking your mains and sides are done directly from your main account and you should do this immediately. First, verify your identity via SMS to specify an account as a main account. Once you're verified as a main account, you can enter the username, password, and email credentials of your side accounts directly on the page, and link them instantly.
Since this is now a formalized feature of the site, we will no longer be accepting or acknowledging main and side account designations as they appear in your public profile text. This is no longer a valid way to verify your identity and who accounts belong to.
Email and IP address spoofing is relatively easy to do. Asking you to verify your main account via SMS is a way of ensuring that it's really you and that you're really a human (and not a bot).
We understand that people will need some time to link their main and side accounts. In the next 3 to 6 months, Egg Cave's moderating team will become much less lenient toward accounts that are not formally declared as either a main or a side account. When suspicious activity occurs on accounts that are not declared as either a main or side, harsher and quicker penalties will be issued against these accounts.

This feature of verifying your mains and sides is released in preparation for a brand-new feature at Egg Cave that'll be released in late summer. It will be an achievement-type system that will allow you to earn CaveCash without a direct buy from the site. In this achievements system, you will be rewarded for completing activites that you're probably already doing (like feeding and many other activities!).
Because this feature will allow players to earn CaveCash for free, it is vital that we have tools and controls to fight and combat illegitimate accounts, abuse, and fraud. Only main accounts verified by SMS will be able to access this new feature when it is released and accounts declared as sides will be unable to access this feature. Get ready!
No, you do not have to verify your identity via SMS to continue playing Egg Cave. Egg Cave is free to play, without a phone number. It is not required at registration. Certain Egg Cave features that may be big targets for abuse and fraud may require identity verification via SMS to access in the future.

@maylin09 What do you mean they got hacked? The site wouldn't need to "hack" you. i trust this site because they have my paypal information lol. ive bought a lot of cc over the years and never have they mishandled my private information.

@maylin09 That's okay. You just won't be able to use the upcoming CC feature. They said they would give us up to 6 months to link accounts so maybe after a month or two you'll see that there havent been issues and decide its safe.

@cranberrycat1 If you want to change mains you will need to send in a ticket to do so. Verifying main and sides is done on your main account. You don't need to log into your side to confirm it as a side.

Oh! Just had a thought. Now I'm still 'new' around here so maybe a 'user count' of some sort already exists, but having 'verified' accounts could give a better idea of how many individual players there are, at least in some sense. That'd be an interesting stat to know imo.

doesn't SMS have to do with cell phones? How will this effect me? I have no cell phone and live in a small unincorporated town that has no cell service. I cannot get phone or texting where I live. (only have a landline and internet connection.)

@widgetspinner There's a free app called TextNow that can be used in-browser as well as on desktop for texting that you might look into. I used to use it years ago when I didn't have a phone.

@lilacfox @pipkitten I wouldn’t recommend burner numbers, as SMS verification will be required monthly for the monthly CC reward. Possibility here that you can’t verify each month, if it’s a burner #

@Ian Oh yeah, I can see why burner numbers aren't ideal! TexNow isn't a burner if you don't want it to be though; your number only gets deactivated and reassigned if you don't keep it active by using it every month or so as far as I remember lol

google voice also works similarly to how pipkitten described -- although i can't remember if you need a real phone number to make an account or not... could be an alternative for someone who may want a bit more privacy though? i used it as a business phone number for a while 😊

@Ian I figured it out. All my cove are using a different email address. Hopefully I won't have to verify anything on my sides, I haven't used one of those emails in quite some time.

@Ian Wait, do you mean we'll have to verify through text every month for the CC rewards? That's not clear in the post. I verified with the phone I have now but it's a 'free government phone' that may not be around forever and I have no access to any other cell phones.

Now that sides can be verified, is there still a need for each account to be associated with a different email? It's kinda a bother to have to link accounts to an email I don't use, especially if there's a need to recover the password.

So excited for both of these features! Having the linked accounts definitely paves the way for bigger things. And having ways to earn free CC will help even the playing field for those with less access to funds. ^ _ ^
