There is a brand-new feature under Preferences—Main & Side Accounts—where you can formally declare and link your main and side accounts. Everything to do with linking your mains and sides are done directly from your main account and you should do this immediately. First, verify your identity via SMS to specify an account as a main account. Once you're verified as a main account, you can enter the username, password, and email credentials of your side accounts directly on the page, and link them instantly.
Since this is now a formalized feature of the site, we will no longer be accepting or acknowledging main and side account designations as they appear in your public profile text. This is no longer a valid way to verify your identity and who accounts belong to.
Email and IP address spoofing is relatively easy to do. Asking you to verify your main account via SMS is a way of ensuring that it's really you and that you're really a human (and not a bot).
We understand that people will need some time to link their main and side accounts. In the next 3 to 6 months, Egg Cave's moderating team will become much less lenient toward accounts that are not formally declared as either a main or a side account. When suspicious activity occurs on accounts that are not declared as either a main or side, harsher and quicker penalties will be issued against these accounts.

This feature of verifying your mains and sides is released in preparation for a brand-new feature at Egg Cave that'll be released in late summer. It will be an achievement-type system that will allow you to earn CaveCash without a direct buy from the site. In this achievements system, you will be rewarded for completing activites that you're probably already doing (like feeding and many other activities!).
Because this feature will allow players to earn CaveCash for free, it is vital that we have tools and controls to fight and combat illegitimate accounts, abuse, and fraud. Only main accounts verified by SMS will be able to access this new feature when it is released and accounts declared as sides will be unable to access this feature. Get ready!
No, you do not have to verify your identity via SMS to continue playing Egg Cave. Egg Cave is free to play, without a phone number. It is not required at registration. Certain Egg Cave features that may be big targets for abuse and fraud may require identity verification via SMS to access in the future.

1) Can multiple mains be registered with the same phone number? (My cellphone isn’t working, so I might need to use my boyfriend’s or my sister’s number.) 2) Is it possible to hide some sides and show others?

@kleineprinz If you don't want to verify your main account you can still play normally. Verification will be required to participate in the planned free CC stuff.

@lykhaos117 You can not verify multiple mains with one phone number. As for your second question, showing/hiding linked sides is something that is planned but not out yet.

May we see this feature expand to additionally allow us to link family accounts, for people who share an IP address with us so we can show that they're legitimate players as well? Obviously with their accounts also verified independently with their personal phone number/SMS?

Okay, sounds cool to me but unfortunately, my cell phone is just for emerg. calls. I do not have texting nor do I have voice mail. So those of us who can not get an SMS, what do we do???

Fantastic feature with earning cc through the game;) I verified my account via SMS, and I am from Poland so, guys from outside USA - it happends without any problems. You just read carefully what is there, dont just click it without thinking, and all will be fine;)

The use of SMS is a wonderful idea, and I do hope people against the idea come around. 😊 Monthly SMS verification is great at preventing people from making multiple online phone numbers and multiple Caveaccounts. I also believe it is a great way to prevent the devaluation of CS.

@ian I do believe it may be a good idea to mention in the blog post that there will need to be monthly SMS verification just in case players use a phone number that they may not have constant access to, that way it will give them time to think things more thoroughly. 😊

I thought the sms was just when linking the account, not each month. I played many online games and this one would be the first one to harass me every month directly in my private life if I dare to give my phone number just for some CC. Even important IRL things don't do that :/

i understand some people are concerned due to not having consistent access to a phone but free CC is something that would be very easily abused... i much rather have a 2FA system in place to enable the ability to earn free CC, than to not have the free CC at all. it's a privilege

the alternatives mentioned by other users like textnow and google voice are certainly worth looking at too for those without phones/with privacy concerns... 2FA is becoming much more prevalent and more and more sites are requiring it or encouraging it for logins --

@pwuffy For me it's the opposite, my privacy is WAY more important than some CC in an adoptable game. I never give my phone number to any game, because they don't have to know it. My phone is for private/pro stuff, it shouldn't be thrown at any game just because they ask for it.

You don't know what will happen to your information, if they'll be sold, stolen, etc... I do not want to receive sms spams or worse, actual callls, especially in the middle of the night when I'm slepeing. If EC wants my phone number, they have to give me proof I can trust them

browsing the internet in current day means your info is being sold/stolen, it's how google, fb, etc. cater their ads to you for example. that being said i understand privacy is a concern still, which is why alternative phone #s such as google voice are great, worth checking out!

Quite frankly, I think some people are over thinking this. I've been around Eggcave since 2011, and they've never disturbed my privacy or spammed me in any way. I fully trust this site as they are doing everything for our benefit here

I agree EggCave is trustworthy, putting in your phone number is no different than putting in your credit card information to purchase CC. They could easily sell off all of our credit card information if they wanted to. And since the site has been running for such a long time,

@bone I personally do not use my credit card on the internet AT ALL, which is why I can't buy CC in the first place '-' And also, there's a BIG difference between a phone number and a credit card, because your credit card all your money can be stolen

I have no issue with privacy concerns or whatever (I did use a credit card to pay for CC after all!) but I would like confirmation on if this free-CC thing will require *monthly* text verification? @Ian @Orderedchaos That's extremely different than a 1-time verification!

I've already verified, so what happens if I lose access to this phone number, is there a way to change the number associated with my account? I've never used google number / whatever but does that stuff support a continuous service for the same number, for monthly verifications?

@bone I don't want to add fuel to the fire, but I think it's worth noting that credit card info through PayPal is quite different - PayPal encrypts info so that EC never actually has your credit card # in the first place. This, on the other hand, is directly providing a phone #.

@hinokazes I know there is a difference between a credit card and a phone number, I meant it as players already give their personal info out if they use their credit info to purchase CC (well I thought they did, turns out EggCave uses Paypal, I never bought CC on here before.)
