Margot's senses were sharpened to a knife point by adrenaline as the Chitauri rushed at her. Wielding the rifle like a bayonet, she hacked at the chest of the great beast. The crunch and screech of tearing metal rung out from its tattered armor, and it let out a cry as it fell to the ground.

"Stay together!" she ordered, trying to keep the group from scattering. The Chitauri were all approaching from one location only, so as a solid army they had a better chance. By the time she noticed a noise from behind her, it was too late; the Chitauri she had struck down moments ago had gotten up and dived at her again. A bullet whistled past her ear at that exact moment. She flinched away, ducking and turning only to see the dead beast fall for the last time. "Careful!" Margot barked at Aizel, her hands protectively cupping her ears. It was true that Aizel had just done her quite the favor, but a shot so close to her own head was risky to the point of foolishness (in her humble opinion).

The creatures fell around them like dominoes, and in a moment all the fighting was over. Margot looked them over for good measure, even blasting one through the head with her alien rifle. She didn't need any of them getting back up.

She could hear murmurings from some of the others about what to do next. Ray was scavenging and glancing around, and Aizel had gone to retrieve the hot-handed girl. Margot had a feeling she would end up going with them; after all, she didn't seem different than any of the others they'd picked up along the way. The thought of their ragtag team turning into a legitimate organized rebellion brought a wry smile to her face.

"We need to get moving," she instructed, raising her voice a bit just to be heard. "We need to clear out of here before more Chitauri reinforcements show up. Since we're looking for Stark, we should head deeper into the city. Our first priority is to find a temporary safe house--just to rest up for a few hours, eat, establish some more concrete plans."

A small voice from the other side of the river just barely caught her attention. Aaron, it seemed, had failed to cross the river. "He better not be able to swim," Margot thought to herself in exasperation. "Otherwise he's going to be in [yeep] big trouble for wasting my time."

"Wait there," she called out, checking to make sure her gloves were switched off. "I'll come and get you." Her only outward complaint came in the form of a fierce glare in his direction as she dove into the sewage water for a miserable second time.

If Ray had been a dog or some other animal with flexible ears, his would have pricked up as Margot issued the commands, and an idea occurred to him. Scouting, now, that was something he might actually be good at...
His focus flickered from the inner city skyline at which he had been gazing longingly at, and back down at the Chitauri littering the street, with similar desire. ... Was that a Chitauri grenade?? Ray hesitated, caught in the trap of indecision.

However distraught by the heat he was, Subutai did not fail to note himself of the girl's quite arrogant attitude. She cockily had placed a hand upon her hip, gazing at him after raising an eyebrow at the robot man. He wondered why said robot man acted so cheery all of a sudden, but chose to ignore it. After fixing her hair slightly, in what seemed like a mocking manner (he could bet she did that to make fun of him), she answered to his question unsatisfyingly.

He frowned.
"Hm, I am surprised that innocent girls roam the streets so late." he exclaimed in a mocking manner, a smirk blooming on his pale lips.

Sylvia didn't seem the least bit insulted by Subutai's comment. Instead, she put an hand on the hilt of her sword. "I could show you just about how innocent I am." she said with a smirk. "But, I'd rather not, because I have places to go, and things to do." The chitauri around Andrew and Sylvia were shifting around, and it was obvious that they were getting restless .

Andrew ceased his laughter when the newcomer spoke, and took on a steely gaze ahead. When the conversation steered to innocent girls, he raised his eyebrow yet again. Taking on the newcomer's mocking tone, "Surely, if Sylvia here is a innocent girl, then why is there a baby boy waddling to nowhere, only with a slave to take care of him?"
Andrew smirked and walked away, all the chitauri left following his strong steps. He pulled out a gagdet and talked to it, ordering more chitauri.

Frost overheard that mind reader's comment. She hesitated, then shrugged. That girl was already traveling with them, so they might as well give it all away. "We're heading to Stark Towers," she answered shortly. She looked at her daggers, covered with Chitauri muck, and started cleaning them, but they weren't any different than before, if not cleaner. She sat down and observed the others. Margot was swimming to get..Aaron, was it? Frost sighed. This was going to be frustrating.

Margot answered Aaron's cheery smile with a stern frown. She took his hand when offered and wrapped her fingers around his wrist, but rather than climbing out of the river, she tugged sharply at his arm. Where she stood, the river was no more than two feet deep. She half swam, half dragged the boy through the mucky water, trying not to concentrate on the slimy bottom or the scrub her hair was going to need. It was difficult to try to both avoid breathing through the noise and avoid letting any water into the mouth.

She emerged on the other side dripping water, with her curly hair pinned flat against her head. With a disgruntled tug, she ensured Aaron followed her all the way out onto the bank before she let go. With a frustrated sigh, she twisted up her hair in her hands to wring the water out of it.

The sun had risen a fair bit while they fought, and the day was starting to gain some heat. Margot could only hope that her clothes dried in time, and that they were sheltered by noon. Today showed signs of being miserably hot.

"Stark Towers," she confirmed with Frost, nodding her head once sharply. "Now let's get moving. Time is of the essence." With that, she marched off into the thick of buildings. Something beeped meekly, and her eyes were filled with a blinding white light.

Margot stumbled back, but the ground slipped from beneath her feet. It was so loud--her hands were clasped over her ringing ears. She struck with her elbows and felt her skin give way against the gritty soil. A cry escaped her, but she couldn't hear it. She couldn't hear anything but a sharp ring.

For a moment, all she could do was lie there and feel her chest move up and down--just assure herself that she was still alive. Then, she gained the courage to open her eyes, and sit up. A sharp pain shot through her head. That had been the second thing to hit the ground.

She blinked away the spots and examined a the ruins of a building just a little ways in front of her. Judging by the scorched ground, she guessed that it had been some kind of bomb. The wall had been stripped away of brick in places, and several windows were shattered. She sat up a bit more, rubbing the back of her head, and turned to face the others. She'd been the closest to the blast (always wanting to walk at the front, she cursed herself) and had received the worst of it. While the others could have been struck by some shrapnel, they would have otherwise been spared everything but the noise and the brightness of the blast.

On shaking legs she stood as straight as she could muster. "Time is of the essence," she repeated gravely, and waited for the others to reassemble themselves.

Apparently, an ACTIVE Chitauri grenade. Ray, realizing in horror too late, ran for Margot's side, being the nearest and first person he saw, but for all his speed, he was too slow. The sudden bombardment of sound and light hit him like a train and Ray stumbled; he saw Margot fall and tried to grab her hand, but missed, and was forced to close his eyes and clamp his hands over his ears in a futile attempt to block out the pain.
Eventually, it faded away, and Ray let his arms fall back down to his sides again, exhausted. He found that at one point he'd collapsed onto his knees, and tiredly pulled himself back up. He breathed more easily once he opened his eyes and saw Margot, also getting to her feet. He frowned, though, as he noticed how shaky he was, and his eyes trailed down to her bleeding leg. "You're hurt," Ray realized, concern filling his eyes.

"F**k!" Fang yelled when the explosion sounded. A few stray shards of glass had cut his arms, and there was a shallow cut on his right cheek. He grunted and began walking towards Ray and Margot. "And bleeding." Fang added to Ray's comment.

Ray decided not to take this opportunity, tempting as it was, to irritably educate Vampsy-Wampsy that in this situation, the terms were entirely interchangeable; for once, not rising to the bait. However, his face showed blatant distaste as he watched the guy approach. To be totally honest, he wouldn't mind- no, he'd love it- if the group was a little smaller. Or a lot smaller. That would work too.
He also resisted tutting at Vamp's language. Seriously? There were little kids- uh, somewhere. He didn't bother looking.
Ray turned back to Margot, a little worried. Was she okay? None of them would be if they didn't keep moving. Could she walk? Kids he'd known had lost legs in the factories in a similar manner. But he didn't fancy she'd like the the idea of being carried...

After briefly looking over Pyra's bullet wound, Aizel had decided to not spare any more time in lazing around and proceeded in tugging the girl up and towards the exit. The buildings was fairly old, mostly in ruins, with chunks of ceiling and bricks scattered around. After managing to somehow get past all the ruins, she had reached one window closest to the exit. Giving Pyra's hand another tug, she began trotting ahead, somewhat worried that the rest of the group (and mainly Aaron) would leave her. She was decidedly the worst person ever to deal with wounds, someone else's wounds much less. Rudeness and lack of manners were a given for Aizel. All the pulling and tugging had probably caused pain to Pyre, but that thought did not ocur to Aizel

Her mind was trained onto Aaron, the healer of their group, who she planned on leaving Pyra to. Aizel herself lacked any medical knowledge and had no desire on babysitting anyone for that matter. The easy solution was to hurry and get the tanned healer to heal Pyra. The girl had reassured her that the bleeding had stopped, but nevertheless, she needed help urgently. There was a possibility that the Chitauri bullet was stuck in the wound, preventing it from bleeding, but actually making it worse.

She hurried ahead, motioning for Pyra to follow and making way to the exit. Apart from her own grunting and growling and both their feet padding on thedusty ground, another sound occupied her attention.

There were three short beeping sounds and a prolonged one which she heard vividly...

Her eyes widened and a gasp escaped her lips as she recognised the sound.
Grenade.
"Back!" she screeched, turning around to face Pyra and pushing her backwards to a wall near the window and door and pressing herself against it as well. A mere moment later, an ear spliting explosion ripped through the air. The ground shook, causing her to almost lose her balance. All windows of the building shattered suddenly, glass flying all directions and covering them both. Aizel had her back pressed against the wall and felt it tremble behind her. She had, however, unfortunatelly forgotten to shield her ears from the explosion. The sound of crumbling bricks filled the air, but her hearing did not catch it.

Every noise disappeared, silence engulfing the building. Aizel pulled back from the wall. Shaking all the glass off of herself, she discovered a pleasant surprise. For once, she did not even have a scratch on herself. She was not sure about Pyra, though. Turning to the girl, she inspected her with what seemed like worry.
"You alright?"

She was sure that those words had left her lips and was surprised that her hearing detected said words only as a faint sound. The explosion had apparently caused her hearing to dull. She let out a grunt, shaking her head furiously in order to regain her proper sense. That tactic didn't seem to work.
"Nevermind. Nobody's alright."

Secretly gritting his teethin fury behind a well disguised smirk, Subutai's senses flared with anger. The two pathetic teens had dared mock him and laugh at him. His hand gripped the scepter tucked under his robe. He clearly imagined them morhped into disgusting snakes, but decided to refrain from complying to that wish. Instead, he calmed his temper and regain all lost composre and giving the two a curt glance before departing as well.

He did not go too far, however, as his curiosity pushed ahead his irrational thinking. He rounded one bulding and headed towards the source of explosion. It had been loud, and probably destructive. He desired to see what had caused such a thing and curtly approached the scene.

It was not far from where they had all stood, so it was naturally loud. The tips of his lips were tugged upwards in a makeshift smile, as his gaze fell on the destroyed buildings and charred surface of the pavement. Bricks and walls lay on the dusty ground, glass had scattered everywhere. And in the middle of it all, a dozen teens stood, seemingly recovering from the blast. He raised an eyebrow, arrogantly and paused near one building, waching intently. They seemed no younger than him...

Margot stared at Ray in confusion for a moment. His words sounded far away and muted, like her ears were plugged. She was able to piece together the short statement she'd heard along with the movement of his mouth and the concerned look on his face--"You're hurt."

"Oh?" she replied, dazed. Her eyebrows knitted together as she followed his eyes down to her own leg. "Oh." She couldn't feel a thing, but judging by the large volume of blood seeping from a gash on her thigh, she was most definitely hurt. Tentatively, she pulled the wound apart to make sure there wasn't any glass or dirt stuck in it. There was none that she could see, but the wound was deep enough to expose the flesh below. Had she been back at the factory, she would have requested stitches, but there was no time for that. Instinctively she examined her jacket for a strip of cloth she could use to bind it when she suddenly realized the predicament she was in. Her clothes were completely soaked with putrid river water. Binding the wound with filthy cloth would all but guarantee infection. Their best bet was to break into a building and wash up.

"I'll be fine," she assured Ray in a stony voice before glancing over the group one more time. "The explosion lost us time, if anything. We need to go NOW." Not without fear, she set off down the street again. They'd only cover as much ground as absolutely necessary.

Somewhat reassured, Ray followed Margot closely. He was a little confused by her unsatasfied scrutiny of her own drippy jacket. When he finally figured it out, Ray stopped. "Oh!" he said, unconsciously mirroring Margot.
He slipped off his clean, untainted jacket; thankful he'd decided not to swim through that gungy river, and offered it to her. "Um. Would this help?" he asked.

Frost ducked and covered her ears, but how was ducking going to help?-she thought bitterly as there was an explosion. When it was over, she moved, and winced. " There were a couple of shards in her legs, but not anything major. She looked around; Margot, being in the front, as usual, seemed to have gotten the worst. "Oh c**p," she muttered out loud. Gingerly, she pulled the shards out and stood up, trying not to wince as she walked toward the others.

Margot stared at Ray for a short moment, making brutal eye contact. It was in her interest to take it, but she would feel a bit guilty about damaging his jacket. "Yeah," she replied, accepting it. Rather than tearing at it like she would have her own clothes, however, she rolled up the garment and tied the single bulky strip of cloth around her leg. The pressure would hopefully stop the bleeding. "Thanks," she added hastily, her eyes meeting his for a second more.

"Let's keep moving," she announced to the group, confident that she'd allowed them enough time. Not without apprehension, she started walking again into the foreign neighborhood. Her chin was tilted up in an effort to exude confidence. As her mother had always said, lightning doesn't strike twice in the same place--that is, their chance of running into another Chitauri grenade was highly unlikely. Still, her nerves were raw. What she wanted was a warm meal and a good night's rest, but somehow, she didn't see it in her future.

While Ray stayed even during her first scary glare, the second time she looked at him, he looked away quickly, embarrassed by the slight pink blush he could feel creeping up his cheeks. For some reason or another, he had had the strange expection that he was going to get punched in the face, so he was immensely relieved when she merely thanked him quickly and moved on. It occurred to him that while he wanted to help these people, he didn't want to be helpFUL. He didn't want people looking at him, expecting things from him. What if Ray couldn't fulfill? No, he'd rather stay in the shadows, out of sight... Out of mind. He shook his head as if to clear it.
Still, he dropped to the back of the group, near Frost; and as far away from Margot as possible, he couldn't help noting. She didn't need him, he assured himself. It wasn't very reassuring, but he ignored whatever his crazy emotions were doing and kept a cool head. He didn't like how long this was taking; Ray had really hoped Stark Tower was a little closer, or the group was a little less slow. Every second that ticked by was BEGGING for more trouble to come knocking. Now, if Ray were by himself, he bet he could have had time for triple this distance plus coffee breaks! He sighed wistfully.

Pyra was annoyed a bit by the way she was tugging her along, but dealt with it, even if it did hurt her back. Her eyes widened at the sound, she'd never heard it. She was still stunned and brain-jammed when she was shoved against the wall. She got over it as she hit the stone, and hit the ground, covering her head, like when people hid from a tornado.
The explosion rocked the ground, but the wall took most of the force. Her head hurt a bit, and there was a buzzing in the background, but she seemed fine.
"You alright?" She gave a quick nod.
"Nevermind. Nobody's alright." Hrmn? Oh, the explosion probably messed with her hearing. The others probably... Oh no, the others! They weren't even in a building when it exploded! She leapt up and swung her head out of the window. Most of them seemed alright, except for one. Big ugly gash. Ouch. She seemed to be ready to go.
"Wait, where are we going?"

Frost kept a steady pace, even though it was slightly painful to walk. Most of the people seemed to be here...she thought to herself quietly. Although, she thought with a hint of glee, she kinda enjoyed seeing Ray slightly embarrassed. Then she focused back on heading to Stark Towers. They were going at an unbelievably slow pace, even for standards of a group. She wondered if she should scout ahead, or stay with a group. Frost tried pacing herself faster while absently changing her clip from daggers, to a sword, to a bow, and back to a clip again, but each time she did, those cuts and gashes stung badly. With a resigned sigh, she slowed down a bit and went with the group.

Aykay kept hearing the words "Stark Tower". Was that the giant building at the end of the tunnel? The machine-hive?

-Where they captured you.- said the voice.

She climbed up the nearest tree and sat there, not wanting to move anymore. She should abandon this group before they got her captured again.

-Stop being selfish.- said the voice. -Show them the tunnel.-

Aaron was chemically waterlogged, and the last & slowest of the group because of this. And because of this, he was the furthest away from the blast. And by this, he was the least harmed. "Holy cheddar, what was that?"

Andrew ignored the curt glance shot by the stranger when Sylvia whispered to him. He shrugged in reply to her question, and turned to the source of it. "Ah, it's fine. Random grenades go off untimely, long after they've been pulled." Turning back around, he ascended into a flying ship. "Come on, we need to work on sourcing the brutes who killed the chitauri." Standing halfway up the ramp, his motioned his hand as to invite Sylvia up and in. The chitauri that where by their side already were on the ship.

Right when she started to ignore Andrew, he walked in and closed the door behind him. When she appeared again, he was coolly seating himself for a refreshment. "Alright guys, get to work and let's get away from this place before we all blow up." The chitauri disarmed their weapons, (but not completely) before spreading out to engage the ship for liftoff.
"What would you like to drink, Princess?" came Andrew's voice again through the chitauri chatter of everyday flight.

The machine master... She had to be behind all this... Aykay closed her eyes. She could remember every last detail of her torture at the hands of the machine master, and she supposed that's how she had wanted it.

That's when the voice had appeared, wasn't it? During the torture?

Maybe. That was irrelevant.

Margot did a quick head count as she glanced back at them. There was Ray, who had sneaked all the way to the back of the crowd--odd, as he was usually bouncing ahead of them all. There was Aizel, dragging hot-hand girl, and Frost toying with her weapons. Frost looked a little cut up as well, but otherwise fine. There was Aaron, still dripping water and waddling along. Fang was around, and the newest girl as well. Margot almost wished this girl had run off during the battle. Something about her seemed untrustworthy. The group was one short, she realized, and knitted her eyebrows. It took her a moment to remember who it was they were missing.

"Stripes," she called out. "If you can hear us, we're moving out." She considered fair warning given. With that, she faced forward toward the buildings. It would be nice to find one with high security around the bottom; she could always smash a top floor window and get them in. From a high place, a view of Stark Tower would also be possible. She doubted that they'd find the building so easily, and at the same time, she was grateful for the extra time. Loki was aware that Stark Towers was the Avengers' base of operations. She doubted that he would leave that place unsupervised.
