DECEMBER 2013 CLUB NEWSLETTER - CONT'DBird Facts & TipsMeet The Birds-Of-Paradise!The birds-of-paradise are of the Paradisaeidae family. They can found mostly in New Guinea. A few are in the Maluku Islands and eastern Australia. They are mostly confined to dense rainforest. Mostly all species eat fruit (the rest on insects, arachnids & crustaceans) and range in monogamy to lek-type polygamy.Hunting and habitat depletion are threatening some species. Many generally look crow-like in a general body format. Most species, male tails are larger and longer than the female by little or huge difference. Though, most are in tropical rainforests it is not uncommon for them to live in swamps and moss forest. Nearly all species are solitary tree dwellers. How much do you know about Swans?Swans are birds of the family Anatidae within the genus Cygnus. The swans' close relatives include the geese and ducks. There are six or seven species of swan in the genus Cygnus.Swans mate for life, unless a nesting failure or a mate is killed by a predator. Laying of eggs in each clutch can be from three to eight. Swans are the largest members of the waterfowl family and are among the largest flying birds.Adults have a patch of unfeathered skin between the eyes and bill. In the Northern Hemisphere there are species of swan that have pure white plumage, but the Southern Hemisphere ones are mixed with black and white. The Australian Black Swan is entirely black except for the white flight feathers on its wings. Although, most birds don't have teeth, swans are an exception to this, having small jagged teeth as part of their beaks for catching and eating fish.Swans feed in both water and land. They are mostly herbivores, though may eat small amounts of aquatic animals. The lifespan of the Mute Swan is often over 10 years and clutch size is 4 to 7 eggs with an incubation period of 34 to 45 days.

@byfelisaHiya I just completed the 1st part of Cracking Santas Safe & PMed you the answers πI'm not a fan of Winter although I do like to watch the snow falling. The fact that no two are exactly alike it's an overpowering thought since there are billions upon billions of them. When i was a child we lived in the country and after it snowed the fields would be covered in thick pristine snow for as far as I could see...marred only by a few tiny bird footprintsπ

JANUARY 2014 CLUB NEWSLETTER - CONT'D...FULL News - http://byfelisa.net/BA/BOAFNEWS9.html- Bird Facts & Tips -Meet The Cockatoo! The Cockatoo bird is affectionate, playful and very enterprising in nature. They are recognized by the showy crests and curved bills. Their plumage is less colourful than that of other parrots, mainly white, grey or black and often with coloured features in the crest, cheeks or tail. Averagely they are larger than other parrots but the Cockatiel, is the smallest and labeled a small bird. Cockatoos are popular birds but their needs are difficult to cater for.The Cockatiel is easiest to care for and most frequently kept in captivity. White cockatoos more so captive than black ones. Cockatoos love to eat seeds, tubers, fruit, flowers and insects. They often feed in large flocks, especially when ground feeding. They are monogamous and nest in tree hollows. Forest-dwelling cockatoos are mostly sedentary, for the food supply is more stable. Cockatoos require daylight to find their food. They wait until the sun has warmed their roosting sites before feeding. All species are highly social and roost, forage and travel in colourful, noisy flocks. They may display site fidelity, returning to the same nesting sites in consecutive years. Clutch size differs within the family. The Palm Cockatoo and other larger cockatoos lay only a single egg while the smaller species lay between two to eight eggs.Food supply determines a clutch size also. Incubation is dependent on species size, the Cockatiels have a period of 20 days and the larger Cockatoos incubate eggs up to 29 days.It is said that several species of cockatoo are serious agricultural pests. Some a nuisance in urban areas because of destruction of property. They maintain their bills in the wild by chewing on wood but, in suburbia, they chew outdoor furniture, door and window frames; soft decorative timbers are visibly demolished. They may target external wiring and fixtures such as solar water heaters, television antennae and satellite dishes. The Long-billed Black Cockatoo is known in the south-west of Western Australia to be a pest in apple and pear orchards where it destroys the fruit to extract the seeds. 7 species of cockatoo are now vulnerable or worse; one is considered to be near threatened. Of these, two species being the Red-vented Cockatoo and the Yellow-crested Cockatoo, considered to be critically endangered. The main threats to cockatoos are habitat depletion and wildlife trade. Cockatoos are popular as pets but the capture and trade has threatened them; between 1983 and 1990._______________________________________Here are two polls, we look forward to your responses. =)Do you like the new Khione out this month?YES or NOWhat is your favorite winter activity? @byfelisaI love all birds but one of my favorites are the Barn Swallows. In early summer I see them zooming around the indoor riding ring. But they also leave earlier than other birds. Luckily they don't poop on the horses π
