Crystal trudged along the gravel driveway the rocks crunching underneath her feet. She hid her hair with a hoodie and kept her head down. The neighborhood kids made fun of her and the adults whispered behind her back about how strange she was.They would throw rocks eggs and lunches at her. Even the little second graders made fun of her. She sat down on the porches wooden swing and sighed. Today was her eleventh birthday. She wished Josh was home. Sometimes he came home from the fancy boarding school. She looked up in amazment as an owl fluttered down by the mail box and dropped something. It was addresed to her! She ran inside yelling Mum! Dad! I got a letter from that Hogwarts place Josh goes to! Her mum and dad apperead in the doorway as she read it out loud.


"HOGWARTS SCHOOL OF WITCHCRAFT AND WIZARDRY

Headmaster: Minerva McGonagall

Dear Crystal Goldhammer,
We are pleased to inform you that you have a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Please find enclosed a list of all necessary books and equipment.
Term begins on 1 September. We switch your owl by no later than 31 July.

The matron, a slightly rounded bossy kind of woman bustled down the hallway and knocked on Kitty's door. "Kitty dear!" She called.
Kitty glowered and opened the door. "This is a Mr.... Weatherby come to see you dear. About-"
"Maybe it's best if I tell her," he said quietly.
"All right," the matron left.
Kitty watched him wearily like he might suddenly rear up and strike like a snake.
He stood there awkwardly for a few moments before he realized she wasn't going to invite him into her room.
"Kitty, i've come to offer you a place at my school."
Kitty looked up. Her marks, after all, weren't bad. Maybe it was an advanced school. Maybe it was a boarding school!
She didn't let anything show. "What kind of school?"
"A magical one."
Kitty giggled. "You sound stupid."
"I'm serious."
Kitty's face hardened. This was some dumb prank. Well, she'd call his bluff. "Prove it," she demanded arrogantly.

Sarah's parents came up, and looked at the letter, frowning.
"Sarah.... we need to talk." they sighed to her.
"Remember when you where 6, and you wanted ice cream from the ice cream truck, but when it didn't stop, you threw a fit, then all of a sudden the tires blew out?" he father asked.
Sarah tried to remember that, but it was so long ago, her memory was fuzzy.
"A few days ago, a man came to the house and explained some things..... We didn't believe him, but after the cake, and the letter...." he Mum trailed off.
"So i'm MAGICAL, or something?!? That's crazy!" Sarah defended herself.
"It's a lot to take in, but...... It's hard for all of us to believe. This man was going to come back tonight, to explain some things to you.." her Mum was close to tears.

The man made a sudden gesture and Kitty's waldrobe burst into flames. She let out a startled cry and jumped back, and the flames disappeared.
Kitty stared hungrily at it. Was this what she could do, magic?
"You're a witch, Kitty."
She swung round and looked at him, now paying much better attention. "What school?" She asked slowly, and he handed her a letter, which she skimmed then discarded carelessly.
"Where do i get this stuff?" She glanced at the list of books and equipment.
"I'll take you shopping tomorrow."
"I don't have any money," Kitty replied gloomily.
"Hogwarts supplies some for those who need it. But I wouldn't be so sure." Then the man disapparated.

Cael sat cross-legged in front of the window, scanning the skies. ARG! The only thing up there was a cloud. Wait. That wasn't a cloud.... it was slowly getting bigger. Or coming closer. Cael squinted at the "cloud". What the-- IT HAD FEATHERS. He did a double take. His letter! It was coming! He rushed out the screen door with a bang and waved eagerly at the approaching owl. It landed slowly on Cael's extended arm and dropped the letter. "Thanks!" Cael said to the owl before it flew away. Zooming back inside, he waved the letter excitedly in his hands. "MOM!" He called, "I got my letter!"

He ripped it open:
Dear Mr. King,

We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Please find enclosed a list of all necessary books and equipment.
Term begins on September 1. We await your owl by no later than July 31.

Crystal her mum said. Sit down we meet to talk. The thing is- Your a witch Crystal! Josh said as he burst through the door. Josh! She cried out and ran to hug him. Hey kiddo! He smiled. Whoa! Mum let you get streaks? He asked amazed. Yep! She replied proudly.
Josh! What a pleasant surprise! Dad said as he hugged his son. Hi dad, Hi mum! He ran over to mum and hugged her. So why are you here? Dad asked. Crystal go pack your bags cause your goin to Hogwarts! He replied with a grin.

Crystal's eyes where wide. She couldn't take enough of Diagon Alley in!
"So only one more thing left?" She asked Josh. "Yep!" He said But why don't you go into the wand shop? I have to go get something."
Crystal stepped nervously into the shop. "Hello?" She called out. An old man came into sight.
"Yes?" He wheezed.
I'm here for a wand! She said.
"Oh, yes here try this one!" He coughed
She took the wand and flicked it. A vase broke.
" Try this one." He sputtered.
She waved this one and sparks flew out of it.
"that'll be 18 gallions." The old man said holding his hand out. Crystal payed him stepped outside and gasped when she saw that Josh was holding a small brown owl in his hands.

The next day Kitty dreaded, for what if he never showed up? What if it had all been a dream? But no, the curious looks the matron was giving her confirmed it, it had been real.
They didn't speak during the car ride. Kitty had only been in a car four or five times. She wondered why a wizard bothered learning how to drive. Didn't they all use flying carpets or brooms? They parked outside a dingy old pub.
"The Leaky Cauldron," Weatherby announced.
At first Kitty looked at it, disappointed. Then she realized excitedly that the people walking on the streets didn't look at it, didn't-couldn't- see it.
The place was crowded with shabbily dressed people, and as they pushed past to the back of the pub, Kitty stopped worrying about fitting in or her own clothes.
They went into the courtyard and Weatherby tapped a brick three times with his wand. Three up, two across from the dustbin, Kitty counted.
