"Let's pool these afterward to get a better look at them, then we can split them up." Irvin says as his gem pops out. There was a little bit of stone still stuck to the other side, but he didn't really care.

"Okay," Neraiya gave her gem and extra shove and it came out. "Should we go, or do you want to stay a little longer?"

"Let's go." As if to punctuate his words, the volcano rumbled a little.

Neraiya nodded and turned around. She started to head for the exit.

Irvin followed. The volcano rumbled again, and Irvin swam faster.

“Is that a bad sign?” Neraiya asked, starting to speed up.

"Probably." Irvin says. "The volcano's rumbling. Does it sound like a good sign? I'm pretty sure it means it's close to erupting."

"Shoot... let's get out of here, then," Neraiya looked around. The whole place was shaking.

They were pretty far in the tunnel and the volcano was erupting. They could get blocked in the cave. Irvin swam at top speed toward the exit.

Neraiya swam even faster, keeping up with Irvin.

Irvin got out of the tunnel just as lava started spilling out of the top of the volcano.

"I should probably head back now," Neraiya said. "Thanks, though. Think we'll meet again?"

"I'd definitely like to meet up with you again." Irvin says. "You're welcome." He swam a little farther until he was out of range of the volcano.

Neraiya waved to him, and the swan back to school.

Irvin waved back, a little sad to see her go. Being an outcast, he rarely saw any other merfolk.

Neraiya swam home after school. She finally was able to explore! Her parents would probably be mad at her, though.

Irvin got into his little cave and sat back in his bed to look through the gems he'd collected.

“My parents are probably still working,” Neraiya muttered to herself as she looked around her house. She swam to her room and put the gems in a drawer.

After Irvin had finished, he put the gems in a stone box that had sunken down near his front porch.
